I tried to order the cards today..they refused. There is currently no option for exsisting Alienware M17 owners in the U.S. to upgrade their video cards, I was also told to keep checking with them as the policy may change but there was no ETA.

Thats what I was told today., after speaking with 3 Reps. I will try again next week and see what happens.

I have a feeling that cooling mods were needed to get the 4850's to work with the m17 and it will only be available on new systems with the more aggressive cooling with maybe an option later down the line of sending in your m17 to get the cooling mods needed for the 4850 upgrade to work. I wish all of you m17 owners the best of luck with getting this worked out as y'all have been jerked around for so long on this. M17x owners will still pwn you tho ;)

Well, if people have already ordered them, then they shouldnt have made different cooling.

how come AW never knows what the customer wants? were prolly just waiting for them to get more cards in stock, and for now they just want to use the ones they have for new customers..

    Hi,
I just called Alienware Germany (I bought my m17 in Austria just one month ago) and they confirmed the upgrade ( 390 Euro for the 4850's without shipping and replacing). :)
I have to send in the m17 (they refused to send the cards to me).
The guy told me that the cooling system is the same (he checked it out) - strictly speaking he told that no modification on the cooling system will be necessary)
Now I'm waiting for a call back from Alienware to tell me the total replacing costs (cards+shipping+replacing).
I think the total costs will be much higher than 390 euros.

Hoppefully he don't call back to tell me that they have changed mind and the upgrade isn't possible.... :(
I will finally belive in the upgrade after holding the new cards in my hands...

P.S. They still have the 4870's listed.
He asked me if I want the 4870's or the 4850's but then confirmed that they aren't selling the 4870's ;-)

    Hi,

Alienware Germany called back and confirmed the price of 390 Euro for the 4850's.

AND because my m17 still has warranty they will not charge me for the shipping costs and the replacing. So the total costs (including sending in) are 390 Euro and I will get my 3870's back :D .

I'm placing the order right now.

Well just got a call from AW tech support telling me that my order for my 4850's has been cancelled even after I had a conformation mail and a tracking number. He said they all got an email from the warehouse saying these cards are not available for the M17 even though they are on the website. He also said all the tech guys have no idea whats going on at the moment. So ultimately no 4850's for us at the present time.

    Hi,
my order was cancelled too. The tech guy told me that they had a technical or logistical problem with the 4850's and they don't sell them actually. They also aren't avaiable for new m17 purchases. They got a mail few minutes ago to canel all orders for the 4850's. sad...
It seems to be a general problem with the 4850's (not only with the upgrade kit)

FYI -- still available on site with one week dispatch time if you order the ATI

Well, this sucks that the 4850s have been cancelled, I was actually beginning to look forward to being able to afford the M17, and upgrade it :(

Thats odd, ive talked with some reps at customer service (on the phone) + the technicians (by email) all of them confirming they sell the 4850's and even asked me if i wanted to place an order for them. And thats less than 24 hours ago.

    Hi guys,

I have just phoned to order my 4850s and spoke to tech support, a guy called Will; says he was just on the phone to somebody saying the same thing...no 4850s yet as an upgrade....they have not been tested properly.(he asked the tech boss called Heindrich about it) He is going to phone me and the other person as soon as he has an answer. The good part was that he sounds really keen to sort it out and find out what is going on.

    well pissed off!

Yeah, I wll do for sure mate!

I forgot to add that he said he believed that we will get the upgrade just not now.
He never said that he thought we wouldnt get the upgrade.
He seemed very eager to talk but I just turned into this lemon after he told me I couldnt order there and then.
Still not happy at the telephone support...I was spoken to in German twice..which is not a problem really but I was cut-off on three occasions.

still got some work to do!

lets hope I get some good info from this Will guy!

    @PmanUK
Hello mate, thanks for the offer, am gonna pass on the M17 if it never gets the 4850s; it just becomes too far a step backwards from my current desktop to justify the fairly large cost.
The M17 with 4850s would have been perfect, but obviously they've ruined that a bit now (for all of us); so looks like Im gonna have to shell out more money; a lot like you; and until I can see firm confirmation the M17 WILL have the 4850s, I'm not going to pay out for one; as I'd be financing to do it; trying to cancel a finance because AW f-ed up could be a right PITA.

I'd actually have prefered a 4850 Xfire setup as well, the parts seem to be cheaper for the same performance. Shame the GTX280 SLI laptops don't support them!

They've been cancelled? Again? Bloody hell.

Do NOT buy from OcUK. Their customer support is multiple times worse than Alienware's. Fine as long as nothing goes wrong but as soon as it does, you are completely and royally screwed.

Believe it or not, I think some M17x owners feel the pain with you fellas. Who doesn't want their favorite brand (Alienware) to provide the best products to everyone?

I would call and demand some type of compensation for this BS they are making all of you go through. Particularly those that already ordered and are getting canceled.

By the way, Marius, if you can't get an M17 now, then I don't know. This is the best chance you'll get.

yeah, I know many of us jumped on the band-wagon more in hope but Alienware should not have taken peoples orders for these cards without being sure they could provide them.

Apart from that Im not that bothered as I might get a new processor from Ebay with my money.
I just dont know whether to get the QX9300 or X9100....I like the sound of a faster dual-core really. Are there any new processors out which will fit our M17s??
(off to work now...will pick it back up when I return)

    thanks.

The old m17x was outperformed by the "new m17" but than they put two 9800's in the m17x and boom it was faster than the m17^^

Now they put 4850's in the m17 but it's still not faster than the new m17x with dual 280^^ (am I right?) ...

Just today sb said to me: "Comparing is the beginning of dissapointment"
    (15 credits are 1+ or A+ and 14 A ... last year everyone had in "programming" 14 ;) we were happy^^ Now some have 15 and eg I 14 ... )

    It's a devil circle ... (Teufelskreis)

Now they cancled the 4850s for the second time ... I am confused^^ What's wrong ... I don't belive that they have problems like "we ran out of them" ...

X9100 and QX9300 are the fastest supported Processors at the moment. You will be more than satisfied with an x9100. I know both Rob and I are.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, even when it comes to RMA, over the last 5 years I've been absolutely fine using them, over 20+ orders. They like all the big companies have had batch patches of customer service; doesn't mean they're universally bad, and 20x more customers complain about something, than will praise a service.

And most importantly, if you go with the X9100 modding won't be needed for the shuttering that the quad causes.

I have a qx9300, its fast but stutters. The stutter isn't that often or bad but when it happens I want to throw my laptop out a window.....

I will be happy with my x9100 when it gets here (by the end of the week). Due to the hassle associated with the stutter and quads I have to say just get the x9100, it's much cheaper anyway and will give more than ample gaming performance as well as real-world performance. Only benchies will be less, but I am sure you will cope.

edit: There is no hardware modding needed for fixing stutter, it is a software problem. Just a heads up as this is a common misconception
