Hey Guys, need to order another m18x. Anyone got any coupon info currently ?

And yes, I am well aware of the ability to negotiate for discounts via the save $$$ ordering thread. I am quite good at it actually. But if there is a 20% kickin around, I would jump on it.

    Thanks all.

There should some coming up soon or atleast by 8AM CST. No guarantees though that it would be for Alienware or for all dell outlet home PC/laptops or for select systems.

Nope ... 6990s again :) No point I can see in the 580s especially with my experience with the 6990s.

    Have another go mate.... :)

EDIT: Although it works on the UK Dell site, it doesnt seem to work on the US site unfortunately......sorry mate.

well, i got it down to about 3,300.00

but then AAFES droped their price down to 3k for it, but im stuck because i cannot order yet because they made a mistake with it.

basically if you try to order the specs of the one i want, you get an error (because of the video card) that says this:

anyone mind calling that has options about this and figuring out when they are going to fix it? ima call tonight when i get the chance.

Is that just your aafes discount only, or did they give you other discounts? Did it work, saying - "i only have $3100" or did they say - "best we can do is $3300"

AAFES doesnt directly service with dell, thats the problem. Since im in the military, i have access to it which allows me to get things much cheaper as well as not have to pay taxes for it.

So, you cant talk to dell, and ask for an "AAFES" discount, because AAFES has their own website. but i got a military and student discount from dell, and i said "i only have 3,100.00" and they replied with "the best we can do is 3,300.00"

AAFES usually gets really good discounts, the base config price in AAFES on an m18x is 1689.00$ right now, so im getting about 700$ off not including taxes. I just need them to order it without running into stupid errors on the order site.

This is what I just ordered.
    Starting Price $3,840.99
EPP Discount $265.95 <<< The only discount website allows
Subtotal $3,575.04 <<< My haggle start price

After haggling and a lot of back forth, plus let me speak to my supervisor several times. I was only able to get a little more than epp discount. So I agreed to sign up for their credit program to lower the price. Got a little better deal with that. Total for around $350 in savings, but I've read on this thread alot better deals.
So I asked her if they were still running the summer 25% off discount program. She said she wasn't sure and asked me to give her the code I was entering from Verizon's epp program so she could enter it herself. I don't know if the code some how showed her a bigger discount than it did for me on website or if she wanted the sale and was tired of me or if the summer 25% off is indeed still runnnig, but she said it worked for 25% off. Wholly sh*t great !!!! :D Plus I couldn't resist throwing in the - "its a birthday gift" - boom got the next day shipping too. :)

    Re-cap
    Retail $3,840.99
EPP Discount $265.95 <<< The only discount website allows
    Subtotal $3,575.04

Final price including tax negotiated with Rep
    $3100
Im a happy camper. Big thanks to DR650SE for posting this howto.

Hi there, I was trying to build some systems on Alienware website, I'm thinking about buy one either M17x or M18X. While building the system, I found out the same price between the M17x and M18x (for $2699), and I only can afford about that price, so I have some questions.

    Here are the systems :

    M17x : i7 2860QM 2.5GHz / 8GB 1600MHz / GTX 580M

    M18X : i7 2670QM 2.2GHz / 8GB 1600MHz / GTX 560M – NVIDIA SLI

    1. For m17x users with 580M with 2670QM, how BF3 run in that machine ? pls be specific : resolution setting and frame.

    2. How about with 2860QM, will the machine run better in BF3 ? Is the different between 2670QM and 2860QM big ?

    3. Is 560M SLI > GTX 580M ?

    4. Overrall, which one is better ?

    5. Someone who can build a equal or better system with cheaper price pls tell me.

Funny... the GTX580m is 384 shader, while GTX560m is 192 shader each. Of course, that's not the only metric of performance, but in the simplest terms, they should perform rather equally. That, and the m17xR3 can be configged with Optimus, for very decent battery power savings :) (the m18x can disable the GPU in BIOS, not as convinient as Optimus, but still an option).

Def go for the m17x, single gpu is more reliable and supported more so than dual gpu and als you get a better cpu which is great. also with the m17x you will no doubt run on high in bf3 with good fps. probably not so much ultra.

also save yourself 600 dollars or whatever it is and get the 6990m in the m17x. I played with a single 6990m in the bf3 beta on max settings in 1920x1080 (granted max on beta is high on retail) and i was getting no lag whatsoever

In all honesty those 2 systems would have VERY similar performance. You might consider size and weight as a deciding factor - and cut out the upgraded hard drives/ram. You can purchase those parts from newegg for less than half what Dellienware will charge you. Both computers hold 2 hard drives. Only the M18x has an option for SLI/CrossfireX. Only the M17x has a 3d screen.

    M18x = 18.4" screen, Dimensions: (W)17.17" (D)12.68" (H)2.09", 11.93 lbs starting weight, anodized aluminum lid, 12 cell battery

    M17x = 17.3" screen, Dimensions: (W)16.14" (D)11.96" (H)1.77", 9.39lbs starting weight, soft touch lid, 9 cell battery

Whatever your choice - enjoy it.

If you want to save money, get the M17x R3 when they show up in the outlet with the 6970M/6990M. You will spend a LOT less.

I would suggest getting the M18x in the outlet as well, but those tend to go away rather quickly and are harder to get.

Either way the CPU won't change gaming performance much if at all. You could get the 2630QM and it would still be fantastic, just about the same as the 2670QM, 2720QM, 2760QM, 2860QM, etc. Of course if you can get a faster CPU for the same money, all the better.

560M SLi is about the same as a single 580M. A 6990M is about the same as a 580M as well.

I'd say a M17x with a 6970M/6990M will give the best bang for the buck, at least in terms of retail or outlet prices. You may find a good deal on another config or even an M18x, if you can wait until then.

Is that good ? Does 4gb Ram matter ?

    HyperX 8gb DDR3 1866

    HyperX 8gb DDR3 1600

4GB is plenty, but if you want more, or need faster ram, try those out. Compare the prices to what dell would charge you. It takes 4 screws to access your 2 primary memory dimms. Save some money and get some nicer ram with heatsinks.

although... why did you go with 16 gigs of ram? they totally overprice it. its better to buy aftermarket and upgrade yourself. but, thats just my 2c, good job though!

If stock is 1600 you should be ok.

If you have money to burn get the 2133 not sure if they are available yet.

1600 is good enough, you wont be gaming on the IGP anyway.

Don't get the 2860QM, it makes very little difference over the 2760QM, and in most games it makes literally zero difference.

the 8mb cache is really nice though, and most games that are coming out are becoming more CPU hungry, especially the new sins of a solar empire.

I don't know about that... Get the best you can afford, there are more and more games that are CPU intensive....

I would really recommend getting the m18x with taking as little as you have to in order to go with the crossfire 6990m. With the leftover money, if it were me, I'd also recommend using the leftover few $ to get the 2760. The idea is to put your $ into the things that are the most difficult to upgrade and not over pay for easier things to upgrade like memory and hard drive. Even 4GB would be serviceable and perfectly fine to use.... put your dollars towards a video card! I can't stress enough how much more performance you'll get with crossfire 6990m's and the rest at the minimum instead of spreading your budget around between hard drive, processor, memory, and a mid-range video card.

Both systems in the first post are not good choices if the budget is 2699.

Why not get the Base CPU, RAM and HDD and get the 6990M crossfire and pay $ 2499 pre-taxes? Plus you call to order and play nice you could save even more.

Adding another 8GB of RAM is pretty cheap 44-67 USD at best depending on speed of the RAM in question. You could do this on your own.

Paying 2699 for any M17X R3 is a waste of money.

again if you are getting these from an actual review, they do the equivalent of judging a book by its cover. you cannot just look at the difference in ghz and call it a day. the 8mb is a 33% increase from the 6. Now the "numbers" sound good right? i would actually reccomend to read a review about both of these side by side to get an idea of how much of a difference they really make.

I thought the same until alot of people started to notice a difference in BF3 atleast when it came to switching processors, and thats when i started to read more about processors and found out alot.

But i digress, since i feel this is getting off-topic.

I would say go for the 6990 crossfire, and if you have money left over, upgrade the processor. Yes, more games are starting to be more processor intensive, but most games today already are GPU intensive, and only going to get more so. The processor is also a little easier to upgrade if necessary, and much easier to get, often for cheaper than Dell, on ebay, than the GPUs will be. I believe some people were finding ES versions of the 2920s for like $300 or so and they performed as well as the retail versions.

Ram you won't need to worry about immediately, and harddrives get cheaper every day, especially if you don't buy it from Dell.

Unless you have a reason for choosing nvidia (3D or CUDA or something) then get the 6990s in CF for about the same price as a single 580m.

Lets not talk about spec ,

If you think m18x's size/weight doesn't matter for you then go for m18x seriously m18x's (hardware) aluminium and macro key (if non target mmorpg , you can use it as bot) is really awesome compare to m17x-R3. I'm also agree with what Pion2099 mentioned.
