Good luck with whatever at Hospital!
Aye, I'll be going base spec and then upgrading it to 2x 320 WD Scorpio Black, 4GB 1066 RAM and either an X9100 or QX9300...erring on the side of the X9100 though just because Im not sure if I can be bothered with the hassle. Ofc Im then going to get that OCZ bios and see if the system is stable at 3.57 :D
The CPU is last priority though, simply because its the smallest bottleneck in comparison to the rest of the system.

*BUT* I can't afford to do it all at once; wish I could!

well here is my latest email, i called them after this and they said they expect to sell as upgrade once stock has risen and will be sept/oct time

    Dear Mr. Collins,

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I found it on the website. The new 4850 are available only with the new systems. If you look into the M17 tech specs there you can find what other graphics cards can be upgraded, for now only 3870 is an option. Maybe in a time this upgrade option will be available, but I cannot assure you right now.

Thank you for your comprehension and best regards

    Thank you for choosing ALIENWARE.

    Kind Regards

A shame man, especially as you seemed relatively happy with your M17. Hope you like your new Clevo...what did you go for in the end?

We'll have to compare 3dmark results (if you disable Physx)

before you get all angry at alienware you have to realize they are the only ones getting these cards... there are not many people making them @ ALL
its standard procedure as well as any company

Also be grateful you have the chance to even get them ...since no one else did....

Be happy with you clevo m98nu though

for me this is just a repeat of the shocking service i recieved 2/3 months ago about the upgrade.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me

I ordered the one i linked earlier.

p8700, 4gb ram, only one HDD so i can upgrade myself at a later date. Twin 280 GTX's

I dont know if i will swap the quad out and put it in the new one yet or not? what do you guys think? are they good and solid with an ES quad, overclockable?

    Pete

Hello again. Just had another chat with AW and for once got an english lad who was very clued up and told me the exact score. When they released the cards just about 90% of m17 owners opted for an upgrade which was way more than they expected and clearly too many people for the stock they have, hence the new systems only. Will only be a matter of weeks till they get more stock to allow upgrades. As for the two they sent me he in no uncertain terms said just keep them as all they can do is charge me. Obviously couldnt say it straight out as he works there. So sod AW and im keeping the cards :)

Understandable mate, looks like a good machine. As far as I know, the Clevos are fine with Quad processors; I think they're mean to be releasing some BIOS updates for them soon to allow BIOS overclocking as well.
Could be wrong on that though.

    Enjoy the machine man!

can you bemore specific in what aspect?

I do love my clevo. at stock clocks 500/1250/800 and a single card I can max out any game except for one (we all know what that is) and I can push them a lot. I am also getting sli and I can't wait. but I might be selling it.

Thanks to all the guys earlier in the thread for advising me on which processor to get...I agree X9100 for the M17 seems the right choice.
Im in a conundrum though because if I spend my money on the processor now knowing my luck the 4850s will be available soon? If I buy the processor with my money that Ive collected for these 4850s then it may take me a month or two to get enough money spare again if they do come on sale to us soon...I wanna be one of the first to get the 4850s....naturally.

    decisions,,,decisions!!

Who thinks the 4850s will be available in the next few days??

You already have a nice CPU for the moment . If it were me i would wait for the videocards since those will yield so much more performance then the X9100 would.

this is the Alienware offical line now, i had an email sent to me which contained some notes that were sent round to AW staff

unfortunatley they know i post here (hi all you little spies) and i promised not to quote it directly

however they are being told it will take 8 weeks for stock to reach a point before they will even THINK about selling them. they will "re-evalueate" the situation then

for me, this is just too long, and too much back and forth

I expect they will release them sooner, more likely in the next 4 weeks, I say this because the flagship isn't the M17 its the M17x, and if you had to purchase a new laptop, which would you pick? The new or the old version? I doubt they are recieving that many purchases for the M17 with 4850's to soak up all they stock they currently have. We just need to keep calling and pestering them to let them know WE WANT THEM BAD!

but if 90% of ALL m17 owners want the cards, they will want to build up stock. Which can obviously only be done as they are supplied to them

Well, the cards are actually coming in stock; but given the relative newness of these cards in circulation; I'd be surprised if they're coming through in massive bulk; they're high end cards, in high demand, and AW aren't the only ones looking at them; I'm pretty sure ATI has had orders from MSI, and probably a few of the other large manufacturers such as Clevo and Arima directly.
Remember, dependant on thier priority on these cards, they cannot magic them out of nowhere, they have to be produced by TSMC, and obviously tested, binned etc.
Whilst I'd imagine Alienware will have hundreds in the next few months; from how long its taken them to reach the point they're willing to offer them to new buyers (yay!) from point of first introduction (probably the MSI/Advent 6 months ago), I think it's fair to say ATI isn't pumping out massive amounts of these chips; or not in the scheme of things; I'd imagine they're focusing on the middle of the range cards; becuase the large OEM system builders will all want these for thier mid range laptops, and this is where the major money is. At the end of the day, high end parts are prestige parts; and they aren't the major breadwinner for ATI.

I would be surprised if there aren't other companies evaluating them at the very least. Just because the MSI G series and M17 are the only ones in common circulation now; doesn't mean they're not being ordered/tested behind closed doors.
Several other manufacturers have previously had close ties with ATI for notebook chips, and I'd be surprised if they've dropped that; Acer/Toshiba et al.

While I understand what you are saying, what i am trying to say is that those cards in stock for new customers are going to stay there for a while, because looking at the economy and at the new laptop they are offering, who would want to purchase an older laptop? If AW is smart they will release the cards for upgrades in the next two to three weeks.

Who would want to purchase an 'old laptop'? The tech savvy person buying a 2K laptop who's done his research?
We also don't know how many of these cards Alienware actually have right now; as they're keeping hold of some for replacements; I'd guess it's not really that many.

OH, and on other news, I've ordered! Waiting to here if the BNPL finance has been accepted or declined, but given my credit history is flawless and I've paid off previous finances, have phone contracts for the last couple of years I can't imagine being declined, except perhaps because of my age (21).

    I've ordered:
    Skullcap
    1920x1200 screen
    P8400
    2GB RAM
    160GB HDD
    4850 Crossfire
Alienrespawn discs (because outside of work I can afford to be lazy)

Will get the RAM and HDD upgraded ASAP ofc, and get hold of an X9100 in the next 3 months.

    Looking forward to it!!

Gratz on the order, the finance is normally declined there and then if they ask for documents it's just to backup what u already said

I am sure you will be very happy with you m17!

At this rate I might have the clevo on the same desk as my m17 or it might get dumped in server room as an extra server lol

Haha, well I've just got the email confirming the finance has been provisionally approved; I've just got to fill in the 'welcome pack' and send it back. I'll fill that in later; and send it off tomorrow. I don't get paid til Friday so them recieving it and taking money out tomorrow theoretically could be a very bad start hahaha

I'm sure you'll be happy with your Clevo as well Pmanuk, I'd have been tempted to go Clevo myself in your position; but seeing as I have the availability of these cards in front of me; I can see little reason to pay more for the X1/Commanche SLI when, all being equal, performance should be very similar.
I haven't been messed around with AW, and am hoping to never have to speak to them haha
