I also called AW the other day about the GPU being upgradable, if to say they bust out with 4870 x2 crossfire x, and the dude told me yes it will be. now to wait it out. i originaly almost ordered an m17x at first because what i've read everywhere was that 9800m gt sli x2 outperforms 3870 crossfire x x2, but i bit the bullet because of obvious reasons with the quad processor and 1066 ddr3 ram.

Yeah, you went big with that. I'd dump the extra software and accessories, and buy the 3-year warranty. Unless money is no object, and then just add the 3-year. It's critical to have it, trust me on this.

I have the same setup minus the 250's in raid and the tuner and extras. Should be here in a couple days.

    Hi guys

I am about to order M17 and just wanted to ask a few things...

    1) Do they ship it with full Vista DVD?
    2) I always used to install clean system on a new rig straight from the box. Is there anything I should know before I do that? Is this alienware software (OSD, Command Center) really necessary?
    3) Do I have to somehow turn the Crossfire on, after format?

    Cheers

    No full vista dvd.

You don't need to clean install the system with AW, it is clean.
I ALWAYS clean install other systems.

Install driver would turn CF on in game.

    Thanks for quick reply.

Great to hear that they ship rigs without any bloatware.

But is there any way to do fresh reinstall of the whole system? I do it every half year or so, coz I like when it's all clean and tidy.

    Cheers

As I mentioned everyday to NBR member, image the partition before doing anything else would save you hrs/days later.
I like fresh windows every 2 months or so.
Restore image to fresh only takes 10 minutes.

It's restoring the system back to the state when you imaged it.
Whatever your system looked like back then is restored.

Hoosier, I would completely ignore that phase system BS. I know it's hard, but all it will do is cause you heartache. You're already out of the early phases where a payment problem might occur, so it's best to just wait for the FedEx email saying your rig has shipped. I know that's not what you wanted to hear.

You better get in touch with Fed Ex now and tell them exactly what you want to do. Also if you are tracking the shipment it will tell you the next destination for it.

BTW if you do not contact FedEx that you are not going to be home for a week, after x amounts of attempts to deliver they send it back.

Without the "x"... maybe because it's not supposed to be OCed . Very interesting if other people with the same processor get "q9300" . Might be a way to proof the fact that alienware has an eye on people OCing their pcs and removing the warranty...

that still doesn't take away from the fact that the dude PAID for a QX9300 and the idiots who put the laptop together snuck in a Q9300 (non extreme). thats just shady as hell.

anyone know if you can upgrade to 8GB? i was reading somewhere 64bit vista is capable of greater than 4gb. is it the motherboard thats restricting the max ram? i've been looking around and i see that 2gb sticks for the 1066 ddr3 is all they got out for now but in the future i'm sure they'll bust out with 4gb sticks.

Yours is a mobile quad extreme, like mine. The lack of an X in the identifier suggests it would be a desktop quad, however, checking the specs on the Q9300 shows that it has only 6MB of L2 cache and a maximum multplier of 7.5. If you check CPU-Z you'll notice yours shows 2x6144 of L2 cache and a 9.5 multplier. And it lists the CPU as an extreme model by name.

So I figure the apps are basically not distingushing between the mobile and desktop quads. The finer details suggest no mistake was made in your order though.

EDIT: Actually CPU-Z reports my quad as being both a "Core 2 Quad T9400" and a Q9300, both clearly wrong. If I'm not mistaken, the T9400 is a dual core, no?

Well guys my M17 arrived yesterday :D and i am VERY VERY impressed, the build quality is fantastic, it feels very sturdy and expensive, which i expected. Havent had a single problem yet and the whole process went very well. It was meant to ship on the 30th of december but i got it on the 19th. I was stuck in phase 3 waiting for parts so i just left it and then all of a sudden i got an email from DHL telling me it had shipped. Great surprise especially at this time of year. My 3d Mark score is just over 14,000. Plays all my games perfectly at 1980x1200, Call of duty 4, World at War, CS:S, Left 4 Dead and many more.

Overall i couldnt be more pleased with the setup, my only issues is that when u run it off the battery the games dont perform as well as they do when plugged into the mains, but since i wont be running it off the battery for games, this isnt really an issue. :D :D :D :D

in the catayst theres a power option to max proformance for the gpus on battery

i too am inpressed, cant believe DHL couldnt be bothered to deliver mine :( but that aside its very nice, whats your setup? if you got 400-500 marks more you must have the 2.8core2 and the 2gbs of ram

I went for the Quad Extreme QX9300, ATi Crossfire, 320gb hdd, 2gb DDR3(I intend to upgrade after xmas), 1920x1200 disp, illuminated keyboard.

I was happy with waiting but it was a really nice surprise :) hopefully be able to tweak it a little and get a higher score. And buy the matching blue led mouse from razor :D Also adding a 500gb drive to it this week, purely for storage, mainly using it for university type stuff.

Dude, your setup is IDENTICAL to mine, right down to the blue Razer mouse. Have you been reading one of my previous posts? :)

The mouse will match perfectly, as it also has the same velvety matte feeling as the laptop.

    my new m17 is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, saturday, but i'm leaving town tonight for a week. now i have to wait an extra week to see this thing. i paid for it on the first of december and dont get to touch it til the end of the month? thats a terrible deal...by the time i get it it'll be outdated. AW needs to find a way to do things a little faster than the way they do it. i'm very very sad right now... ; ;
