Hi - I'm really interested in upgrading my current notebook to an Alienware M17x R5 once they come out - can anyone provide me with tips on good ways to haggle down the price? I'm a Canadian resident so I'm not sure who to contact about sales quotes and such, coupled with the fact that I've never really haggled the price of any of my purchases down before, so I have trouble thinking of what to say or do once I'm talking to them.

If anyone can povide me with tips and/or the proper contact information for my situation that would be good. Would those NBR Alienware Sales Assistants mentioned before be able to help me, knowing my location and such?

On Dell UK, m18x r2 is £400 off now and the m17xR4 is £200 off making them a base price @ £1299/£1099
Which is pretty damn good, now to wait or buy now :(

Hey guys, I am looking into ordering a new M14x, is the best way to try and get any deal at all by calling them and going over the phone as opposed to online? Alsowould it be wrong, or even possible to order it under my brothers name or something since he is younger than me and still a student to try and get an additional discount? If not what would my best option be for trying to get some sort of deal on it.

I highly suggest ordering over the phone. I was able to get 14% off my rig. II told them i was a student and got a dell $200 promo card. So, its definitely worth mentioning that you go to school or you can say its for your brother and he goes to school.

Just spoke with a rep on ordering a new M18, and he recommended that I wait until Thursday to order as there will be a sale with something between $100-$200 off. Anyone else heard the same or something similar? He offered to call back on Thursday and process my order with the savings, just not sure how big a grain of salt I should take that with.

You had better luck then me. First one I chatted with quoted me right off the website. The second one was also right off the website but did mention that I would get a $200 GC after I received the laptop. Neither of them added the $100 coupon that's going around. The second one was leaving for the day so I had him just email the quote to me. I may just replay back and said price is ok but I want the 780 for that and see what he says.

I've had better luck on the Dell online chat over calling the sales department. Over the chat, I had to go through almost 10 agents for one to finally give me a discount. He offered me a $100 coupon that he applied to my configuration. I got the $1999 Alienware 17 with 780M gpu. Total price on the site came out to $2199. After the $100 coupon, and a 2% EPP discount, the subtotal was $2013. I also signed up for the Dell Advantage program(very easy to do) and I should be getting a 5% rebate card. So that makes it $186 off the system and a $100 rebate card. I also got free 2nd business day shipping. For some reason the agent told me that the $100 coupon or the Dell Advantage benefits cannot be combined with the $200 student eGift card which I qualified for. So I decided to drop the student card. If you want my chat agent's contact info, please PM me.

Extra $200 for all the taxes

Could anyone that has had great success write up some sort of guide for what to do in a call? Like what points should i bring up and perhaps at what stage of the conversation? Never haggled in my life so I'm pretty unsure as to how to successfully haggle.

My situation is that I'm trying to purchase an Alienware 18 with 4800mq, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd + 750gb HDD, and dual gtx 780m. This configuration costs $3,649 but my budget is strictly $3,100. Is there any hope with haggling to reach my budget or even lower? I'm willing to use every trick in the book including the DPA (even doing it for real). I'm also a university student so I'm hoping that can help me out.

So far the only things I can think of bringing up with the service representative is:
    • Student discount
    • Member discount
    • Dell advantage
    • Dell Preferred Account

Is there anything I'm missing? If I use those on top of haggling, do you think I could reach my goal? Perhaps someone knows of a good CSR that I could use? Thanks

I tried and failed a couple of times in chat tonight. The system I want is a 14 which I've configured to subtotal $1549. I was hoping for something like $100 or ~6.5% off but only got offered downgraded specs and financing options, instead. One guy did offer a 2% employee discount, but I didn't take it since I thought I could work it lower on someone else. But, I didn't. Both salesmen were willing to let me go without making a deal even though I had told them I was considering a $1299 MSI GE60 with the same specs minus Blu-ray. Which was a bluff. I want the Alienware.

That's all right, though. I'm really not comfortable haggling, anyway. I mean, I have no issues with getting a lower price if it's offered or simply asking if there's anything they can do for me. But bluffing and pretending that I'm not willing to pay a certain price when I actually am...distorting the truth, in other words...Call me a wuss, but I just don't like it and don't think I'll be trying again.

Well, I didn't try another haggling attempt, but I did end up getting that $100 off my Alienware 14 configuration. I found a coupon code on retailmenot.com after searching for Alienware. I won't copy the code here in case it's against the rules, but it's currently the top "staff pick." $100 off an Alienware system priced at $999.99 or more, expires September 5. Trying to apply the code at checkout didn't work, but the error code wasn't specific, so I chatted in to give them the code and see if they could apply it. They did and even upgraded me to 2nd day shipping. So, my subtotal went from $1549 to $1449. Yay. And, as far as I know, there is nothing unscrupulous about it. Just thought I would let everybody know that that's how I saved $100 in case anyone else wants to try it.

I'll say it one more time...

If you call into the sales line at Dell and get some random rep, they are severely limited by how much they can discount you. It'll usually be a few percent, or like 50 bucks off.

You *need* to be referred to a salesperson that you call directly. When you are a referral sale, they are allowed to discount up to 30% and more. That's where the actual "haggling" goes on.

All this information was told to me by an actual Dell rep. Word for word.

If anyone knows any of these kind salespersons that is able to give up to 30%, let me know. Id appriciate it.

    Thanks

Lol you and me brother, you and me. I tried that before too, to mention that you could get a MSI with 780M for $1990, but was shot down by some indian dude who claimed the new Alienwares had the new and superpowerful network card while the one in the GT70 was ancient and old. He really liked to brag about the network card.

So after trying to mention Raid0 with 3msata ssds, mechanical steelseries keyboard etc and it still didnt work, I gave up althogether trying to make a deal with these indian dudes. Tough guys lol

Probably some hidden treasure that is super secret that nobody cant share. If they name this guy, his identity will be revealed, sales will go up once more people call, and his boss will find out and kick him out on the street.

Its probably a tough world for these sales guys :D

I think like any sales job, haggling with the Dell sales rep means simply hitting as many reps as you can. It's almost a game of numbers. A lot of times, a rep will just give you a great deal for very little work. Sometimes, you can spend all the time in the world and he won't do crap. That's what I've noticed at least...

30% coupons are extremely rare, but another thing to ask about is whether there are any corporate discounts. I purchased the M14x in my sig for close to 30% off since I had insurance with a certain company which was having a promotion (I think it was 25% off) and was able to get a little more.

After the last 10-20-30 sale, I wouldn't expect another one till the holiday season. Back to school is over with school starting today at many places as well.

Haggling is pretty tiring and takes a long time. I recommend just signing up for as many email accounts as you can and waiting for the next batch of coupons.

If you'll looking to get the 780m in the M18, the delivery date is a ways out too so it might make sense to wait a bit.

When you guys say that haggling sometimes take a long time, how does that work? Because in my experience, after asking for a discount in a couple of different ways, that's it. You either get it or don't. I never got the impression that just by continuing the conversation things could change. I understand there are many factors (coupons, promos, shipping costs, etc.) at work, but when you hit a brick wall how do you keep 'fighting' for that discount?

Unless you all refer to the process of talking to different reps, as joecait mentions just above. In that case yes, I see how time-consuming the random calls can be.

What I've seen (not my own experience), is that someone would say they need it at this price and the rep gets a certain price, but not what the customer wants. They hang up...

Later, the dell rep calls back and says he can do this now. The customer thinks about it and asks for a bit more...The dell rep asks his "manager" and says, ok we can do it now.

This is assuming the rep actually wants the sale. Some reps don't care really...and don't call back. I've seen this example a few times posted here. I don't know how Dell reps are compensated and it may have changed...

AAEFS (sp?) Military discount is also pretty large so worth trying as well and probably the go to if you want a decent discount without haggling.

Calling multiple reps seems to be the default as you can read in this thread for people to just hang up and try again. Usually though, with all the wait times, back and forth, manager discussions, etc...and each rep configuring a machine, you'll looking at like 30- 1 hr plus for a quote. Quite a pain.

One reason I actually hate calling since I know it's 1 hour+ out of my already busy day...and why I ordered this time around since the discount was good and I don't have to waste as much time.

I see, thanks. I don't think the "waiting for them to call you back and meet your price" thing could work where I am, so that's what I was missing. Though surely a rep who gives you a discount, watches you walk away, goes to his manager, gets a bigger discount, calls you back just to hear you ask for an even bigger discount would just tell you to f**** off :D

Never ask for a discount. When I bought my M17x R3 I said something like this:

"Hey, I'm looking at either an Alienware or an Origin PC today and I'm hoping to go with Alienware... My budget is 2000 dollars."

I showed him my M17x that I had built in the Dell shopping card with a 2800 price tag.

We talked a little bit, he said "Let me talk with my manager" and I waited on hold for about 15 minutes.

He came back and said "My manager says I can do 2080 for that laptop. Including tax."

I bought it on the spot. That's how it went down for me.

I really need help in getting these amazing discounts that people are talking about. lol
I have spoken with 5 dell reps, 3 on phone and 2 in chat, and I have't gotten more than $150 off of the alienware 18 I was trying to purchase. So if anyone can help/teach me these haggling ways please do. My college starts in a couple days and I know I won't get a laptop that soon, but I am hoping to get one in mid sept.
    any help would be appreciated

Lastly, Dell employees and managers read many of these forums so for all we know, they really don't "need" to sell more M18s if the backlog or launch was a huge success. They have already put a stop to all people calling in and getting custom configs with the 780ms with lower cpu/memory/ssd specs and reading these forums, they may like/dislike things that people have tried in the past.

In summary, the key thing to remember is that there isn't a set way to get a deal. It really depends on what's "allowable" by Dell, the rep you speak with, how much they want to hit their quarterly/yearly/numbers, etc...Sorta like when Logitech had that 50% off anything in their store sale. I haven't seen many discounts as good lately.

Also, one thing that will work for you may not work for the next guy since you're dealing with different people. I flat out asked "if they can do more" when I bought the M14x in my sig. The guy ran some numbers and checked and got a slightly similar price for more stuff included.

I really think now is a bad time to try to get a deal. (For people wondering, I feel it's a bad time because they just HAD a big sale with 10-20-30 percent off coupons. There are a stack of M18 orders with 780ms pending. Back to school is over, people who need laptops have no choice since a lot of their competitors are done with their sales as well)...

As I keep saying, you just monitor this forum or slickdeals and sign up for all the dell marketing emails and sit and wait...Patience will be rewarded in this case.

You have money in your pocket. Dell wants that money. Try to be patient and score the best deal you can...and typically, you don't even have to wait that long as there's almost always some sale each month/quarter.

Hi guys I'm new to the forum. My friend and I are looking to buy the AW18 preferably with the 780M SLI. I've been trying to chat with different reps from Dell but no luck in getting the option to upgrade to 780M SLI unless I take the $5199 starting point which is way over my budget... Anyone had any luck getting the 780M in the lower starting point? If it's also possible anyone can refer me to any good Dell rep to get the best price and the options I want?
