I am probably going for their 15 incher then :( No mention of Sandy bridge CPU's, no mention of a new GPU for the m15x. Ah well.

no updates on m11x or m15x...... wow... in my opinion weak CES 2011 for Dell/Alienware.
Just updates on 17inch monsters and desktops.

    What happened with portability ?!

I had the money to fork out for a Sandy Bridge Area 51 ALX and a M17x R3 but looks like I’ll just be building my own pc with this news...guess i'll wait till the 10th to see the exact configuration options on the website...

So the only gain I see is USB 3.0 and upto 32 Gb of RAM

Down grade on the screen, and only a single GPU option

Hope that the GPU info is wrong

You're not reading it wrong, but just because P67 does support dual-GPU doesn't mean it has to use dual-GPU.

As iaTa mentioned there might be other reasons why they chose to go for the P67 besides CF/SLi.

This is something that is unnecessary, and if I wanted the technology, I should be able to buy, seperately, an HDMI dongle and wireless receiver for my TV, to have this capability. Having 1 piece of this equation built into the laptop, adding weight/cost adds no desirability to the M17x

IMO the switch to WLED isn't that bad... But it's still a downgrade - but it's not that hard a pill to swallow because dell WLEDs have been pretty good recently.

    2GB 6970M - Perhaps it's a dual-gpu card, like the 5970????????

People were saying it didn't support dual GPU so the R3 would not have it. If it does support it it may still have a xfire option.

I'm wondering where all of you are thinking this thing is plastic? The body still looks like aluminum and wraps all the way underneath the bottom and over the top.

Other than that, if no SLI/XFire is actually confirmed and not still speculated here, then that really blows.

There are a lot of things (spec wise) that it's not confirmed to have or not have.

So hold off with the "sky is falling " posts Chicken Littles.

When you see the product on the site where you can spec it out for purchase and you have some tech blog get to touch it and tell us more and give us more pics. Then we'll know what's up for sure.

The specs announced so far are just new features so far. Hell for those still wanting the 1900x1200 RGB LED screen that may be an option instead of the new "Wide FHD WLED 120Hz display (1920 x 1080 resolution)" announced. You never know until you actually see what full list of options are.

Aside from not *yet* disclosing all the GPU possibilities, going to a 16:9 screen ruins the R3 for me... It's a deal breaker.

Yeah, but the M17x-R3 got that shiny grill work.... my guess is then that the AW name will be spun off in a couple years if not dead altogether :(

Yes, I am being premature, but really... they are not capitalizing on the splash they made last year for momentum.... that shows something is not right. I am wondering if they concluded that the mobile gaming market is going towards tablet junk and concluded there was no reason to push the line except for a modest refresh.

The XPS line features much weaker hardware than the Alienwares....particularly when it comes to GPUs, they are not phasing out Alienware at all.

I know you would not Mandrake, but it is a nice feature to have on an allegedly mobile device

I seem to remember your avatar being the F7 key on your R1 that toggled between the IGP and GTX 280m's ;) So it must mean something to you!

People were making the assumption that it wouldn't support dual GPU because no mention of CF/SLi was on the Dell website, not because of the P67 chipset.

    Might have a point...
AW - gaming - not the focus of the dell presentation - but important
to get the "mainstream" public, they put out specs the "stupid" public likes/wants like 3D. Perhaps in reality, Crossfire and RGB doesn't really ring a bell in people's head's so they might of just axed it for the presentation.

That is a big difference, you could also argue that the build quality and cooling are much more substantial on the alienwares (as well as bios overclocking options)

He has a point because he probably works for DELL. Why not mention continued support for xfire and RGBLED in the first place to quell any enthusiast rage like we just saw here though? Not very smart for presentation.

    Plus 1

They talked about AW for a sec, then said... We have not forgotten about the non-gamers out there... lol... wait a sec... they actually forgot about the GAMERS all together practically....

I am sure they are going to open their booth and then more will be unveiled, but still... I wanted to see something new and inventive... I guess I am happy with the Razor switchblade, even though its not going to make it to market. (Trust me, I want to eat those words).

Whats with all the panic about no SLI/XFIRE? Didn't AW do the same thing last time when they released their m17x with 1 one the most powerfull mobile gpu's (hd5870), and only offering two of them after a few weeks/months?

I'm sure it will work out. Why would AW offer only 1 gpu to compete with more mainstream gaming notebooks like the asus g series, if they can fit in 2 gpu's aswell, just like they do now. You can chose 1 or two gpu's according to your budget.

Besides, even if AW won't offer dual gpu options, there's always other brands that do offer xfire/sli, and imo the latest generation of barebones don't look as ugly as they used to. So if you are truly into gaming and benchmarking, the demise of AW in the 'pro-gamer' market should not be the end of the world, unless you value looks over gaming capabilities and would still buy an AW with 1 gpu over a barebone with 2 gpu's.

The one thing that I don't like about the revision is that they didn't redesign the top of the screen to the one the m15x has, so you have a nicer shape instead of the 'pyramid' form.

I wonder what Core i5 options there are for next week if the release dual core mobile Sandy Bridge was to be delayed until February. Maybe they'll just ship next month. Clarksfield was in need of a major replacement.

Wow, where was I? This thread has exploded. What are the stats on the new M17x R3? Theres 25 pages from the last 20 hours

EDIT: Oh, I see the pic above my post now

I see 16:9 Turn off, Now RGB LED, Turn off, Same design on the back as the M11x, Turn off. That back is good for the M11x, But for the M17x, the R1/R2 back was much more sleek and sexy.

HDMI in is pretty neat, the 3D gaming is a nice addition too.
Other than that nothing surprising... 6870M and 460GTX and SB processors were to expect..
