    Since quite some people are having problems with the plugin I'm going to make some kind of FAQ to help with the issues. I will also link this in the first post to make it easier to find.

    Troubleshooting:

    Q: When I start the plugin it displays the error message "No AlienFX device found"

    A: Your laptop is not supported by the default installtion of the plugin. It is however possible to make it work using the "alienfx_vis_devices.xml" file.
    Search this thread. Quite some people have uploaded their device xml files and might have already created a devices xml that will fit your laptop.
    If you don't find a devices xml file that fits your laptop you can create one yourself following this guide: Creating a device xml

    If you have a "alienfx_vis-devices.xml" place it inside your C:\Users\<Your Username>\appdata\Roaming\Winamp\Plugins directory.

    Q: When using the plugin it freezes every now and then. How can this be fixed?
    A:This can happen if to many zones are configured and / or the type of music you are playing has too many beats. This can be fixed by adding the following line to the alienfx_vis_config.xml.
    HTML:
    <maxupdaterate value="20.0" />
    Add it directly below the "delay" tag so it looks like this:
    HTML:
    <?xml version="1.0" ?>
    <config>
        <!-- How much delayed the beat displaying is. If it blinks to late increase this value, if it blinks to early decrease it. -->
        <!-- this value has to be >= 0 !! -->
        <delay value="0" />
        <!-- how often commands will be send to the AlienFX device -->
        <maxupdaterate value="20.0" />
        <!-- below are all saved values from the sliders -->
        <energy>
    The value of "maxupdaterate" has to be between 1 and 25. The default value is 25. (The maximum is 25 because with higher values you could deadlock your AlienFX device) The value defines how many times per second the plugin checks for beats and sends it to the device. That means if you lower that value, less commands will be send to the AlienFX device and it will be less likely to freeze, but it will also react slower to beats. The "alienfx_vis_config.xml" file can be found in your C:\Users\<Your Username>\appdata\Roaming\Winamp\Plugins directory

    Q: I used the plugin and my AlienFX does not work at all anymore. What can I do?

    A: Try reseting your AlienFX using the Command Center. If that does not work try rebooting your laptop. If that still does not work, shut your laptop down. Remove the power supply and the battery from the laptop and wait 5 minutes. Without power the AlienFX device will do a complete reset and should be back to normal if you boot your laptop again.

But i have a m17x r4 laptop that i am trying to get the keyboard to blink so i put the files in the right place according to this tutorial i watched on youtube but i used Kross7 file and changed the end to xml. I now get an error message that says "coundn't find main node 'config' " i dont know what this means for what i did wrong so any help would be great :)

    You'll find me on page 6 at the bottom. I never got around to using this project but I'll contribute to the old m17x R1 users.

    If you are still around I have the plugin for our computer with the setting file to get your "light show" working.

    Again this is for the m17x R1. Not sure if it will work for the others. Setup worked amazing for me.

    Hi all, after searching everywhere in that looooong post, I finally managed to find one almost working config file for the M17X R4... only problem was the middle left part of the keyboard not correctly assigned... as I saw that the keyboard was recognized as M17X R3 I thought that using a config file coming from that model would work but I did not find it .... so I tweaked the value corresponding to the zone not working and guess what ? It works !
    So I'm uploading here the files for you guys as I think it's going to help many people ! =)
    Remember it's for Winamp only. It is for m17x r4 (maybe r3 ... I don't know, you'll have to check it out).

    this files are to be placed in :

    C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Winamp\Plugins

    I advise you to follow this guide and replace (once everything installed) the files needed by mine ;)

    Alienware AlienFX Winamp Plugin Tutorial | AnthonyDamasco.net

    (update: sorry I reuploaded as I forgot to reapply the value to enable the alienware logo to work :rolleyes:)

    Guys, I'm uploading a video to show you all the result :D

    If you dont have Winamp installed, you think it would be built-in with your Windows? Of course you need to install Winamp to get the (compatible) plugin to work. Once you got Winamp installed, simply place the plugin inside your C:/user/[username]/AppData/Roaming/Winamp/Plugin folder, you'll have to enable the "show hidden file" to see the AppData folder.

    I have a m14x R1. I got the files to work, the FX work slightly while winamp is playing music and viz. only problem - only 2-4 lights are going on.

    the devices file is set up properly, i got the same values as others in here with an R2 got. I pasted in kirtangl's settings file and then the fx plug in started to work in winamp (was getting no fx device found prior to that)

    now my question is (and im sorry, my eyes are tired from reading too much)

    how to I get the rest of the lights to come on? what are the number values I want to edit?

    thanks

    Does anyone have a sample MP3 with all the frequency ranges starting from low to high so we can use it to calibrate the light settings?

    Nevermind, I made one. But I can't upload it because it's 1.7mb

    I'm not sure if this thread is dead or not, but I'm trying to get this to work with virtual DJ. I see a few people posted the same thing but responses were just shoved off to the side. I searched around and saw that skillz1333 said

    .

    But when I lurk around some more I find no information or instructions on how to get it to work with virtual dj. If anyone could help or comment that would be great.

    Hi I just got my Alienware 17X R4 on tuesday and have been looking around trying to get the lightfx working with winamp. I've tried a few different ways but I just dont have the right experience to set the files up to fit my system. I know where to place them and everything I just dont know how to properly modify them. If someone could send me the already modified files it would help me out alot.

    Hi guys.

    I'm using an Alienware M17X R4 with the latest Winamp.

    I've been trying to get this to work, and i get the two different errors when clicking 'Start plugin'.
    Errors I'm recieving is the "Alienware Device"- and "AlienFX Device not found".
    So I've been searching through the pages here on this forum, trying to use some different alienfx_vis_config files, without any luck so far.
    - Perhaps I'm doing it all wrong.

    Anyone who found a solution to this or know what I have to do?

    Thanks in advance.

    Cool config. Enjoy it. For my M17x R4 though I noticed that the left and right zones were assigned the opposite LED. Not sure if this was a mistake or just a mis-label... i.e. I don't know if the led zone was actually meant for the left or right side.

    For those that want/need it here is my alienfx_vis_devices.xml file for my M17x R4.

    It's working now, but its basically just the number pad thats doing any lightning, only the rest of the keyboard is doing some a very few times.
    May be due to that i play metal with it, not sure.

    Working perfect with latest Winamp, Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, on an M17x R1 with CFX 5870 and QX9300.

    Just need to get my hands on a decent config, since I followed the sliders in the read me and it isn't too pretty with the music I listen to.

    That said, I never had to press Alt+K, I just went into the plugin settings and clicked configure. Was all self explanatory.

    Great plugin, thanks!

    hi guys.

    I use a Alienware M17xR3 and brought it around May 2012 with Windows 7.

    I downloaded winamp yesterday and tried to install it, however, when I go to visualisation and then select plug-in, it displays "Alienware Device not found. Plugin not active!"

    However,

    I have put it in the right folders

    libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll is in C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp

    vis_winamp-alienfx-plugin is in C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp\Plugins

    and alienfx_vis_config is in C:\Users\william\AppData\Roaming\Winamp\Plugins

    help please, thanks

    THANK you so much. I got winamp installed, and the fx working within 15 minutes thanks to you!

    Your config is also great! Cheers :D

    This should really come pre-installed somehow was part of Alien FX though, and if it worked with SongBird, or Itunes it would be even better. WinAmp is okay I guess :p

    How did you get it to work? I followed the readme (since Mediamonkey's folder setup is identical to Winamp's) put the 3 xmls in the appdata folder, and the other 2 dll files in the Mediamonkey installed folder. Whenever I open Mediamonkey and go to options and go to visualizations, it displays: "couldn't open 'alienfx_vis_config.xml' C:\Users\David\\AppData\Roaming\Winamp\Plugins\alienfx_vis_config.xml and the following error pops up when I try to start the plugin: "No AlienFX device found. Plugin will not work".

    I have a M14XR2, Windows 8, and am running MediaMonkey, but what Metacore mentioned too, MediaMonkey is compatible with Winamp plugins.

    Got this working with my Alienware 17, it's pretty cool.

    alienfx_vis_devices.xml

    PHP:
    <?xml version="1.0" ?>
    <devices>
      <device name="Alienware 17" protocolVersion="2" productid='0x524'>
        <led name="Left keyboard" code="0x1" />
        <led name="Middle keyboard" code="0x2" />
        <led name="Right keyboard" code="0x4" />
        <led name="Num pad" code="0x8" />
        <led name="Left strip" code="0x20" />
        <led name="Right strip" code="0x40" />
        <led name="Head" code="0x80" />
        <led name="Logo" code="0x100" />
        <led name="Touchpad" code="0x200" />
        <led name="Wifi" code="0x800" />
      </device>
    </devices>

    this looks to be the same as my alienware 14 post, except I have more zones iterated, and the product number for the 14 is 0x525 instead of 0x524.

    from my code:

    PHP:
    <?xml version="1.0" ?>
    <devices>
      <device name="Alienware 14" protocolVersion="2" productid='0x525'>
        <led name="left key" code="0x000001" />
        <led name="left center" code="0x000002" />
        <led name="right center" code="0x000004" />
        <led name="right key" code="0x000008" />
        <led name="left strip" code="0x000020" />
        <led name="right strip" code="0x000040" />
        <led name="back panel" code="0x000080" />
        <led name="logo" code="0x000100" />
        <led name="touch pad" code="0x000200" />
        <led name="wifi light" code="0x000800" />
        <led name="power button" code="0x002000" />
        <led name="HDD activity light" code="0x004000" />
      </device>
    </devices>

    I must've missed the power button and some of the HDD lights and such, I wasn't paying much attention to those specifically.
