It's even more of a failure if you can only have single gtx 460 to power a 120 Hz 3d screen which takes twice the power so 1920x1080 times 2. You could hardly even play anything at even medium settings....
-
dell should go to hell for this...
-
Well at a single gpu it's not limited to only what's listed. Hopefully more will come like the 470m etc. It's the lack on Xfire and SLI being mentioned that worries me the most.
-
No RGBLED - I don't see any proof in this. Dell has made 1080P RGBLED before, who says they can't do RGBLED with 120HZ. Plus games will looks smoother.
No CF - No proof atm?
1200p vs. 1080p - Negligible difference IMO. -

theres your proof -
I only hope I can squeeze two ATI6970 into the R2 and I am happy. Should last for next two years and then hopefully there will be a good R4.

The R3 seems to be positioned to directly compete against the G73 line from Asus now.....guess it will be a good year for Clevo/Sager......

IMO, they're competing too much with those-budget gaming laptops like the G73 if those specs are true ... Better get their crap together, Dell-AW. -
Yep if this continues like this, the AW r4 will be more than an epic fail... No dual gpus ohh God...

Or we could see the possibility of an M18x taking control of the Dual GPU and RGB...

M17x -- 3D Alienware, "most powerful laptop" ever....
Don't know how Dell can state this with only a single GPU option -
-
I just asked a Dell rep.... and he said the new M17x will offer dual card support.
But I won't believe it until I see it on the website. -
Man this sucks...like 4 days wasted for me lol. I feel bad for those who waited since mid December...at those specs, what a waste of time.
-
What's the big deal with the wireless HD thing? Can anyone give me a hypothetical situation this will be used for?
-
Looks like that's it for product announcements. So long AW nice knowing ya?
-
R4 will most prob do away with the GPU and rely solely on intergrated GPU and then call it the most powerful...
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
-
Is that it for Alienware? no more announcments? No new m15x? no m11x r3?
-
benthedogtrainer Notebook Evangelist
No big groundbreaking products, like last year's Alienware M11x.
-
so no m11x or 13x ? :<

For CES 2011, Alienware has a new version of its 17-inch M17x laptop. Called the M17x R3 (we assume it's the third revision of the M17x), it has several GPU options, such as the 1.5GB GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M, the 1GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6870M, or the 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6970M.
Besides HDMI-out, it also supports HDMI-in, which means one can hook up a gaming console or other HDMI device and use the M17x's display, which is a feature we wish more laptops had. You also get USB 3.0, optional 3D support, and support for up to 32GB of RAM -
All this wait for nothing.
-
Wireless HD for gaming.
If I want to game using my TV I can hook up the lappy to my TV with a HDMI cable. Will need to use an external keyboard and mouse anyway, so I can place the m17x close to the tv anyway. No need for wireless thus. -

Interesting line on the XPS 17 specs:
New XPS 17 Laptop:
* The i7 version now supports Optimus, unless configured with the optional 3D FHD panel – this uses the discrete GPU full time
Why would having a 3D 120Hz panel mean that you cannot use Optimus. Intel IGP not able to do 120Hz 1080p but surely you could just run it at 60Hz. Might explain why Optimus is not available on M17x if it's only available with 3D panel. -
seems like ORIGIN will be the new alienware
*prepares to take cover* -

Intel H67 and P67 Chipsets
Intel always launches a new chipset when they announce new processor microarchitecture. The new 6 series chipsets, P67 and H67, are fundamentally very similar, with a few minor differences, mainly the support for multiple graphics. While both chipsets have 16 lanes of PCI Express 2.0, the P67 will officially support single x16 and dual-GPUs in a two x8 cards configuration, while the H67 will only support single x16 configuration. Of course there is nothing to prevent manufacturers to add additional chips such as the Lucid Hydra or Nvidia NF200 for extra PCI Express lanes, but we do not think that there wil be many H67 boards with such chips, considering that the H67 is designed for mainstream users. It is worth noting that while the P67 will support dual-GPUs in a two x8 cards configuration, Intel’s official block diagram has this feature as optional, so it will be up to manufacturers to enable such features. -
So they turned the XPS 17 into the new m17x.

This site says the P67 Express supports dual GPU

am I reading this wrong or are they wrong? -
Well see the good side... The R2 is still more powerful atm in terms of gpu. (if the r3 lacks of sli/crossfire). Good for the R2 users.
