yessir mandrake. and with all the rest...they ran fine with stock drivers...it was when they started over clocking that the serious problems started to show them selves....

10k stock is a very nice score indeed.

sli 280M stock scores worse, so I'm not sure what there is to complain about.

How do you guys think dual 4850's stack up against dual GTX 260m's and GTX 280m's? Do you think it's worth springing for the M17x just to get the 280's?

if you are getting a new machine get the m17x as it supports quads better, has better cooling, and is new mxm socket.

The m17 is sadly EOL now since the mxm socket has changed

I think they were asking for like $560 for a pair of cards back when they were pretending they would give upgrades.....I don't know if that includes a 2nd crossfire cable or not.

that price isn't the same price that we would pay...it would be more since we own the notebook already.

no that is the price for just the cards, the upgrade is 400 over a single 3870 when you config a new machine

I know, it is cheaper than you are used to with those nvidia cards haha

yeah, them cards cost 515 bucks a piece..and i was willing to grab two if they worked in the d901c/np9262...then thought about it and liked to slapped myself for a minute..lmao
sold the laptop and bought 2 gtx295 for almost the same amount of money.

nah, im talking about the nvidia cards at 515 bucks a piece. im with you on ati cards costing less, but you make up the price when you have to buy a qx9300 or higher cpu to push them...(just a little humor there- lol)
speaking of ES, since 98 percent of the people will buy es over retail on the extremes....they are cutting that out of the scoring now. only retail and i think oem cpus will count for points....so pretty soon...it may filter down into the laptop communities...something to think about when some one creats a pole on it.

i think they will be 650 for them. since it's 250 to upgrade from one 3870 to crossfire. then 400 for those cards.

then the other 3870 in there would be 250 also. making the true cost 650 for the 4850 CF.

I know what you are saying, but people were getting quotes ranging from mid 500's to mid 400's for a pair of cards. granted...none got sent out haha

nah, the price isn't bad at all..but that ati driver support is!
    390 Euros = 548.41800 U.S. dollars

they are like...heres your cards...now go....and while your at it...loose our number and address for information on driver support, but here is our compliment box...be sure to give us 5 stars..thanks for your time...lol. (just funning with ati)

i really want to try some 4890's though. i have 4 slots and no 3dmark06 records

But in terms of performance how much better really are the 280's to the 4850's? Knowing how these things go even if AW realesed new cards in the future for the M17x I don't think it would be very likely that they would work in the older models. Maybe I'm wrong though but thats how its seemed to work in the older laptops 9700, 7700 n so on.

I wasn't aware that there have been issues with quads in the M17. What's been the complication with them?

I wish they offered the X9100 for the M17x. Does anyone know why they aren't offering it?

    haha

the 4890's are benchmark demons in multi gpu setups. I am still sad that no 4890x2 ever came out

edit: and the quads in m17 cause stuttering. As long as new cards are mxm 3.0 like the m17x then they will be compatible

in all reality...all these high end cards are within 5 fps of each other in the ultra high class of things (meaning most games). we all come here to throw numbers around for the most part, but at the end of the day..4850/4870/260m/280 you aren't loosing....anything below this....your loosing...cpt for 3dmark06 where a pair of 3870's still holds the record at 17.4k...hahaha go 3870's!..lol

As soon as the right people get their hands on a pair of them you will see haha. Whats sad is these seem to be almost as capable as the desktop version. I believe I had 17k with my i7 920 and 4850 CF all stocked. (stock meant 625 MHz on the core I believe and 925 on mem)

Just gonna get the crysis benchies done shortly and post them. Still juggling a baby and a laptop. Have played Fear 2, Fallout 3, Mass Effect and COD4 & 5 and had all settings on max/ultra with everything turned on and running at 1920x1200 and I can tell you now that these 4850's just laugh at them all. Glorious gaming I have to say. Even playing Crysis at high and some ultra at 1920x1200 game just cruises along.

Although, sadly, since I got my GTX 275 in SLI on desktop, I have only played WC3 and UT3....2 easy to run games haha, need to play some Crysis on there. Never played Crysis maxed AND smooth before....haha

Unlike an Nvidia version they are; thats why I've been keeping my eye on them so much. :)

They have the full 800 shader pipeline design of the desktop part; except running at a slower 500/800 clock compared to 625/990 of the desktop part; again with GDDR3 same as the desktop card.

Will have a play around with them properly once I have the new CPU in the near future; however will get some early benching done for you ASAP. The 48series weren't massively faster than the 3 series in 3dmark 06; in everything else they're much stronger.

Is the p8600 holding me back that much?

putting a better cpu will only up your gpu score by 100 max. so i am guessing that your driver is garbage. the w90 was also getting 9900-10,400 stocked so you should get the same or higher.

Sorry mate, it won't. My p8400 GPU score was 8800, with a similar cpu at 2.65 that rose to 9300. Due to driver/crossfire limitations, these cards really do become faster with a better CPU. Mind you this was with 9.7 cats where extra power wasn't limited so much by a rubbish AW driver.

Alex sorry I never got back to you the other day. With the 9.7's Vantage constantly scores around 10k and 3D06 is still pretty poor at around 15.5-16k. Getting the idea that theses cards dont like 3DMark. Not too concerned as other than Crysis I can play every single game I have on ultra high at 1920x1200 with full AA and AF

I have found a work around for the temp issue now. If you disable crossfire first then you can open up everest without it crashing the laptop. Then just re enable crossfire and away you go with everest working with temps on show. After extensive playing around its clearly the driver causing the problem. But this method works fine for the time being. Also you can use ATI Tray Tool but you need to do a work round for Vista 64 to ignore driver signature enforcement.

Interesting info, its looking like my screen isn't faulty, and is just a combination of vista and my still admittedly not amazing panel making a small issue obvious; so I ordered my X9100 earlier. Once that's here I'll be wanting to keep a close eye on temps.

Yeah... and we would like to see some benches (numbers) as well, please.

Could You Guys check how Battlefield Heroes performs?
With 3870s I am able to play smoothly only at 1400x700 with medium details...

    Hopefully 4850s will do better

    Cheers
