Both main issues have been fixed (to a degree). DPC Latency fixed via the A03 bios. Most fixing the throttling issue (espeacially with the QX9300s) with ThrottleStop (a bios update to fix this would be nice Dell).

no one has one in their hands and already saying what it does or doesnt have and hat it can or can not do. pretty standard every year around this time.
then when the facts come out..people go back and try to down play all the negative talk...
im just waiting to see who is wrong and who is right..now.
and if they ae trying to pass off a hybrid sli/crossfire as main stream crossfire/sli.
with 3d *facepalm*
forget about running 1080p more like 1024/768 -
maybe they have new products and they're creating suspense
-
Wow I really hope there's still some sort of surprise left and they announce an M11x or an M13-4x...
Really letting people down.
-.- -
I still don't think AW is done revealing everything yet about other products. As for the M17x-R3, it doesn't come as a major surprise about the lack of RGB LED, we already knew that a while ago. It does look thinner vs R2 so they could have either downgraded it to a single card machine or implemented more efficient cooling, that remains to be seen.
Overall I'm not impressed with the R3, it has some nice additions but for me RGB LED takes precedence over everything else. Who knows, AW may surprise us with a new performance SKU. When I spoke to Gerhard a year ago, he promised a new gaming laptop that would "blow me away" so I certainly hope he wasn't talking about this thing. For existing R2 owners, there is hope we may be able to drop 6970M Xfire in our systems since Clevo will soon have that option for their existing systems.
So I guess today's announcement amounted to this:
width='480' height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1ytCEuuW2_A?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1ytCEuuW2_A?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='480' height="385"></embed></object>Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
A M17x without xf/sli options makes absolutely no sense... especially with the full HD 3D capable screen... The announcements are really disappointing so far, but let's wait and see on the 10th when we should be able to configure it online.
Too bad no 470m or even 485m apparently... maybe a 6970m to put in my M15x -
I am new to the whole product release routine and fanfare, what reason would they have outside of product delays to not strike while the attention is hot? Counter another competitor's product at some point?
-
4O4 is full alienwares xD in the ces streaming... guess what alienware sponsored that xD
-
I am surprised that we still don't have "live" pics of the new M17X. Shouldn't some journalist over there be able to see them in real person, take some pics and send it over...
-
Does it have Usb 3.0 on the new r3 m17x or Delienware failed again like they did with the hinges on m11x?
-
I am hoping that the 3D is merely an option along with the standard RGB LED screen
And of course SLI or CF -
Up to 32gb of ram... Holy cow... mmm Wondering how many slots...

Hurray! No silver!
So we're left with black... like every other laptop out there...
Or red.... ... >.<
Not really selling me with the new lid styling either. To be honest I prefer the existing look on the R1/R2.
I'm hoping by the Summer that they (re)introduce silver, and at least a GTX480M, if not 500 Series, or I'll be picking up an R2 at the Outlet.
Dell, this is (yet another) multimedia notebook. There are lots of these. What Alienware makes are gaming machines. Please take note. -
it definitely looks cheap plastic
-
I think from the video posted above, it is confirmed that it is plastic as the guy says "it's got a new soft touch feel" which is made with "high end" plastics... It's that rubbery feel from the Latitude Z I suspect. It's a nice feel, the problem is the the rubbery coating tends to peel off with time and travel.

I'm sad to silver not listed, I love my silver M17x... it really does look good in person, the photos just don't do it justice IMHO. -

I preferred silver of all the colors....that is why I have it

lol I knew there would be no 11 13 or 15 announcement as they always leak well ahead of to

Laptops generally are not like cars. The more I think about it I cannot fathom how Dell would even bother to announce an m17x flagship at CES, and not have it capable of Beating it's predecessor. Even if it's barely. I think Dell understands that if this is a gaming brand, video cards are probably the biggest feature of this machine and my money is on sli or Xfire being an option or just having a silly powerful single card do the job.
I thought about it and wondered if they went more for weight savings and a slimmer profile teamed with better efficiency overall... But what the heck is the xps line for? The further they stray from gaming the more they step the boundary of xps and it may hurt xps sales.
If there is no rgb led I think the r2 owners can feel satisfied they have a great screen. Personally I thought my MacBook pro 17 screen looked better but the os looked much sharper and I think that helped the illusion.
About me... I don't care for..
3d
USB 3.0
Wireless hd to a tv
I turn my lappy on to game I have no need for any of those which sucks so far that they haven't mentioned anything performance wise that excites me.
Did you guy also notice in that link...

More interesting than Alienware's CES announcements, it looks like they will be competing with Razer (who makes great accessories currently) soon.
An Optimus Maximus-esque keyboard and a 7" footprint. Razer brought in some guys from OQO, a company that made impressive 5" UMPCs, but failed due to the high price of their UMPC. The specs aren't finalized yet, but it seems worth a shot, heck it's still different enough from the M11x.

your out here with me. and not all the leds are cheapies.
-
Drop the M17x to a single GPU, scrap the M15x and introduce that M14x 5150Joker heard about....
Maybe Dell is a little envious of one of their competitors? -
I think that what is not understood on this forum is the following: most NBR members including myself represent the power hungry, the hardcore gamers looking for the most performance but we represent a small percentage of Alienware sales especially since Dell took over. Alienware is now selling to a lot of kids looking for a hip and cool design and a lot of adult gamers that have been wanting an Alienware for a decade. Their target market has broaden with time and we are a dying species of buyers.
No company wants to make an amazing notebook just for us and the truth is that Alienware still kicks even with the R3. -
oQo... I had a friend do a research paper on that company almost 4 or 5 years ago... Not too successful, but they built some cool ultraportibles

Review Alienware M17x Gaming Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
Its m17x with rgb, and it still sucks

Compare to this IPS laptop:

TN matrix is a piece of crap, no matter what type of backlight they are using. Only IPS, and apple know this, that's why they are using ips in ipad and going to use it in their future macbooks -
OK why does the MSI GT780 has the 560 nvidia and alienware has the 460 ????

Gotta admit that the thought of an m11x with an even low power sandy in sounds great. The battery power would be tremendous and it would be a true step forward in mobile gaming. This is the way forward! I'd get one in a heartbeat.
However, the sandy doesn't look so snug in an m15x or even more so the m17x. You just don't buy these laptops for mobility or energy efficency,my m5x is virtually always plugged into the power cord unless it gets knocked out. They are desktop replacements. The only discussion in terms of energy here is what wattage is your PSU to shove the fattest graphics card in it you can not how much you can save. If you can afford to spend that sort of money for that sort of upgrade then that's cool but it doesn't sound tremendously worthwhile at the present. Battery power is barely a luxury for my m15x. I'm much more interested in knowing whether I can upgrade my r2's graphics card from a 5850.
With the purpose that the m15x serves at the moment I couldn't justify buying this generation, sandy sounds superb but it's not what I bought my m15x for. For smaller laptops it sounds fantastic though. I'll see what the r4 has to offer and times might have changed a little then. Maybe alienware will focus more on more portable laptops not the heavy and thick performance monsters. Or maybe technology will have advanced so much by then that smaller notebooks can really handle heavy gaming and are more worthwhile. -
How do you game in 3D anyways?...
-
I will say, I do love the addition of an HDMI-in port
-
As a gaming PC though, I think they (Dellienware) are believing that the era of the PC game machine is coming to an end somewhat; most younger folks I know seem content with moderate excellence in things, but they want variety, and this design speaks to that, and has some doodads to impress your easily impressed friends with for this years latest tech fad.
Games too are increasingly becoming console like, which is why Alienware exists in the first place, with a tendency to be more GPU bound (which is why the M11x finally came around as it is with a comparatively weak CPU vs a decent GPU).
And not the least of which, Dell is NOT going to let the XPS line die on the vine... I don't see this leaching XPS sales, rather instead leading buyers in who decide the extra bells and whistles aren't worth it and opt instead for the XPS... -
YouTube - Dell Delivers the Ultimate in Mobility, Entertainment and Gaming -
Hi all (from Ireland)…
Been waiting an age to buy my (first) M17x – was waiting patiently for the R3...
Now feeling like a rake has been dragged through my brain (though, in truth, that would likely hurt a little more).
I’m hoping that somebody may be able/willing to help in clearing up a few issues for me (genuinely wondering if I should order an R2, sharpish, before it’s too late).
If anybody could give an opinion on some or all of the following questions, it’d be much appreciated:
1. CPUs - In real (general – gaming & media-player) terms, how do you reckon the 940XM stacks up against the new ‘Sandy Bridge’ offerings?
2. Regarding GPUs, do any of the new offerings come close to the performance of the ‘Crossfire’ or ‘SLI’ options for the R2?
3. Do you view the RGBLED to WLED as a major issue (I’ve no experience of using RGBLED screens) – Is the difference immediately evident?
4. Does the FHD designation in any way compensate for this loss?
5. Please forgive my total ignorance on this one… but how significant are the 120Hz display, and P67 Express chipset specifications?
6. Do you have any reason (beyond the provided image) to suspect that the R3 will have a plastic casing?
Once again, advice greatly valued on this one. Cheers. -
I think the loss of the silver color maybe a tell on if its a plastic chassis. But the soft touch paint may be like what colorware offers as one of there options on the m15x. So still a toss up... Ahhh!!! why can't tech reporters just be clear in what their looking at!
-
Well, I guess it's going to come down to the following: who on Monday will make a purchase and be the guinea pig? I might be tempted myself, stay tuned... LOL
-
and yet to be announced Geforce GTX 560M with 1.5GB of memory -
so far today is the worst day of 2011 for me. Disappointment over dell and i got a ticket for parking my car on my OWN lawn. What a day.
-
-
And I was hoping for a m15x r3....
-
That being said the video link posted earlier states there will be two options of video card:
1. 460M
2. 6870M
They don't mention the 6970M -
Also 32 GB of ram?! Is that where our 2nd GPU use to be? very likely with no air vents on the side. True the newest GPU's slaughter PS3\360 consoles, so if you plugged in your PS3 into the R3 the avg Jo would freak out at the difference.
But its like the old saying goes if you never had ice cream you wouldn't ever know what your missing. -
