is anyone going to play with the m15x at the Convention on Jan. 7?
if anyone plans to, it'd be nice to post the dimensions and whatever else assuming Alienware doesn't post it themselves.

Well there's one big problem regarding the m15x, it doesn't have a DVI out port neither does the m17x, which is a shame.

Then it def. has HDMI and there should be an HDMI->DVI adapter?
Since there is a DVI->HDMI one....
But yes, it would be great if it did have the DVI, would save some adapters from hangin around...

He said, " u can get below two thousands dollars if u cut here and there". That gives some hints that the starting price would be below $2000.

The thickness and weight would really be the dealbreaker with the m15x

yes but m9750s are not penryn compatible. + no smart bay, Still use the nappa platform which is expensive to upgrade. No flashy lights hehe rubber peels, etc. Also sub 2000 means that the config page wasnt that far off and if the base for the 17x is anywhere near 2,200 ill be happy as hell.

There is an aweful amount of bezel around the screen though. I'm not too impress by that, looks a bit like a laptop from 10 years ago, the area around the screen at least.

I didn't notice that either. I do wish somebody could figure out the dimensions of it. I'm debating whether to wait for it or spring for a 1530...I like the dimensions of the 1530, but the 8800 and dual hard drives in the m15x are very very appealing...

    m15x available Friday!!!

If you watch the video, the guy says that it can have as high as 4-5 hours of battery life! That is really amazing if you ask me, considering the specs. I think I might have to buy one now... only problem is that the area around the screen is so big; I might get the m17x for that but I bet it'll be too pricey for me.

Penryns should be drop in compatible. Im gonna get my t9300 as soon as my M15X arrives. Im looking to get around 5-7 hours of battery life with my computer while running normal tasks like internet, word, itunes, etc... Im gonna do that with a penyrn, 8800m gtx, Smart bay battery and back up 12 cell. You guys think ill make it past 5?

well i think that's only when you switch to integrated graphics, which seems actually possible, especially when you consider you can use the smart bay as an extra battery.

It looks good, more compact than I previously thought. By the way, why is there no talk of m17x? Is this indicating that it's not going to be available until around Feb/Mar? (They said Q1 2008 when announcing both notebooks). If that’s the case then I’ve got to wait a lot longer than I expected, given the fact that they tend to release things here in the UK a month after the US launch :(

Q1 can be until March. Apparently the m17x is delayed because of the 8800M GTX not being fully ready for SLI just yet and AW wants to release it with the SLI available.

For what it is worth, the Sager/Clevo 9262/D901C with 8800M SLI has been officially delayed until "late February 2008" due to an 8800M/SLI issue so it makes some sense that the m17X might be delayed for the same reason.

yeah i just decided to go with the M15X because the M17X is gonna be coming out a lot later. That and 17" is too big for a laptop that your gonna wanna carry around. And the M15X should be able to upgrade to a better graphics card later right?

To answer your question Laxislife, I don't think that Alienware will be offering a better graphics card than the 8800 GTX when it comes out because that card will take a long time to come out (ie. the GeForce 9 Series or 8950 GTX if there's such a thing) and by then Alienware will be in need of an update to the m15x. Therefore they will just launch a new laptop with the updated or new generation card in it and offer the m15x with the older graphics card option for a cheaper price. They do this so that they can get rid of all of the leftover and spare parts from their old series to make way for the new generation of series; and obviously if they offered the m15x and the new generation laptop both with the new generation of graphics power no one would want to buy the old generation m15x anymore. Take the m9750 for example; right now they are selling this laptop for a rock bottom price (or atleast compared to what they were selling it for) in order to make way for the m15x. The 8800 GTX Graphics card is already available in some laptops (Rock has it in one of their laptops already), Alienware could easily offer the 8800 GTX as an option on the m9750, but they won't because they want to make the m15x look better because they are going to be asking a good sum of money for it. So therefore they are just going to be continuing selling the m9750 with the old generation 8700m graphics card so that people will go for the new generation laptop with a higher asking price, while still getting rid of all of the left over m9750's and their parts.

On a completely different note, does anyone know the dimensions and weight of the m15x yet. I am dying to know. If anyone is at CES this week it would be helpful to take rough dimensions yourself, using the cheap ruler imprinted on a swiss army knife would even work if you have to improvise. It would be a great help to all of us (especially me :) ) to know the size of it. It would probably be easier on second thought to just ask the person running the booth, lol.

P.S. The m15x and m17x are not even close to being the same thickness so don't respond with that answer, it's clearly seen in the pictures from Alienwares site if you compare any two pics.

    Actually I'm not so sure about the possibility of an 8800M upgrade being made available on the m9750;

    1. It’s the hottest feature of the m15x and m17x, therefore I don't think they would want to make it available on the older/cheaper model, as it would damage the sales of the new model for obvious reasons.

    2. Putting aside the profitability issues, there could still be some issues; Heat.
Even though the notebook versions of these cards are watered down to help reduce certain factors such as size, power consumption and heat generation, the 8800M is still a big leap from both 8700M and 7950 in terms of performance and all of the above issues. Also Alienware have designed the inside of the chassis of the new models form ground up, most importantly to address the heat issue with the 8800M.

"With this new model, initially announced in December but available starting later in January..."

It doesn't mean 'late January', it means later then December, in January! Which means anytime in January! lol

I've got a way to measure the M15x easely without have to take a ruler with u to CES, here is how :p

whoever decides to measure it can put his arm next to it and then see from where to where it goes and then check at his house an aproximate size ;)

Thats how i would do it :D.

    Just my 2 cents
