Well, that is what we are assuming, at this rate we may never know the truth to that unfortunately.

edit: I am referring to 4850 Cf vs GTX 280m SLI btw...since few people posted before I got mine up haha

And that's all fine and dandy. Of course you guys will be able to provide the software solution for it, no? Because I know Halo and Don did modding and somehow, their shuttering went away.

    Coincidence?

Anyway, I won't derail this more.

Halo sold his because it still stuttered...

Like I said before, just yesterday they were still saying that we would be able to upgrade, so who knows what the heck is going on with these.

I've heard far worse things about OcUK than I have ANY OTHER COMPANY. There are very few positive comments about it and yet there are far more positive comments about other companies. It does make me think that if it's that good then why don't more people review it postively?

Their stuttering didn't go away..... Don sold his whitebook over it actually. Do your research dude. I have spent MANY hours late into the night with Don working on it with my system, the end result? My x9100 is in the mail.

OK. I accept my lost battle here. I stopped following that thread when they said that the modding fixed their stuttering and I even more so when I sold my M17.

Thats fine, I've also heard legitimate complaints in similar numbers about all the large retail companies at one point or another; ebuyer especially used to be bad; hell think even trading standards hit them, doesn't mean they're the work of the devil; just they have some staff who need fired :p
My stuff has always come on time, and RMAs have been smooth and hasslefree, they've even offered to take back bits I've opened happily before for various reasons.
I'm not calling them perfect; I know they're not, and I know they've had complaints, but its not like any major company hasn't, and most of the notable names in the industry have had periods of major crisis at one point or another.

    ^^Thats why^^

The M17 just doesn't handle the Quad's right, thats really all it boils down to.

It is less frequent, but not 100% gone. Sadly, I too was hopeful, then there it was rearing its ugly head at me again....

I have a short temper for things that don't work properly, it's better for all parties involved (me, laptop, wallet) to have the x9100 haha

Small subnote; has anyone heard anything back from AW since the initial bad news? They're still on the site; and if this is going on at HQ, you'd think they'd remove them ASAP to prevent any more orders; especially if finance becomes involved!

At this point, I would not expect much intelligent or organized from AW/Dell. Now I am remembering why they have such a HORRIBLE reputation in the desktop world. (although they seem to do better with laptops)

Well this should amuse you all. Just got a call from AW a few minutes ago explaining that the only reason we cant upgrade at the moment is because they dont have enough stock for replacements in new machines, but they had accidentally sent a pair out to me and when I get them could I return them lol. Just wondering what to do. All they can do really if I keep them is charge me.

If you recieve them...keep 'em! F-ooook Alienware, especially if you'd already agreed to buy them!

On the other hand, if they're telling you that, does that mean new buyers CAN still get 4850 crossfire?

If they're that desperate for them as they need a decent stockpile for new buyers, I mean it's not you walked into thier warehouses, handpicked your own 4850 set and then put them in the mail to yourself, someone there ordered, picked, and posted them for you...

Yes all the stock they have is for new buyers at the moment and to cover and repairs on new systems. Hence the option is staying on the website. Think I might keep them as worst they can do is just charge me for them.

Go for it mate, individually those things are almost as fast as the crossfire 3870 at full utilisation :D

Are you in the UK or the US? If I order, I'd like to actually know if they're going to honour any finance agreement I set up, or pull out, completely f-ing me over in the process as it'll likely be on me to cancel the finance properly?

    Discussion Thread
Response (Marcok, Matej) 07/21/2009 10:50 AM
    Dear Mr. Collins,

Thank you for your query. The upgrade to the 4850 is not available yet. There is no information about the release date of the 4850 for M17 laptops, but It should be in the following days. If the cards will be available under the M17 tech specs on the website, then you may give us a call and we can than sell you this upgrade.

    Thank you for choosing ALIENWARE.

I think Alienware realizes how upset some people are going to get when they see a customer was able to get the cards but they can't. lol

There is no way I'd send them back.

Hi guys...some news :D...not all of it good though:

    ************
Response (Salt, Thomas) 07/21/2009 11:01 AM

    Hi,

    Thank you for your enquiry.

The M17 is available with 4850 Xfire cards when purchased new.

We are at this moment only offering the cards with new systems, this is probably why you've heard of cancellations as the demand for upgrading older M17 systems is high.

    Regards,

    Tom
    Alienware

Customer (Alex Rose) 07/21/2009 10:46 AM
    Hi there,

Currently you have the mobility 4850 crossfire available for purchasers of an M17 laptop; however at a couple of places I've heard that is being pulled, and orders are being cancelled.

I am currently very intent on ordering a 4850 crossfire equipped M17, but am not interested in the 3870 models as they just don't suit the length of time Id wish to keep an expensive notebook for, can you tell me whether the 4850 mobility setup is actually still available or not?

    Thanks,

    Alex Rose

    *************

So seems the M17 IS getting the 4850, they're just not supplying them to older M17 owners yet due to demand.

Providing something doesn't go hideously wrong anyway :(

BTW, providing it doesn't, when it comes I'll be running a neutered spec (p8400/2GB/4850Xfire) for a few weeks, want me to run a few benchmarks straight away so you can see what performance is like even on a 'base' spec?
