The 2820QM alone will add at least $500 to the price, assuming the base model starts with an i3 or i5.

Decked out, I say closer to $1799.

I'm considering the mx14 for university but the weight is a huge turn off. Is the 2 extra pounds really a big deal?

Will 1600x900 be an available option? IIRC, the options will be 1366x768 or 1920x1080. (I haven't really been looking at it much so maybe it's been updated in the past few days)

In any case, looks like a very nice config.

By the looks of it, 1920x1080 is not an option.

The spec sheet leaked is 1600x900.

I studied computer science and I saw my mates with all sizes of laptops, from netbooks to 20-inch beasts. The m14x is the average in weight and performance.

Not sure if 2720qm is an option. The 2820qm isnt much of a gain in speed.
Dont buy memory from Dell they overprice it.
Don't buy that HD from Dell they overprice it.

Win 7 Ultimate sounds nice but do you use all the extra function that come with it?

Ah, fair enough. I did think that 1920x1080 was very fine for a 14" screen. (IMO a 1600x900 is better anyway, because lower res = higher FPS and on a screen that small you probably wouldn't notice a difference between the two resolutions)

It's just I remember reading on an article that it was 1366x768 or 1920x1080. Then again I believe the article was on Engadget which isn't exactly a 'reliable' source of information.

Does Dell even sell a Vertex 3 SSD? I think he was planning to add it in aftermarket, as far as I know Dell deals in Samsung SSDs.

But yeah, as you say...if you're going for the memory from Dell...don't. It's much, much cheaper to buy it aftermarket and it's extremely easy to install, even for a novice (provided you can follow instructions). And yeah, the difference in CPU power would be tiny.

I wouldn't go for the 2820qm.... the 2720qm is a much more cost effective solution. You only get like 200mhz more and 2 more mb of cache with the 2820qm.

I was having to lug a Latitude e6410 (about 6 lbs) all over the place for work for awhile and it was hurting my back. But, I got one of those rolling cases, so there are ways to mitigate the weight. Of course, being a girl, maybe I feel a little less embarrassed than a guy would doing this? :p

Also a girl, but I think I would still be embarrassed doing this :p Then again, I'm also going into computer science, don't want the guys thinking I'm weak ;)

If it's a huge problem I might downgrade to mx11 R3 or Acer timelinex 4820tg but I rather not lose the performance/ 14" screen.

I hope the M11x could get a soft-touch finish chassis for the R3. Same for the M14x. The R1/R2 plastic chassis feels cheap. A metal chassis would be preferred, but that would raise the cost too high.

"We tested the gaming performance of the GeForce GT 555M with DDR3 graphics memory in a pre sample of the Dell XPS 17. The synthetic benchmarks show a performance slightly above the old GeForce 9800M GT."

Anyone else disappointed by the choice of videocard in the M14x? For the M11x this is great, but I was expecting much more from a 14" laptop with a 150W power adapter.

There are 15" machines that would make it look like a calculator. There are 13 inch machines not far away from the speed but offer true mobility.

m14x has almost the same size of any 14 inches laptop. Here I am comparing that size with an ASUS n81vp-d1:

    No, you're wrong.

With the m14x's size and weight and battery power, there should be a card twice as fast as the 555m in there. The problem is Dell. They want to market their laptops to maximize sales. Imagine the outrage of current m15x users if they put a 5870m into the m14x? Technically speaking, there is nothing holding Dell back from doing this, it just comes down to money.

The choice of weak video card is also marred by the fact that the same card will be found in the m11x, a whole 3 inches smaller.

    Lame.

No? The M11x gets the 540m, the m14x gets the faster 555m, nobody seems to use 460 and above with optimus, I assume there must be an issue for not a single company to have made an optimus 460m+ laptop.

Where is it you are getting this information from? Maybe just barely beats the GT 9800m, but not by much. Here is a few links. There are no game benchmarks for the GT 555m, but there is no possible way that it will be any better than the GT 9800m. More power efficient, yes. Optimus ready, yes. On paper, yes. But, in real-life situations, no.

    GT 9800M
    NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GT - Notebookcheck.net Tech

    GT 555M
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

It is a mid-range laptop GPU, it will not perform well at all with games at high settings in 1080p. If you look at the comparison chart on the GT 555m, just to shine some light on how low the performance is of this card, and most other laptop cards, the GTX 580 is 362% greater than the GT 555m. Nothing against you, it is just that Nvidia seems to have not put any power into this generation of GPUs, previous gen seems to be more powerful.

Okay so the m11x has a 540m. My mistake, however my point still stands: GT 555m = tehsux0r.

On another note, I for one would gladly trade a a dodo-cd drive for a monster videocard. And I am sure there are many others who would as well. But again, this shall not happen on account of Dell's marketing plan.

You guys should really read through the thread because the same question about the same video card has been asked at least 20 times :p

The 5850, which can handle almost everything on high-ultra, is 7% faster than the 555m, therefore speculation says that the 555m will be able to handle almost everything on high (and everything definitely on med).

    The 555M is faster than a 9800GT.
    555M> 9800GT> 5730.

There is no need for anything faster than a 555M in a 14" notebook. Like previously mentioned, it will be more than enough for anyone's "gaming on the go" needs.
If you want to have more power get the M17x...

At least 15% faster, hopefully 30%...
