the ones for the M17 are the only 1GB 4850's right? All the MSI ones are 512?
-
doesnt matter they will both work fine in either system
-
except the one in m17 has a crossfireX connector which is absent in the 512mb version.

Ask for johnathan

I'd always wondered if it'd help to get the cards if we quoted the part number...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320459917485&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
In case anyone is interested... i was going to see if they would do a buy it now sale, but i think i am moing toward the m17x with discounts. -
well damn!...now that's a good price..to bad it wasn't a buy it now price...lol
although that screen would come out immediately though -
hook yourself up John. Then we can do some head to head benching.
-
i pm'd the guy a question or two.
-
Yeah... i saw that when i was looking through the alienware "Outlet"... AW also has a decent deal... http://cgi.ebay.com/Alienware-Area-51-m17-Laptop-ATI-CrossFireX-Skullcap_W0QQitemZ180443156380QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLaptops_Nov05?hash=item2a03400f9c
now if u could grab the 4850s from AW, you should be in good shape... -
To much upgrading right out of the Gate with needing a new screen and RAM will take that $1000.00 machine up to $1300.00ish...
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Exactly what I was thinking Quad. And let us not forget that it is only $1000 when there are 0 bids on it....lets see what it sells at
EDIT: and after just looking at it again haha, the price is now MUCH higher -
He was probably asked to change it to a buy it now for the BCB.
-
for me...not a problem..i have ram and screens or access to other screens.
but now it's up there. and since the cards them selves are what..700 bucks? (speculation of course)
guess we asked one to many questions or someone pointed his pricing in the right direction....lol -
$1650.00 buy it now is not bad but 0 warranty for that kind of scratch can be a tough pill to swallow then throw in some upgrades and your over 2k ... Still a nice machine though ...
The cards should have cost $225.00 each from Alienware directly but since they cant be ordered...... -
I asked him if he could change the price... didnt know he would do it so soon...
was hoping it would be around $1500
-
going from a "where you can actually buy them" sort of thing.
so even at 500 bucks for two.. then 1,650 is a good price, but 1,000 dollars was a FAR better price..lol
quoted from ebay listing.
The 4850s in this system run in the high 70's to low 80's(usually 81c) when playing COD:MW2
now that's pretty damn hot, for a 1440 x 900 resolution
what do you suppose the temps will be...gaming at 1920x1200 with 2xAA 4xAF....
alienware knew what they we're doing when selling the lower end panels...(speculations of course)
edit: where is ichime at.... i NOW like talking in AA & AF tones...rotflmao..thanks quadzilla for showing me the path...haha -
The cards at 1920x1200 are going to get pretty toasty .. I would say close to 90s average without a cooler ..
The machines thermal design is just not what other machines have thats for sure...
Still great machines though and in many ways i like it more then the M17x especially after throwing in a nice screen..

I never got over selling my whitebook, is why I want to get an M17 again haha
There was just something about them that is great! -
They are great when you think about all they can do + be actually very portable and light...
Going from the M17 to the M17x is a pretty big change even though there similar in size... -
yeah, great bios and over clocking...just lacking on the video now that all the newer stuff is out. but if you could run 4850's.....man...the white book would be a sure contender. thats for sure!
-
That intel XTU program is outta this world for the M17... You can go absolutely nuts with all t he changes... Most of them are not for the better but atleast they give you the option
...
-
now see...that's what i would be more into...tweaking everything on the machine..
-
Ram voltages ,timings , CPU voltages,Multipliers,FSB etc etc ... Crazy stuff man for a laptop...
If the W90 had all that it would have been nutz....
Sadly since the M17x uses the 9400m those options are not there...
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I am pretty surprised that no one got an XTU program to work on the W90 actually....ironic given it was introduced for the x38 chipset.....
-
Whats even sadder is that machine has such monsterous cooling it would have been perfect for it ...
If you saw the Copper block it had for the CPU cooling you would faint ... The thing by itself was like 1/2 a pound lol...
What i think it boiled down to though was Asus didnt want to deal with any support calls for that machine thats why they keep there overclocking to a bare minimum.. To bad they got a zillion calls for everything else that was wrong with that machine ... -
Which bios is this?
-
When you install the OCZ bios along side an Xtreme CPU you can then run Intel XTU software within windows ...
I had my CPU running at like 3.4ghz but it stuttered the machine so badly it was not even funny ... I cranked up the voltage and voila...
-
yea, that whitebook had all the makings of doing great things....to bad the d901c had to crush it's dreams....lol ..j/k
but seriously though...they we're on to something, but came out too soon.. needed a bit more planing on the cooling and it would have been a monster. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
What XTU program were you using Quad? Clearly this is sought after information! haha
-
Cant remember where i found it but i have it stashed away on my hard drive... Might have actually been on these forums by some random person that posted a link but was over looked by the majority of people here...
I know when i told Don about it he was drooling all over wishing he had kept his Whitebook lol.... -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
And you say that simply boosting the cpu voltage solved your stutter problems?!
May just buy a 2nd QX9300 for the M17 I hope to get!
(friend buying the desktop was a no show today- he is getting bugged to death by me now!)
-
did that dude from killernotebooks ever get it..i forgot his name now...the one always talking about having something up his sleeve.
-
Nope it did not solve the stutter problems but again i never had it to bad to begin with...
I should have worded that post above better but actually increasing the voltage made it stutter worse..
There were people in the past who i think hit 3.6ghz on the Qx9300 in the M17 .. Not sure how much stuttering was going on then though lol..
From all my testing the higher the clocks the worse it got at a point and the magic spot for me was 3.2ghz for benching...
I scored 4900 on the CPU score in 06 which i think i still one of the better or best scores i have seen...
Hope everything works out on your desktop sale..
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the killer notebooks dude is Mark, and yes, he had an XTU program that he hoards pretty greedily for just his customers, and must threaten death on them or something as none of them have leaked it yet
-
I dont think he ever gave it away to anyone but his people who purchased the machine and im almost certain they signed in blood to never share it with anyone..
The version i got was released by Asus (of all people) and it just so happens to work with the OCZ bios and an Xtreme CPU. ..
Guess there was more then one reason they were called KILLER NOTEBOOKS .. -
im talking about the guy that was always bragging and putting us on hold when it came time to show results...always talking about he left it on his flash drive or something...that guy
-
I think that was M hooper or Mr.hooper or Burt Reynolds lol i cant remember now but i think thats who you are speaking of.. I remember him fondly and also MastaMarak i think was his name .. He slammed on the Whitebook like it was going out of style lol...
-
yeah. that guy...rotflmao. now how could i forget his name....
wonder if he is still looking for benchmarks on his flash drive...lmao!
cool dude...when he wasn't looking for benchmarks though. -
Yeah for some reason i still think he is looking for that elusive flash drive... Best of luck to him and i hope he finds it ...
-
if he would have gotten his benchmarks out sooner....i would probably have a m17x or a w90 right now....by way of a whitebook....

so that guy got it working on his m17x? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
No, pretty sure he used to have an M17. It will not even install on an M17x, says "tried to install on an unsupported platform". It knows whether it sees an intel chipset or not
4850's Finally out for the m17
