3k in a 15 inch? Extreme Edition CPU? 3x mSATA in RAID? 32GB RAM? Sure! Oh wait. MSI and personally, I freaking hate their designs. Alienware better pull it out of their backsides because the competition is stiff especially from Razer over the 14 inch models.

I'm sure Dell realizes that it cannot charge 25% more than its competitors (most notably MSI) and offer nothing. Even Apple would not get away with that.

If I am wrong, this m17x might be my last "gaming laptop," because I don't like MSI's designs either.

Seeing what razer has managed to do with the new 17 and 14 blades and what MSI and Gigabyte are doing with their thin gaming laptops. This is just really really pathetic.

A clean design was what set alienware apart from the clevo and msi, asus. but looks like those 3 companies are learning their lessons and alienware is going backwards..........The design team should be fired

    I'm a m17x r3 owner.

PS i dont get it. Most of the forum chatter and reviews are in favour of clean sleek matte designs but alienware goes out and designs something that looks bad from every angle.......................WHAT THE HELL. Reminds me of a dell latitude from the 90.

    905739_154577308044185_1920994074_o.png

PSS I'm overacting a bit because i had hoped for a slimming down of the line. But i can see that AW is going in a different design direction to razer. for what they are goign for it seem like atleast the thing is relatively well put together. I hope the specs will save it. But i have the feeling the 14x will only have a 765GTX and 47w CPU given it's a single heatsink design.

Im glad you acknowledged your overreaction to the new design, and i don't understand the obsession with thin design to me thin feels insubstantial in hand, fragile, and cheaper just my 2 cents..this design has cleaner lines and is slightly toned down yet edgy....kind of like an expensive piece of clothing..a suit of the rack is nice no doubt...and all suits usually are comprised of the same basic elements....but a tailor made designer suit is understated but its craftsmanship and fit separate it ..idk if my analogy was clear but i tried

Who wants a thin gaming laptop? I want a chunky one with epic cooling. Who needs a battery? Rather a custom 120mm rad :)

Let's agree to disagree. I understand that change can be difficult to accept, but calling the new design pathetic is really overlooking what AW is trying to do; that is, a (most welcome) change of gears in terms of looks and feel (more futuristic and less chunky-like), while it keeps its presence and alien-like identy. So many keep comparing this design to Clevo of Sager, and honestly I don't really see how those two brands can even be compared with the new AWs. I guess that some people want to think they're similar because now they don't come in red or space-black? Maybe that's yet another reason people want to find in order to complain about AW? It escapes my understanding.

Change is not a step backward, it's simply undertaking a new journey. I actually like the new design from every angle, so it's about taste, it's about what we decide that looks cool or not. Besides, what has made AW so famous is not just sleek back-lighted customizable colors, but top performance in the world of mobile gaming. No other competitors, as well as some desktops, are able to match an M18x r*'s performance in game, its quality built, its incredible overclocking potentials, and its awesome warranty. This is what really makes AW so special if compared with other products. Design is a shell. Aside from the fact that I really like the new look, I'm honestly more interested in what's under the hood and the what speeds that engine can reach, so I don't really get why all this fuss about the new "face-lifting." And yes, I believe you're overreacting a bit.

and yes its all about taste :)

i am a designer, i like my designs! but no one else does :p

Its only a matter of 4 days, then wether you like it or not, noobs will be shouting about the new cool alienware, and whoever has it, well ....

The more I think about it, its growing on me, its not as futuristic i wanted but overall i reckon, we will all be satisfied.

Also bottom line, every laptop out there has few issues and design issues, we have to compromise, great cooling or silent and slim design, can't have both, look at M15x, thick and heavy and loud but 4yr old design running 7970, no other 4yr laptop from competition can come close.

Don't even start me on the actual warranty from dell/aw, i would go aw again and again just due to the warranty alone :)

I can not be more agree with you.

just one thermal fan in this bulky m14x R3... mmmm

another nightmare with the heat and throttling issues of the m14x R1/R2?
    No.... thanks

the hope of a thinner design (and dual fan) for the m14x, just died.

I believe it is the speaker grill....

Look at this screen shot of the power button, which i am assuming is above the keyboard.

Bah, it's been a few days now and I still think it's hideously ugly - ideally I would've preferred the previous look with improved internal cooling.

I consider Razer a serious threat to Alienware as they're releasing intriguing products designed for gaming enthusiasts who are looking for something different - AW's own demographic.

The thing about design is it will tend to split people both ways. I am looking forward to what the internals are capable of.

I have got to say the new design has got me a bit scared, I don't mind the thickness, just the overall design/shape and the color scheme, don't get me wrong the metallic exterior looks ok, the interior though looks cheap and plasticky, the keyboard doesn't look that good (but that may well be from the lack of good pictures of it) the track pad looks really really bad though, cheap and gimmicky, who needs their trackpads to light up that much, or to light up at all for that matter, I am ready to bet that most of us will just turn it off anyways because it will just bother us .
I am really looking forward to seeing good quality pictures so I can judge it fairly, maybe different color schemes like full metallic or all black etc, I hope they will not end up looking ugly and cheap .

M14x r3 should be dual fan cooling or a much bigger single fan and heatsink and it better be quieter than r1/r2 because those sounded like jet engine/hairdryer sound at 50decibels.

I will just say it again. The new design
Is awesome. I have m18x r2 and i like it BUT its very flashy, with the flashy grills, logo button and white squares keyboard, i must say its a bit too much. I love that its a beast and i can play whatever i want ,but i always wanted a sleek, modern, private and proffesional design. ( think of Iphone 5). And i must say that i LOVE IT. yes, its not so flashy and it doensnt demand that much attention, but i assume most of us arent kids as well :) I love the new clean design and i an sticking with it. I am selling my r2 as soon as possible. I must have that in my hands !!

Dont be so harsh on the design. I bet when you see it live you would love it ( most of you ).

Is the base GPU meant to be 750m in the m17x? Does anyone have any idea on this?
I thought i read that the 7970m was better than this card would suck to have to upgrade when the current gen on Radeons is so good, would be nice to have an option/When is the new Radeons coming out?

Given their current base offerings... my best guess would be the GTX 765m or GTX 770m. The 750m is not a GTX card, and they have always started with a GTX card in their 17' models

I think that since 780m has a max of 120 W the notebooks have been made thicker, but its possible it requires 120W because of GPU boost 2.0 which means if we over clock it, we would require more then 120 W?

I keep thinking about the new m14x and if dell did what MSI has in their systems (and ditched the dvd-rom), put a bigger fan and lots more copper pipes / cooling system around there, we may be lucky to have that mxm slot in there. But again a part of me thinks about that 'marketing' and that the m17x will fail on sale (though it has a bigger screen) and that it will not be possible and everything will remain almost the same built inside: dvd-rom, gpu on board etc. etc., yet 4 days to go on our curiosity... But now is the time for ALIENWARE to proof "The most powerful 14" laptop in the Universe!"

Not the m18x, but I do carry my m17x to class on a regular basis. (And then I use it for reddit/IRC/ssh, kinda overkill for that)

So while 11lb might be a lot, it is definitely manageable.

If it is true then the power cord is still on the back side but just in the corner. If ppl look at the underbelly of the M14 leaked picture you can see a hole that looks like a AC cord socket . The teaser videos however showed it on the side of the notebook. The leaked image might be a prototype and the notebook that we will get will just have some minor modification/ tweaks.

Indeed, and what does a 3k screen on a laptop do but increase its workload? You can zoom in, but developers optimize their applications for the usual magnification. Look at the resolution issues on the Macbook Pro Retina, a laptop with Apple's unique OS and software. For gaming, such a resolution would lower framerates and make the effect of anti-aliasing more obvious, and lowering the resolution looks terrible in games. A decent (and cheaper) external monitor or set of external monitors with a similar resolution would crush the laptop's screen in almost all technical parameters. I commend MSI for innovating, but I don't consider that laptop to be the smashing hit some people think it is.
