Razer is probably out of my list with the lack of Ethernet port, Card Reader, Optical Drive and a subpar tn display @ $1,800.
M13x or M14x R3 is on top of my list, followed by MSI GE40 then the Ideapad Y410 then Clevo 13"

Ill be taking this to school mostly, Even though the razer doesnt have a very good display it is a 17" and it weights the same as the other ones... I currently have a Sony z13 which weights about 2 lbs, im not sure i want to go to something that weights 10lb to take it to school daily...
But Then there is that MSI GT70 Dragon Edition 2 Extreme looks badddd and its hardware its nice!, im sure the AW 17 will be similar spec wise... Just not sure what to do
On the plus side, if i get one of those monster 17" i can sell my desktop since i no longer will need a separate gaming computer -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
I bring my r3 to class all the time for a number of different things and once you get used to the weight its not a huge deal to lug around. Hopefully the next gen stuff though is a little lighter that would be cool with me.
-
They look so nice! Wish I could afford one haha!
-
Whats you guys opinion on the MSI GT70 Dragon Edition 2 Extreme

This might be a much better thread to ask in: http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/718530-official-msi-gt70-2od-owners-lounge-35.html.

if i ask over there ill just get good things about it =) if i ask here u will tell me the bad things about that system

I imagine it's quite a good machine - if you like that kind of thing. Spec looks reasonable and price is probably reasonable, too. However, you will probably find though that folk who like/own AW don't particularly rate MSI or other manufacturers. Wether or not that is good/bad is irrelevant because it's each individuals own choice at the end of the day. Personally, I'd never buy a laptop with huge "gaming style" graphics emblazoned all over it, but that's just me. Even if AW came out with the 'holy grail' of specifications, if it looked like that, I would not be interested - remotely. -
The problem is that most people on this forum haven't used an MSI.
The flagship MSI laptops and their barebones seem to have lots of nice features and the best "bang-for-the-buck" on the market, but their designs are blingy and noisy. I prefer tasteful flash and a clean design to bling and noise. That and I don't like MSI's gimmicky advertising. -
I would just get the standard version instead and add my own ssd unless you need the extra ram for whatever purposes or you are keen on the design.

If you have time to wait I would see what alienware has to offer first and then make a decision.
-
I think people are just not seeing some of the stuff AW is offering but really ports at the back of the laptop? most of MSI and Clevo/sagers got those one which imo is just a bad idea in general. I'd hate to have to reach esata/usb3.0 near the back everytime to have to use it.
also with MSI is probably something I'll never get unless I have extra money to blow, single heatsink, single fan shared with GPU and CPU.. never gonna see an extreme OC in that. -
The msi heatsink/fan was report to work pretty well. The fan is larger and heatsink pipe is bigger iirc.
This refresh is pretty interesting if alienware really managed to get IPS screen on all three models, consider clevos are stuck with old AUOs and IPS only on the 3k msi. Asus come back make thing more interesting (or confusing). -
really well doesnt fit the title of a best gaming laptop. I wanna be able to overclock as high as freaking possible on both CPU and GPU, don't think MSI can do that.
-
If MSI had dual fan (separated from each other CPU/GPU) I would have bought it in a flash... You will never find m17x with 780M at 2k price, that is 100% guaranteed.
If you go with m17x with atleast a matte 1080P (if they will have it) screen + 780M it will be easily atleast $2,399.00 (they love that '99 figure) which is not that bad. Another 2 1/2 days to go... -
surely you can get one of those from ebay for that spec less than 2k, but need to wait for sure. imo I recall MSI and ASUS gaming laptops werent that expensive around 2 years ago but now MSI cranked that way up. with 680M at around 2200-2500 is just ridiculous considering cooling isnt the best, and plastic chassis. where as Asus were able to stay 1500 and 1100 if lucky enough to find some on sale.
however I do admit MSI got really nice audio my friend showed me his and I compared it with my R2 and its a bit better, but still quite abit away from HP and Dell 20 inch laptop though

MSI and ASUS looks very cheap IMHO. That's why you pay that low. !!IMHO!!
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
I'd seriously be looking at the new asus g750 right now if I didn't have to pay a bunch of extra money for the 32gigs of RAM and some of the the other stuff that comes on the model with the 780m. Quite a shame.
-
I'd wait until the unveiling of m17x r5 to see whether it's true that they ditch AlienFX on the keyboard. If it's true then I'd prefer Asus G750 with custom color backlit by xoticpc service.
-
I'd love to pick up a G750, I really would. Unfortunately Asus' asinine decision to not support Optimus means I can't even consider it.
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
yea that was another thing that put a nail in the coffin, Not really even that hard to implement really. -
Anyone noticed Alienware UK took m17x r4 off it's website? Alienware M17x Full HD 3D Gaming Laptop Details | Dell UK
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Seems available still via this link: Alienware M17x Full HD 3D Gaming Laptop Details | Dell UK
Oops, seems that when you click through to buy, it brings you back to the same result - not available. Good spotting. -
That's pretty interesting; I've been checking the m17x on the UK website every now and then for the past month and components have gradually been disappearing from the builder. The option for a 3D display disappeared about 3-4 weeks ago, possibly as they sell off their remaining stock. Definitely gearing up for the R5
I for one am really excited about this; I think the new design is a lot how I would expect a premium-end laptop to look. It's fresh, interesting and more streamlined imo. I can't wait to see the final product

Nope, try to buy...'Sorry, but this item is no longer available for purchase online. Please contact your sales representative for details on how to order.' Makes sense when there will be a switch over following the weekend... -
Really excited. I very much like the "mature/serious" look of the m17x r5. Still pissed off that I have to get a custom 90 degrees Ethernet cable though.
How come none of you seem to care about this inconvenience? -
-
"noisy"--attracting attention by showiness or bright colors
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
If only they kept to the M17x R2 chassis...

@Prolixious: Ah, thats what you meant.
Alienware looks far more flashy than MSI in my opinion though. Pretty much because of the old keyboard with the the white boarders and the light effects on keyboard and touchpad.
The MSI does look different though with the touchbar above the keyboard. Maybe thats what you refer to as bright colours? -
true man! i just like the charger at the back but some ppl requested the charger to be on the left so now the charger is on the left! damn i wish they hadnt, next time we will make up our own wish list and send it to dell
-
Very impressive indeed. How do they compare with the current gen Asus g75?
-
The keyboards on the new models look like the Dell Latitude/Precision keyboards. Unless Dell decided to cut corners on keyboards it sources for other models, the Alienware keyboards should be good.
@Cloudfire: I was referring to the S-bar, touchpad, glossy display bezel, and keyboard surround.
Dell might have changed it because a lot of people griped about ergonomics (especially the wrist rest). Is the m17x r2 full aluminum? -
Notebookcheck haven`t done any reviews on the G750 with GTX 780M yet.
Yeah, MSI have a pretty good cooling system -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I don't think anyone will be dissapointed with any of them.
-
Dell/AW Australia still selling M17xR4, M18xR2 and M14x. But then again Dell/AW Australia has been almost a full month slow every single time to refresh the line.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Nothing else comes close to that fan though, its a beast.
I think a larger fan for a combined heatsink with plenty of breathing room would be fine. -
from a serviceability point of view that msi design is really good. looks surprisingly neat actually........i have a feeling msi is ran by a bunch of engineers.

The Ethernet port is at the rear of the machine... each machine is about 12" long. And when I use a 14" - 17" laptop I have it so my arms are stretched out parallel, so I am not hunched over using it. Thus my mouse zone never reaches near the rear of the laptop. It is always around the first 5" and -3" area that I think most people will use the mouse around there. Also I have good WiFi @ 1.8MPS so I rarely use Ethernet unless I am simultaneously downloading a bunch of stuff. I think most people on this Forum will be using WiFi the majority of the time. -
I don't like this design, I will never buy a laptop that look like this!!!!
-
1.8MPS ? what is that my friend
-
Pft, glass notebooks is the future. It features the new invisible MSI motherboard
-
can't wait till Monday!
-
actually, if design is like that then its improved. they obviously somewhat adopted asus g74sx dual fan single heatsink, this way if either CPU or GPU runs hot, it goes the other way and shares the heat spreader but when both are hot underload, theres should be almost no difference with old one.
imo I dont think MSI offers a 4.5 to 4.8 ghz overclocking with the CPU thats why GPU is mostly the hotter one so they thought it'll be nice to use CPU heatsink as well.
anyway Im looking forward to any changes in the new AW cooling system, maybe quad heatpipe heatsink and a stronger but quieter fan.
seriously though, aside from new CPU/GPU which isnt much of an improvement, im only really interested in lynx chipset with full SATA III, but then again it came with broken USB 3.0 issues and prob wont get fixed for at least half a year to a year :/ -
The USB 3.0 issues are very minor, really. All that happens is when the computer resumes from sleep, the USB device gets dropped, then detected again. Only an issue if you leave something open during a sleep cycle, and even then, there's no data loss or anything.
-
I don't know how quiet is your room, but the M18XR1 with this three fan is the most quiet laptop I have ever used.

Average download speed with my Xfinity WiFi via Comcast. I use the Netgear N900 dual band router.
On a side note, I will be interested to see if Alienware offers Killer wireless cards with their new lineup. -

Can anybody figure out where this goes? If not then the leaks we have so far may be out of date..
