Eric G. is more privy to those details than me. I was just lucky enough to be leaked info about both systems a while back.

The M18x looks very ominous...me likey so far. The M14x looks like a cheap M15x from the few pics floating around on the TI article.

I'm dying for a new system, so its gonna be a toss up between the M11x R3 and M14x for me.

This. I've done the whole high-end-maxed-out-to-the-max laptop, and I really did like my M17x, but I've come to realise that if you don't absolutely need the portibility, a desktop is far more cost-effective. I'm looking at a "take around college and game on the move" kind of laptop, so I want it to be able to play games - not necessarily maxed out, or even near - but have great battery life, and be reasonably portable. I'm thinking the M14x will be my next laptop.

looks as though previous speculation as to the M17x R3 and M18x being very similar (finish/panel/mb wise) except single vs. dual gpu (and obvious inch larger display) may prove accurate...

Wait - if the M15x is indeed replaced by the M14x, then I doubt the price will be too much less than the current $1200 M11x price :(. Hopefully the M11x R3 does not disappoint. I just want something with better graphic performance than my MacBook Pro for under $800.

When does this mean they will be released?! If they don't refresh the m11x I wouldn't mind too much as long as the M14x is slim enough to lugg around school.

Exactly the same! I have to take my old M9750 around the campus, and turn brightness to nothing to get enough battery life to last me 2 hours. I think the M14x may be perfect, since the 555M can game, SB rocks, and 1080p in 14"? Perfection.

Almost non-existant. At the very least there'll be a 4xxM series card. Doesn't make sense for the M11x to not be DX11 capable.

the answer seems to be YES! but is it really enough to be exited? I just can't figure out there are some Chinese (?) custom built (I mean it is OEM in small quantities) laptops under different branding (Maingear, Eurocom and so on) that feature gtx 485m in 15+ inches, 15+ inches - not 17, why dell is not doing the same, why go mediocre?

The M11x better keep the $600 starting price with a R3 model featuring a Core i3 and a new 4xxx card. The very reasonable price is what makes it a really hot seller. If anything, keep adding mediocre screens as default as long as a higher quality (S-IPS, RGB LED, whatever) 1366x768 option is added.

I doubt it's going to be that cheap a starting point. Maybe a $999 but more possibly a $1100 least with good specs.

I highly doubt they are going to have an R3 for $600 at launch. The $600 one now is the C2D version, which is over a year old.

Michael, you've gotta unattach yourself from these low prices, man. $600 is the starting point of the R1. As i_has_m11x stated, it's the old core 2 duo version. I just sold a USED R2 with MEDIUM specs (640UM 4G memory, 250G HD) for -$810- after someone else sold his used one for $800. And I bought it for $1250 when it was new. This is Alienware we're talking about here. A brand new product with SB processor and updated graphics, even if it is 11", is probably going to start in the $999 neighborhood as morenotebooksplox also stated. The M14x, being even bigger with better components and an optical drive, is going to start even higher. You simply can't set your sights on Alienware with a smaller budget. They will rip your heart out and tear it to pieces.

And what makes it a hot seller isn't the old R1 sitting there for a starter of $599. It's what's always made it a hot seller: The fact that it's the world's smallest gaming laptop. That you don't have to pay a 15x or 17x caliber price is just gravy.

In a mean while i have decided to wait for a Dell or may be other nice manufacturer (don't know I only respect Sony, Dell and Lenovo) with at least gtx 485m inside, Just can't stand an idea of getting a new machine for around 3000+ usd (probably a cost we get if you go 8 - 16 GB ram, ssd, best screen option, best CPU or second to the best CPU and best Video) with a video component obviously one generation old by the time it is released, there were rumors of M17X R3 getting gtx 485m, well i may consider this one, still 17 inches is too big.

I don't think a GTX 485M or anything like it will be inside an actual Dell anytime soon. Right now, the best you can get is the GT 555M in the XPS 17.
I actually have an XPS 15 with a 540M on the way, though. I think it will be enough for my gaming desires. Still glued to the new AW model situation, though.

The best dell offers is actually the 6970m overall....best nvidia is the GTX 460m (do not let the higher numbers fool you)

I know the GTX 460M is a better card that the 555M but had no idea it or the 6970 was offered in a Dell system. Which model? Sorry for spreading false information.

The fact that only 2 resolutions (1366x768) and (1920x1080) are offered on a 14 incher seems odd.

    Why is 1600x900 not offered?

1366x768 is too low of a resolution (not good for productivity apps)

1920x1080 is too high of a resolution (the graphics card is not powerful enough from what I know to produce high enough framerates)

    What gives?

    1600 x 900 would've been perfect. High resolution + high FPS

    M17x r3 has the 460m and 6970.
m15x has the 460m(or used to)

    460m>555m by a lot
    6970>460m by a lot
6970>555 .... you do the math

Well, we don't really know exactly what will be offered but according to early documentation these are the specs of the M14x

You can refer to that post for complete specs

By the way, Dell has begun construction of the M14x product website which might mean that the m14x might be coming soon. Nothing yet on the M18x, apart from what we already know.

I know, the issue is just that I don't want to spend more than $800 on a secondary computer. I would go all-out if I was replacing my MacBook Pro, but I would never replace it with anything other than a newer Mac. I really just want a quality portable gaming laptop with a great screen and enough power to almost max out almost any game (I'm not talking M17x-level power, but enough for it to be at least 40-50% better than my MacBook Pro for games). I almost had that in my $700 M11x R1, but the screen's viewing angles really annoyed me. Glad I didn't keep it though because the R3 is coming just three months after I purchased that so fingers crossed :D.

why do you need 2 laptops?

    IRRC the R1 was $899 with an SU4300, 2gb, 160gb.
    IRRC the R2 was $999 with an I5, 2gb, 160gb...

I see no reason why the R3 would be under $999...

my guess for the M14x will be $1199 with a crappy cpu/vid/memory/hdd

The MacBook Pro is a great Mac, but only an okay Windows system. The MacBook Pro can play the less-demanding games released for Mac really well, but modern games are starting to show its gaming age. I figure it would be better to spend a couple hundred on another laptop than spend over a thousand dollars (after selling my current MBP if I upgraded) to upgrade to the more new MacBook Pro with significantly better gaming performance.

Both laptops would be used and suited for different purposes. I probably will wait for the next major MacBook Pro hardware and design revision until I upgrade it, but that historically means I'll be waiting another two years so a cheap gaming computer makes more sense now.

I like this thread, but please read the thread before blind posting what you think is news, peeps are reposting the same link from 2 or 3 pages ago saying it is new news :p

Considering how much info people have been able to find on the m14x compared to the m18x. So I wonder if they will have 11r3 and 14 ready on website in the next few weeks but maybe hold off the 18 till they can show it off at a show.

I could be wrong but I suspect he's referring to the model numbers of the cards and that higher model numbers do not always mean better performance (e.g. performance of 460M>555M)

Compared to the m14x, we really don't have any concrete information about the m11x, and only a little more than the m18x. Using what we know as a barometer for the release date, we might be in for a bit of a wait :(.

I really hope that this isn't the case.

Definitely! In fact, the 300 or so Dell agents, 147 workers from Dell factories, 293 tech repairmen who work with Dell systems AND my sister, all people whom I know, all say that the new lineup was supposed to be released TODAY and was delayed for tomorrow only because of a last-minute change: the m18x is cancelled and a new über m20x will be released instead. 1 TB SSD, 2x Nvidia gts 320m, i9 CPU (a new CPU developed just for alienware), 64 GB of DDR4 RAM.

    Pure speculated awesomeness! :D

I think he thought I meant any system under Dell and its subsidiares when I actually only meant Dell-branded systems specifically. If the former, the best NVIDIA card is the 460M in the M17x. If the latter (which is what I meant and what I thought we were talking about), then it's the 555M in the XPS 17.
