I used 8.10 to benchmark.. it actually scored higher on 3dmark with my setup. It has the same performance tweaks as the 8.12 - but for gaming 8.12 is far superior. I actually score 14.9 with the tweaked 8.10, and 14.7-14.8 with the 8.12 version. Only about 100 points difference on average. The Vantage score, I for some reason can't get it to repeat. I'm not sure why, but it just isn't happening. The scores in my sig are all overclocked, none stock.
Your score, however..that's very respectable. When you decide to overclock, if you do.. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=325944 - This thread will offer some good guidance. Keep in mind, AW frowns upon overclocking.. that's also covered in the guide.![]()

Much appreciated. Overclocking will be a consideration for me in the near future. I only took the one year warranty for that vary reason.
I have a wall mounted AC unit directed toward my laptop. To increase cooling substantially I have the laptop on a simple LapCoolTX notebook stand to raise it for proper circulation. I had two flexible ducts as well running directly under my laptop and into the intake but the opening on one end of the duct was to small to bring in significant amounts of cool air. I dunno maybe I will put two funnels onto the tube to increase the surface area. Cooling is the biggest concern and I hope this will suffice.
Are the temps. manageable on your whitebook when it's overcolocked? -
and if you want to lower the temps even more try applying Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound. i just got done doing that a few hours ago and already my temps are about 5degC lower, i'm expecting about 10degC lower temps (than before applying Arctic Silver 5) in about a few days after several heat/cooling cycles of the compound.
also, don't be scared about voiding your warranty. warranty is always nice but if you're very careful with your expensive equipment then you really shouldn't worry about it. F*** AW with their warranty policies. you can't be scared to push and maximize the efficiency of your machine to it's potentials. -
Glad it worked for ya Shnitz.. You trim those thermal pads up too?
-
nah man i was thinkin about it, but i didn't want to f*** with em. but i did re-position them a little better so every chip that had pads on em was covered completely. there was a chip or 2 that had a little piece not covered. kinda concerned me a little.
-
Good deal. Hope it helps

I have been getting this screen jumping problem in FarCry 2 for the last 2 days. I think it was GTA that modded there exe to do this in case of bootlegging but I assure you this is a 100% legal copy. I'm going to try the factory drivers to see if it changes.
Settings:
1920x1200 - 60Hz - V-Sync off - AA off - DirectX 10 - Wide Screen
What other info would like me to post for you e-wrecked? -
hello
i m owning a m17 with basic feature ( p8400 2gig 2x3870 160gig hd 1440x900 display 32bit vista ( thx alienware didn t changed my command for a 64bit version as i asked =( ))
Anyway after i received my m17 i decided to install these driver .
Did a full driver cleaning b4 i intalled the 8.12. all went well but now when i try to run Catalist Control center i got an erroe message saying Comand line interface stopped functionning program has to shut down.
I tried Re clean eveything ( deltete driver in device manager , desinstal driver , run driver sweeper in safe mode ...blah blah blah...), re install :
Same problem
Did it again trying re install ocz video drivers , then alienware video drivers ,
then back to 8.12 nothing to do i always have ccc not opening .
Went on ati support page they said i had to install framework.net but when i try vista says it s allready part of the os !
What can i do ? any clue
Sorry for the english btw , i m french doing what i can.
Thx for the answers -
Hi
it sounds like you have your m17 just a few days? If it's so what about a clear reinstall of vista? It's not the best idear but it's one
Or have you just tryed to clear deinstall and than let Vista load a new driver? I heard this can also help but never tryed it.
One question ... can you select 1280x800 or only 1280x720?
Greetings
Julian -
why is a reinstall of OS (vista in this case) always the first thing people think of as a solution when problems occur? reinstalling an OS should be the last resort. it took me about a week to get my system to where i wanted it to be (all my apps, drivers, updates, etc). reinstalling the OS is DEFINITELY not on my check list when something comes up. i'm currently having some issues as well: 3dmark06 and 3dmark vantage not running consistently at all, i get an error in the middle of vantage runs saying "it lost focus" or some s***. tried a bunch of stuff, i've pretty much narrowed it down to application incompatibility, because the last time i've had vantage running very well was before i decided to install all my games and apps on this machine and before i decided to defrag it using TuneUp Utilities 2009. but i've said, i've gotten nice scores out of those programs i'll just wait til a newer version comes out or something. also, i've gone back to the unmodded 8.12 drivers because whenever i have e-wrecked's modded 8.12 drivers on here, all is well and get nice scores BUT it freezes everytime i shutdown or restart. AND it use to never do that, i'm not sure what i did or put on my system for the modded drivers to start doing that, but w/e.
I guess what i'm trying to say is...whatever the problem u got, theres always another solution or another alternative (original unmodded 8.12 drivers for me) instead of wiping system and factory restoring system. F*** that noise. it seems like some people are having more problems after factory restoring it. no thanks. -
Fskdc, that's a FC2 and ATI problem. Before the 8.12 driver things were much worse. It would drop framerates and skip around MUCH more. It may have something to do with the anti-piracy protection, but 8.12 literally doubled FPS on FC2. Run a bench and post your results using the Long Ranch run ultra high settings. Oh, and I've realized that the CCC options play a HUGE factor when it comes to FC2. Toy with your performance settings a bit.
Cassi: have you tried manually running the CCC? Right click your desktop and try opening the Control center.
Shnitz: funny you say that.. My system has been hanging at shutdown recently. Does yours shutdown properly with diff drivers? -
I tried to start ccc manually ( since its icon wasn t appearing in the task bar ) that lead to the same error .
I might also say that the games i m playing atm seems running normally ( King bounty the legend ( although 2d screen got awfull 15 frame /sec ( about 40-50 during the game in 3d ))or stalker ).
And ( if it may help ) i tried install ati tool but it never worked .Icon apear when i start it in the task bar but then, it never get the freqency or anything and i have to use the task manager to close the app, since it doesn t respond when i try to close it.
For the re install vista , i ll do that if my system fail or after official 3870 mobility driver release ( if it happen someday ), if i still dont have ccc to work properly . -

I'm asking that everyone visit this thread I started in ATI/AMD Forums and please comment. Please help our voice be heard. Register, comment, and let's rattle their cages. We need official drivers for these GPUs. It will only take 5 minutes of your time. -
That's the problem, if I were to assume. The ATI Tool install likely messed something up. Just uninstall it.. and then leave ATI Tool out of the picture.
-
As soon as i figured atitool wasnt working properly i uninstalled it .i did that a long time ago and none of the clean installtion i did since then are running CCC
-
Thanks for the advice "E". I randomly played with the settings, no real consistency in the findings but it did work. When it starts bogging out I just mess some things around and it stops.
I posted on ATI's forum for you (and all of us really). It is the only way to get things fixed. I just hope the M17 and other RADEON MOBILE owners out there take the time. Us gamers are a lazy bunch but maybe just this one time we will grunt our way over to the forum and post. -
I posted something @ ATI Forum
... hopfully it will help
Greetings

I clicked on the "report this post to a moderator" button and wrote the message "I'm offended by AMD".
I thought it was funny. -
hah..well, I figure the reason no official ATI rep has stepped in is because it's in the Mobility thread. I posted in another ATI forum, hoping it will attract more attention. PLEASE contribute.

Thanks again, love ya guys!
Also, I am having to sell my OCZ - so if anyone is interested, please PM me. I'll be buying a new one in a month or two.. Just have to do it cause things are rough with my big move an' all. Anyhow.. lemme know if you're considering a M17 -
Ill trade you a slightly used M17. lol.
I added to the other forum and sent a link to [email protected]. He never responded to my false credit card charges problem so I don't know if he will to this either. -
Yeah..those folks aren't great with CS, from what I gather. Oh well..
Thanks again for the follow-up post.
-
UPDATE: Modded the new Hotfix drivers.. performance gains is minimal. However, no more hanging at shutdown. Works smoothe as eggs. Gonna post em tomorrow.. Anyhow, til then.. peace.
-
Updated the 8.12 Mod - Resolved Lockups after sleep, audio skipping, and also shutdown hangs.. Not sure if it was the previous driver version or tweaks. Either way, this one resolves all issues and provides me better performance than the previous version. Now using HotFix released 12/18/08
Here's the link for 64bit Vista - http://ewrecked.darksmileysystems.com/8-12E_wreckedHotFixVista64.zip
I'll mod 32bit tomorrow.
Hope it works out well for everyone else. -
If not, can I use the 1280x800 "version" you made 4 me with this driver?
THX
Greetings
Julian -
Thanks for the work you put in to the drivers "E"!
If your moving to Toronto I'll help you unload the truck. -
lol..thanks fsk
julian, no 1280x800.. I think the problem may be my screen? Since I modded it, it may be basing it off of my resolutions? Not sure man. If I figure it out, you'll be the first to know. -
Still GREAT WORK!
Greetings
Julian -
Just want to say thanks for this thread mate, drivers work great so far and seemed to fix a small bug i has having running maya.
-
Nice. No problem
-
Oh wow thx E, unfortunately im on deployment right now and really have no way of dl'ing those drivers until we hit port since the ship comps dont let us dl files. But thx ill get them one way or another and im sure theyll be smoothe as eggs when i test em out
-
word.
I'm sure they'll be good for ya.
-
Did you get a chance to mod the 32bit ones yet?
-
Sorry, I have been too distracted by my O2 XDA Exec and flashing new cooked ROM's on it to post some feedback since the hot fix.
Everything is thumbs up on my rig. A lot of the screen "shaking" in FarCry 2 has been minimized. It used to act up maybe 20-30mins in (not sure if the temps are a trigger) but now there held back to 1 hour in. It actually happened in DOD Source the other day too. Not too concerned about that. I'm getting like 160 FPS in that game on high, lol. I have been landing head shots on n00bs while sprinting all week.
Thanks again E! -
lol...noob assassin! Get 'em man!
-
Wanted to post a quick thanks to E-wrecked for the awesome driver's and clean install instructions. I was having an issue in WoW that was causing some strange "jumping" or "shaking" to happen on occasion with the factory installed drivers. When I upgraded to these bad boys, the problem stopped immediately. The GPU fan runs a bit more with these, but I just got an NZXT laptop cooler so I'm not too worried about temps.
Thanks again! -
TurbodTalon Notebook Virtuoso
Hey Thagoris, what resolution and graphics settings are you using in WoW? I have trouble running 60fps in Northrend @1920x1200 all maxed settings. I noticed you were averaging 177.
-
Greetings
Julian -
I've got everything maxed with the exclusion of shadows and distance. The shadows would get jumpy on me when they were maxed, so I've got them notched down just a bit. On the distance side of things, I'm one notch down from the max. I'm playing with maxed resolution, but I also don't have my camera distance set too far back. I've noticed the further back I go with the camera distance, the lower the FPS go. Now I don't have it in first player shooter mode, but I've got it a few clicks back so I can see my toons full body, but it doesn't really grab everything else.
-
Oh and as a side note...I also play on a really low population server, which I think may have something to attribute to it as well. Especially the FPS in Dal.
-
You say that you play on max resolution ... do you have the 1920x1200 or 1440x900 Display?
Greetings
Julian -
1920X1200...sorry I didn't post that! I spent the extra bucks for the upgraded monitor.

This thread is sinking into obscurity, E. How about reviving it with those 32-bit drivers?
- F -
so now I have my new m17
I'll try 3DMark06 and than try E-wrecked drivers @ Crysis and co
Greetings
Julian -
Congrats julian!
Oh.. I modded the 32bit Hotfix - The others perform better so I am not going to post the Hotfix version up. No need.. -
and new problem ... I went to (now german version of vista so I have no idear what the name is^^) the place where you can chance the volume of the partitions ... I made the C (where Vista is) smaler, but it was only possible to short it around 43GB and I did, but ... that is not realy what I wanted to do^^
Edit: I want to do this because of this aim:
C: 20gb for Vista
G: what is left for Games and W7 or B: 20GB W7 G: what is left for Games"
I have around 77gb left at C ... and can not put that to G (only 43GB) ...
no I am sad... E-wercked! HELPE ME PLS! Otherwise I will start crysing
Just kidding^^
Greetings

Yes.. They work on win7 - and it's not a big deal. Drivers are an easy fix.. You keep getting worked up over little things. Chill man
-

-
Sounds like somthing is getting too hot?
What do the fans do? What speed do you think they have when the FPS drops and what speed when the rais again?
Greetings
Julian
Edit: AW drivers @ my m17 + W7 ~ 12,4k now^^ E-wereckd will follow^^
Is there a list what I can disable in taskmanager to get better performance @ 3DMark? I normaly just switch W-Lan Bluetooth Webcam Touchpad off (NF + F"X") -
