Official GT 555M specs are on Nvidia.com and confirm that the 192-bit version uses DDR3 and the GDDR5 version of the GT 555M is 128-bit...and overall a much better version.
The alleged specs listed for the M14x say 1.5GB of VRAM so it's a 192-bit GT 555M.
-
Hey, everyone notice the resolutions Chris listed were 720p or 900p? If those are official, I guess the leaked specs that all those other websites were posting weren't accurate since they all mentioned 720p and 1080p, not 900. It also means I'll be keeping the XPS 15 instead of getting a 14x since I prefer a 1080 B+RG screen over a better GPU. Again, if it's true/official. I'm sure many, if not most, of you prefer a 900p resolution as opposed to 1080 in a 14" screen, though, so I'm sure you're happy about it. :]

Could you please (or someone else) explain for the non-techs mortals (in plain human language) how it is that a 128-bit memory interface width in better than a 192-bit?
Thanks!!! -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Because GDDR5 is 2x the speed of DDR3 so it would be the equivalent of 256-bit GDDR3
-
4 x 128 = 512.
512 > 384. -
-
I don't..... So confusing. So is the 555 in the new m14x different from the one in the xps17? Would the 555 in the Alienware be sodered on the board like xps and not upgradeable?
-
still i am kind of disappointed to get 555 in 14 inches model. This to me is like not pushing forward and just playing safe, I don’t like the sound of it and don’t really want to support a company with my money that doesn’t try to be the best. Where should we get GTX 485m – 17 inch only or 18, while other manufacturers put it inside 15inches?

Can we get some M18x love in this thread to! any one anyone!

Still no eSata
At least they have USB 3.0 though
Guess we can also assume that the hard drive will be Sata 3 -
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I am going off the past experience that all SB chipsets had native Sata 3 support

PS. You got the devil post -

NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M base for M11x R3? I hope they get the GT 555M as a step up.
-
USB 3.0 is a nice step up for the m11x r3. I agree that they should use a 555m, though. Maybe I could sell my current m11x and get the money for an r3?
-
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
The most important detail of the R3 that hasn't been reported is its price. It will be interesting to see how the R1 and R2 are positioned after its release as well.

I checked the Dell outlet and I see that its almost all m15x and m17x. I guess Dells really trying to get rid of the m15x for the release of the m14x.
-
-
- Nvm all of the alienware laptops in the outlet are m15x and m17x. -
Wow, I didn't even realize that.. they DO have 3 M11x R2's... but that s it...
Just last weekend I was looking at the M11x's and there were literally TONS! -
Would be nice if Dell/AW would come out and say there won't be a 15.6 model for certain, so I can decide whether to get the sager or not -
-
I'm liking the posted tentative-specs for the M11x. It won't be my main computer obviously, so it's very good for its purpose.
Can't wait to buy one. Although I also wonder if we'll have a GPU upgrade option, probably not. -
-
I think it's safe to assume the 15" Alienware line is EOL.
-
-
They replaced the M15x with the M17x.
-
Since this is the alienware NEW MODEL speculation thread i reckon alienware should make a game console
-
I do not understand. Why would you want an Nvidia GT 555 in the M11x R3? The processor in the machine will be a complete bottleneck for the GPU. No matter how powerful the GPU the GT 555 will be limited to the lower speeds of the CPU. It just would not be a good idea, they need to add a full-blown Core i5 and/or i7, not a ULV. If heat is an issue, then alienware needs to find a better input/output for the air circulation. Come on Alienware, stop selling the same laptops with the same issues, just better/updated hardware!
-
The console market is simply too hard to get into, unless you are willing to through millions upon millions, if not billions, of dollars into R&D and production. Plus convincing publishers like EA and Activision to make games for their console is going to be tough.
At best, I could see Alienware making a rebranded Xbox 360 or PS3. The thought is actually pretty cool. -
-
Guys, I have a quick sorta-unrelated question: is the current m11x hard drive 2.5", and is the size of the R3 hard drive known yet?

When does the M14x get its own section???

PC Gaming>Console
REAL TALK! -
So does that manual still pretty much state that the GT 555M is DDR3 and not GDDR5? (I'm not very technical)
Says,
Discrete Video Memory
* 1.5 GB
* 3.0 GB -
Because can you imagine. The xbox and PS3 are head to head with graphics and games.... (more or less, nothing HUGE)... if alienware created a console, it could hold the power of a pc of the same size, and it wouldn't be bound by the petty arms race microsoft and sony are having (o, and nintendo). It would rock everyones socks. I don't know. I think it's not ever going to happen, but if it did... -
It would rock nothing. There are already two perfectly fine HD systems on the market. Adding a third would be pointless. If it was really so powerful, it would also be very pricey. Either way, no one would develop any exclusive titles for it. It would take a miracle to break out into the console gaming industry with your own machine when there is already so much being offered. Many have tried. Only Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are currently succeeding. If you want a machine that plays games at high res and max settings, get a bloody Alienware PC. They already exist. If you want the console exclusives, get one of the perfectly fine consoles that already exists. Just because the system that runs them didn't cost $3,000 doesn't mean it doesn't still look great.
As for which controller is better (gamepad versus M+K), it depends on the game, obviously. Gamepads are better for console titles, M+K are better for titles that had PC in mind as well as most FPS games. I've been a PC and console gamer for over 20 years. If you only play console games, you are missing out on some great PC exclusives, the best way to play online, MMORPGs, and the best way to experience FPS games. If you only play on PC, you are missing out on some amazing console titles and the best way to play most third person action games. There's nothing sissy about liking either type of platform or control style. It's all gaming. Although I'm sure you posted that rather sarcastically. -
