@fusion. Since you're a computer scientist you should be telling ME about RAM. Also, which be better with my RAM, Norton or McAfee to protect me from *cough* viruses.

 

Indeed, they do seem to give Dell good reviews and their AWs reviews do at times seem to be less then favorable. They don't even review Sagers, and the only reason they reviewed the OCZ is because it's a AW.

It's not all their fault thou. They can only review what AW sends them but they shouldn't have compared it to the m17x at $6000. They should've stuck with NBs with similar configs. And if AW sends them a more powerful unit later, then redo the review.

Let's hope AW sends Chaz a more powerful machine and a whole lot faster.

Hmm. I wasn't too concerned at first, but after reading some of the comments in here I began to wonder:

I'd post my specs, but I think I'd normally copy and paste them from the confirmation email... that I have yet to receive. I checked my online bank account, and it seems Alienware has already received full payment for the laptop, minus roughly $200...? ***? Are taxes billed later? I guess I'll be calling customer service on Monday, that is unless Alienware-James or -Armando are around. Guys...?

 

I received email about it went into assembly on thursday.

You wont OC it with the alienware bios.
It voids the warranty

 

OCing always voids your warranty, and we don't know yet if AW will allow OCing or not. if they don't, i guess you could always flash to a "normal" OCZ BIOS that allows OCing.

 

The last time i checked there is no way to prove if someone has overclocked a CPU. The CPU won't remember it, and the BIOS doesn't store such data, unless alienware have something in there, just set it o normal and you can't say if it has or hasn't.

 

I would actually prefer the Ripley design.

The M17 has the nice rubberized finish instead of the glossy fingerprint-magnet finish of the standard whitebook.

I'm hoping that will work myself.

 

Ok - About to pull the trigger on this. Tell me if there is anything you would do differently, more or less. Can go up to 3k on price but obviously would rather keep it as low as I can. I got some great advice earlier and this is the build I've come up with. What do you think? Thanks! :

very nice config, should serve you well. not sure about the Wifi adapter, but i'm sure you have reasons for it.

 

That one is worth it imo. It's only $25 more so I don't think there isn't much savings there if he was to forgo it.

It's for Draft-N, right? If no Draft-N, then it's same as the included one, right?
Even if I have draft-n, it won't help me in gaming over internet.

 

Well tbh, I just added it because it was only $25 more lol - don't really know the difference, just hoped it might help speed up my connection speeds. But if it's unnecessary I can certainly drop it.

There are no drivers for 3870 so far other then that shipped with your lappy. i dont suppose that there will be any good drivers for 3870 anytime fast. Ati is know for their horrible driver support.

Can the M17 handle faster DDR3 ram? like 1333 instead of 1066? just curious, going to pick some up on newegg today to replace the stock 2 gigs

yes, unofficial drivers are still based on the original manufacturers ones but tweaked so they can work better in laptops. But Since Ati didnt even release the original ones ... the loop goes on

also the guy who asked about 1333 ram yes it will work but it will be downclocked to 1066. also since your the motevina processors are 1066 fsb you wont notice a difference if even if it could stay at 1333
