good luck hoped that helped

Guys, i just got the qoute below, but I think its still high. According to the dell rep, she informed me that the $100 coupon I see some people using recently has already expired. The price I got below was with only the EPP discount applied. I would also receive a $50 promotional coupon for the purchase.
CPU - i7 640
4 GB RAM
Bluetooth
320 GB HDD
1 Year Warranty
Price = $1097 +tax
Should I just wait for better coupons to come out?
Thanks for any feedback. Much appreciated. -
Add the $100 coupon that you can find directly on dell EPP's site (bottom left of homepage there is a coupon codes link) though you MUST be eligable for EPP to see this, I will not look it up for anyone AKA won't break rules ^_^
Once that's setup call in and they can look at your laptop and it should even around $980 before calling. Just call in and talk about what you can do to lower this price, that you don't want to play any haggling games and want to buy it now. After it's bumped down say you also would like free shipping, the code should also be at the above page -
. I am tiried of haggling..so I just caved and pushed the purchase now button!
Now I will wait to be transferred to the owners lounge.... -
I've noticed an awfully interesting trend in my dealings with the dell sales representatives: the ones with an accent that I assume are based in India offer the best discounts. I've spoken with probably 9 or 10 different reps on the phone over the past two weeks and the two that I assume are from India offered the biggest discounts, hands down. The other American reps got me to about 10-15%, the ones from India were getting me 15-2X%. Just something I thought was a bit odd, does anyone have any insight as to why this is?
-
no they are desperate for a sale at anytime so they are willing to give those discounts to make sales for the month best to call around the last two weeks of the month

About a 16.85% discount. Took me alot of haggling for several hours and disconnects. I didnt get NBD but ill call them up on Monday and let them know i need to get this in my hand by then otherwise i need to cancel. Thanks for all the help. -
good job. nice to hear you got something better than 5%
-
Great job, the NBD can't be done by the sells reps, you can just call CS right after your order is placed, and tell them you need your system asap
-
He was pressuring me to seal the deal right then.
I wondered how badly he wanted to sell me the M17X.
So I said "We can do this now if you give me NBD shipping for free."
He made me wait a few minutes, but I got it.
The Rep I spoke to was in India. I live in the USA.
Maybe that makes a difference? -

463-0742 1 Special Pricing Applied
The starting price without any discount is $2,018.00. Is it possible to get it to 1500-1600 range? Right now, the rep only lower it to 1795.87. -
You should be able to achieve at lest 15% or $300.00 off that price, just follow the directs on the first page of this tread. Just keep trying until you ge what you want within reason.
-
Thanks I will continue to try. One more question though, do you think this laptop can last 10 years for me? I mean can the components last that long?
-
You never know, I have had computers last at lest that long, but when they are that old they tend to have problems keeping up with all the new software and programs that are out.
-
Just ordered a M11x and Mini 10 and saved about $400 through EPP and got free shipping via the rep. Woohoo!
-
just keep trying UFO. Took me 5 reps and 7 hours to get what I wanted. I had to use the AAA auto insurance EPP + 3% DPA + $50 coupon. One thing i learned but could be just them lying to me is that the EPP whether it be from AAA or Microsoft will get u the same % off? I tried using an Ebay code but the prices didn't change. *shrugs*
-
Thanks for the advices guys, but I think I will hold off my purchase for a while to see if Dell ever fixes some of the problems in the M15x like the crackling sound. Also, I want to wait for the usb 3.0 too.
-
I've been an Alienware/Dell customer for over 12 years. In that time I've also built/bought computers from just about every other major manufacturer out there. This time around it was a very close call between the Asus G73JH-A1 and a M17x. The deciding factor would be the price, and whether or not I could get Dell to drop the Alienware down far enough to make the cost difference more palatable. We all know that even with aftermarket addons bumping up the price on the Asus, an Alienware would always be more.
Since this wasn't my first time buying I've searched high and low for the best price. Dell Small Business, Dell Home, DEll EPP, AAFES, you name it.
Last night I configured what I thought would be an acceptable top end model, one that I had wiggle room to come down on components. I used the EPP site, Department of Defense. Today I called when I got home from work and this is what happened....
My call was routed to an Indian call center. I was very upfront that while I was prepared to buy a machine, but it had to be something that could be competitive price wise. I listed the pros and cons for the M17x vs the G73 letting the agent know that I respected the brand, but I was prepared to jump ship. I listed off some of my more recent purchases. (Relatively speaking...one last year for my wife a year before that for myself)
I mentioned I had a pre-configured machine in my cart, which made the agent very happy. Having a machine in the cart is a MUST. It saves miscommunications and dickering that could go on point by point. HOWEVER, configure it the way you are happy with. I decked mine out with an 820 and 128gb SSD, thinking I could wiggle the SSD down to a 250gb and just replace it myself if the agent didn't budge. My agent wanted to upgrade, not downgrade. I could have maybe saved myself some hassle by slightly lowballing the machine. Bottomline: I got exactly what I asked for... your mileage WILL vary.
During the time it took him to pull up the cart I mentioned that I was worried that the 840 would replace the 820 in the lineup as soon as I ordered. He first reassured me that "I have no information that that is going to happen." Well, duh. I reiterated my concern and he assured me that if that was the case while my machine was still in production, I could call and he would "fix" it. I also mentioned multiple times that I needed the machine relatively soon for a business trip, and that if there were going to be delays (e.g. the SSD backlog they currently say they have) to let me know now and I asked about whether the second hard drive bay would come equipped with the necessary kit for self installation; he assured me it would.
Once the cart came up he "offered", since I was concerened about the 820 being updated soon, to upgrade me to the 920 for a mere $600. I actually chuckled and told him no, the reason for my call "was to make the price go down, not up". He then took a minute to review the details, asked me what I had put down for engraving, and begged permission to put me on hold for a conference with his supervisor.
Preparation helps. On my notepad in front of me I had several different configurations with costs. I prefigured MSRP, EPP, 15%, and 20% numbers for each config, so that when Dell countered I would know if they were in the pallpark percentage wise. I also had how much tax would be for each MSRP config.
When he returned to the line he said that they took into consideration my purchasing history, my pre-approval for DPA, and were prepared to make an as configured offer. My machine MSRP $3263 for $2643. Looking down I noticed that was just a hair shy of 20%, and attempted to hide my glee. I thanked him for the generous offer, and asked if he would mail the the quote so I could show my wife.
This is where the game went into full swing. The offer was exactly what I was looking for 15-20%. True the price of the SSD still gives me qualms, but oh well. BUT my hesitation made him think that I was not serious and by wanting to think about the purchase made him think he was going to lose the sale. So I made small talk.
I asked him what time it was, how long did he have in his shift, how could I be sure that he got credit for the sale IF I made a purchase, etc.
He told me that they DO NOT work on commission. They have to make a sales quota. So it is quantity of sales over quality. Sounds reasonable, I worked for telemarketing firms when I was younger and that's exactly how we were paid.
After the small talk "break" he offered me a wireless printer. I countered that I didn't need a printer and would rather have a backpack, or the cost of the printer off the machine. He said the only two things he could offer were the printer and Quicken Home and Business.
I told him I needed to go talk to my supervisor (the wife). I muted the phone, went across the house and told my wife the story, she wondered why I hadn't bought it already, and so I went back to the phone. He started the high intensity as soon as I unmuted it "very generous" "over 17%" etc etc.
I tried reattacking anything I might have missed "Does that DPA do anything for me?" to which he replied no (figured they already threw that in, but heck, had to try). After a few other tactics that got me no where, I pulled the trigger.
M17x, 820qm, 4gb RAM, 1920x1200 WUXGA, Crossfire 5870s, 128gb SSD, Home Premium, Blu-ray reader, 1yr warranty, Intel 6300 wireless
MSRP 3263 EPP 2936.70 Subtotal Offered 2643.03 Tax and Shipping: 2889.49
Total precentage off MSRP is 19%... right to the penny.
One call, total duration 47 minutes and some odd seconds.
I could have maybe lowballed the system, and let him talk me into upgrades to make him feel better. Perhaps I should have skipped the SSD (yes I'll love it once I get it, til then the cost will haunt me). But really, I don't think there was much more I could have done.
Things to look out for that if you've kept up with this thread would have already recognized:
1) the switch to x40s in the rest of Dell's lineup. I'll be watching that closely for the next month and calling the second if/when it happens.
2) I told no lies or half truths, I really do need it for a trip and I like a machine at least a month before leaving for "burn in". So in two weeks they can expect a call or three about it's shipping status.
3) I'm adding a second hard drive the moment it arrives, it had best have the rails, interface and screws
4) 4gb of RAM and $350 MORE to upgrade to 8gb??? Seriously, they might as well just rob us. Luckily theres a thing called the internet and Newegg.
5) What do I do with 2x2gb RAM and a 2yr old XPS M1730... oh yah the internet
Thats my story. Expected ship is 28 Jul. 7 days longer than some of the test units I configured. I noticed there was a "possible delay" on the 128gb SSD... I really hope not.
Good Hunting! -
Protec, nice write up
, I too wrote down the different % amounts before I talked to a rep, very good idea, always base it off the MSRP, that is a constant value.
-
Protec, well done ... I recently did the same analysis and ended up the Asus G73JH
-
Thx for the advice Protec. I will be getting my refund soon and will finally get to re-order. I didn't even think to make a phone call the first time I ordered and didn't know about the EPP, which I qualify for. I hate dickering/haggling and the way you wrote it up helps to prepare for the process.
-
Thanks for the advice!
Thanks to all for sharing your experiences.
My employer does make me eligible for EPP. I applied EPP and all coupons that the system would accept and saved a couple of configurations to my cart before I called. Having the configurations saved was a HUGE help!
The rep was very friendly and listened to my needs/wants. He proposed a number of different configurations and we haggled for quite a while before I made a decision. I had to hold to the price point you outlined as my budget is tight. I need a system that is very portable and offers excellent battery life, but also has enough overall horsepower to act as my main PC for the next 3 years - from simple stuff like managing iTunes to more demanding applications like editing video of my kids from my Sony Bloggie and allowing me to do some gaming. After a great deal of research, I honed in on the m11x as the best balance (and it looks cool too) for meeting my needs.
Some readers will groan, but given my needs and budget, I ended up going with the following: C2D SU7300, 4 GB DDR3, 250 GB 7,200 RPM, Bluetooth and the 3 year Advanced Plan. I have had some bad luck with some computers in the past so am a big believer in extended warranties. This is replacing my use of a Toshiba with a T1350 and integrated graphics, so even the C2D (paired with the GT 335M) will warp me into another performance universe and allow me to break free of my PS3 console for gaming.
Thanks for all the posted advice.
Incidentally, it was all the new R2 owners' posts regarding the general lack of visibly improved real life performance, the Optimus issues and the shorter (non-gaming) battery life that pushed me away from the i7 as it awaits BIOS updates. -
Hey guys, just wanted to send out a thanks for all the valuable information that this thread offers. After looking around alot I finally decided on getting the M17x, with the information from this thread of course.

awesome discount bro and congratz on the purchase enjoy
-
@BatBoy Thanks for the info on contacting a U.S. Rep, I added it to the OP. I'd rep you but I must spread the wealth apparently. -
Hey have you guys ever managed to get a sales person on the phone give you an option that's not in the customisation options on the website?
I ask because I'm after a Studio XPS 16 and it's over budget and I can't get anyone (in Australia) to do better than 10%. The best way to get under budget and not feel like I'm sacrificing something I really want is to ask them to add a 128GB SSD instead of the 256GB SSD (vs 500GB 7200rpm or 640GB 5400rpm HDD). The 128GB is available on a lower spec XPS 16 (a 1640) but not on the high spec 1645 I'm after.
Any ideas? -
Hey,
I'm about to call up AW to haggle them down on prices. Do they get commission off the EPP site too?
Because if they don't... I'm probably not going to get any more discounts.. lol. -
o they all get commission for sales.
-
With all the success stories, it seems like %20 off retail is the norm for phone pricing on their products. Let's see if anyone can get %25-30.
-
i did that on my m11x i7 from dell using Boeing epp discount, $100 off, Free ship and dpa discount along. i think i got the laptop for around 38% off. I just picked up a m15x from outlet using discount and cashback with 128gb ssd and 6gb ram with i7 720qm 1080p led lcd for like $1300 OTD w tax and free ship
-
I don't know if this was brought up earlier in this thread, but I'm not getting the 50 dollar coupon for subscribing to their e-mail list.
-
Is the EPP discount the same for every company you work for or does it vary?
-
From what I have seen EPP discounts have been 10% with a few being 15% like Boeing.
-
I've read a few posts here saying people have been able to get NBD. Is that the day after ordering or the day after the notebook is assembled (actual next day vs. a waiting period)?
-
NBD is the day after the item is ready to ship.
-
-

Calling dell now I need to buy 20 M11x's for contests for my company.
*EDIT*I'll tell you what, if I get connected to India one more time I'll just go buy Apple macbooks. They dont know how to use a simple switchboard to get me to sales. I was transferred 7 times and than hung up on by "Joe".
EDIT
11 transfers now. I have been to Manila, India, Philippines, Guatemala, I have not been to America once. This is disgusting. -
