I have to say, I've never experienced the microstuttering that apparently happens with multicard solutions at about 30fps.
-
-
ugh. Story of my life with the 8800M GTX SLI's.
So excited to be getting ATI, I've also heard that there aren't really microstuttering problems with Crossfire. -
according to these benchmarks the 280's are clearly faster. I don't know how reliable these benchmarks are thou. Besides performance the Phys are a plus too with the nvidia cards.
-
Those scores are all wrong
..
I scored 17k in 06 on my 4870s in the W90 which is where there 4870 numbers come from and almost 11k in Vantage... -
Problem with PhysX is games have to support it for it to be a benefit.
I kind of prefer ATI myself (have a 4870x2 in my desktop),but have to admit.
If i'd bought mine with the 4870's and discovered that the cards weren't as advertised i'd go mad.
(used work in dell so i'd call in some favours to get it resolved) -
With Cat 9.10, the 4870s can score 11k GPU score without a GPU overclock (as seen in the Asus W90 forums). So notebookcheck.net needs to do some updating as with the GTX 280 scores since they have also improved a bit.
Nonetheless, Notebookcheck has some stuff correct, but not everything. -
I placed my order right in the middle of the whole DDR5/3 debate and got spooked away from the ATI cards. I am partial to NVidea as a whole, but would have had no problem with ATI if they are running faster.
-
im all for ati...have a 9600 thats been going like a champ since 2004
-
lol the 9600 was a special case lol it can play any game even today the laptop version of the 9600 was what i used until the laptop it self died
the old 9600 did ran any game that was dx9 even if the min requirement was a desktop x1000 serie card
how ever i feel like my new lappy don,t have a such awsomeness in it don't get me wrong the 4850 are great card and have plenny of power but they lack some personality LOL but who knows maybe in 3 years they will have some XD
but the experience of the 5 years old card runing supremme commander made me sell my soul to ati -
You have to take notebookcheck with a grain of salt. They are like Dell..instead they are mis-advertising benchmarks.
I can't believe you guys are not taking more of stance than accepting a mere $100 maybe $200 credit back if you are lucky...that's just trying to get your money back if that. The lies, the mis-advertisement, and the mis-trust is a total fraud. Now that they got caught red-handed the only thing they can do maybe is to offer you a little bit of a credit back? That's BS, what if they got away with this without no one knowing? You guys have spent so much time being dissappointed and now have to accept what you got and hoped for whatever little money to come back? You guys are falling into Dell's trap because that is exactly what they want you to do is to accept it and move on unless you guys take a better stance and sue the sh** out of Dell to teach them a lesson for playng with consumers hard earned money like the way they have.
End of Rant! -
I will get an answer tomorrow. I get a GDD5 or a refound.

enjoy your refund....people still think they are going to get a real GDDR5 card?!
-

Remember many moons ago when AW owners of M17 thought they were going to get GDDR5 cards?
But wait....
Remember when owners of M17x thought THEY were going to get GDDR5 cards?
Next thing you know, the 4870 w/ GDDR5 will be showing up as an option for the M15X. -
well, I got mine tonight and its GDDR3 for sure! ATI's software states gddr3 in it. I guess I have to start the war with Dell also for some type of compensation as mine stated gddr5 on my invoice. But, on a brighter note the red is AWESOME!!!
-
gonna have to say...."i told you so"
no such thing as gddr5 mobile cards. and that's after a year of people saying they we're getting them, only to make some side excuse on why they didn't..nothing personal!!
rotflmao
yeah, been waiting a whole year to say that. hahaha
but seriously...the cards perform so what's the real problem here? they are within a few frames of each other in most games. and then each has it's own set of games it does better in. although no one seems to beable to over clock any gpu's and gain anything in the m17x...is this true? the old out dated 9800m gtx gained over 3000 points when over clocked.(vantage) and the only thing over clocking them got was test 5 to show gains while the other 3 test pretty much staed the same. i figure that is probably the same with the 280m (speculations) and the ati's...a bit of a mistery....or issues with the platform ...maybe... or has anyone over clocked them yet. (4870's) -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Overclocking the GTX 280m's definitely will increase the performance in the M17x
As for GDDR5 mobile cards, aren't the new GTS 240m or something like that, the 128 bit cards, arent those GDDR5?
GTS 250m GDDR5 mobile! -
only talking about ati gddr5 cards. since this was suppose to be the mobile flagship card. now that desktop card (5870)...is kicking but
gts240m....ill beleive it when i see it or someone reputable actually says.."this is a g5" other than that...not going for it...lol -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
The link I provided is for the new Qosmio sporting a GTS 250m with GDDR5
You a fan of the 5870's? Still on the fence on whether I will get a pair or not lol, got buyers for the GTX 275's if I decide to -
they can post 500 links, just like what was done for the 4870s, but until someone in here with a positive reputation states that they are in fact that...cool, but as for now...not going for it.
why?
because all that hyping things up and look at how many people are mad, upset, not REALLY happy but will say they are, bought the machine on the sole fact that they would be g5...and the list goes on...
if no one would have said anything..the sales, returns and cancellations would not be as high as they are now. (speculations of course) all because of one word phrase...gddr5
gts 240m or gts 250m? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I will stop by the local microcenter run GPU-Z on it and get a picture for you
They got one on display there -
Yeah the new Toshiba is sporting DDR5 cards .. The new cards also have DX10.1. The whole 128bit thing ..... Yeah.. No thanks
..
The new GTX260m thats supposed to be coming is also DDR5 DX10.1 128bit but is "supposed" to be as fast as the current 260m.. -
really? hell...if you don't i will. i know the people at my local microcenter. and they would go for that. so they could tell people what was really going on if they cam in to buy just because of that.
looks like it could be, but im still not biting...lol
gts250m
Memory Clock (MHz) Up to 2000 MHz
Memory Interface Width 128-bit
MXM Type MXM 3.0 Type-B
this would defeat the whole ati being first with mobile gddr5 cards and smacking nvida in the mouth with a stern back hand.(seem to be doing fine with g3 though)
and the flagship card gets the lower of everything...wth was nvidia thinking! (waiting on samsung g5 memory just like ati was.(speculations fo course) -
DDR5 or not its still some weak sauce when it comes to a gaming card.. Now we know where all the DDR5 memory went to that should have been on the 4870/4850s
..
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Agreed, definitely a smear on the past Qosmio machines and name
Wish someone would get their crap together and figure out 2 GPUs and a Core i7 all in a notebook! (Or Clevo make the D901C just with MXM 3.0b slots haha) -
..

And agreed with what you said about ATI vs Nvidia and GDDR5 lol, oops?!
The GT S 260m is only 96 cores, not the 112 of the GT X 260m. The 128 bit GDDR5 will be about the same bandwidth of the 256 bit GDDR3, shame they screwed that up so bad....The GTX 260m will perform higher (although 55 nm and not 40 nm like the new stuff - may mean different OC thresholds) -
ddr5 you say?
wow, compromise or sheer performance..... are tey going to at least let people choose on their website? -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
the thing with the 128bit bus even though they have gddr5 (to speed things up) is how it can handle all the data at high resoultions. that's when it will fail. (1680*1050 and higher.)
another thing is nvidia change res will heavily impact performance. switch from 1920*1200 to 1920*1080 is like night and day with these cards. i thought it was my single 9800m gtx was causing it becuase of lack of sli but it's the cards.
so in terms of the 260m gtx vs the 260m gts. the 260m gtx will win at higher resolutions. -
I have a big problem. I ordered my other BLACK M17x system about three weeks ago and just got it tonight.
Like everyone here, my invoice was changed, it used to say DUAL GDDR5 4870 in crossfire. But it then changed and I was shipped a system with only ONE 4870 ATI card! ? What should I do?
I don't want to call dell and ask for the second 4870 because if I recall, someone on these forums asked dell for a 280M due to theirs being faulty card and received a refurbished 280M in return! In an essence, I don't want a refurbished 4870 especially seeing that I just received this system no more than 2 hours ago. It is brand new!
And to top it off, if a card was shipped, that would mean a dell rep will have to come to my house, and being the stupid (Not-so-careful) guy he is with every customer's computer (besides his own computer) open up my system and potentially screw it up!
Should I just return it? Or keep it the way it is and ask dell for the difference and possible an upgrade such as to an SSD they can send me? Or maybe a processor upgrade such as a QX9300?
What would be fair and what should I do? -
did you look through the vents to make sure it's only one card?
-
Every spare part Dell ships out says refursbished whether its brand new or not so dont even worry about.. They had some lawsuit many years ago and thats why they put that refurbished tag on it...
And yeah check to make sure theres not 2 cards there IE the device manager.. -
My opinion would be to get the second card for sure! Even if they send a tech and you are not happy with the results you could return it afterwards and re-order. -
I am not a noob here guys, I already owned an M17x look at my sig..
I just got tricked into the whole GDDR5 thing and bought the system.
my invoice used to say that i have dual and in cross fire, now it was changed (like everyone else's) and doesnt say "DUAL" anymore. but i didnt suspect that they'd ship my new m17x with just one card.
can anyone else recommed anything else? -
send it back
-
If that does not work, you need to write them a written complaint and request them to contact you before a certain date and explain that if they fail you hand the issue over to your lawyer.
If they fail to contact you before the requested date (make it 10 days or so) then you hand it over to your lawyer.
Good luck, hope you get it sorted lemonspeaker.
ps. why is everyone derailing from the subject in this topic?
People are complaining about the fact the dell has sold them graphics cards with DDR5 which they did not get, and all you people say is "it dont matter the card is different, it is still very good"..
lol people thats not the point now is it??
Everyone that has been sold DDR5 and got DDR3 should fight Dell for it. -
Seems like people don't care to loose 50% performance and get a 50$ refound... i don't get it
-
GDDR5 would be nicer but its not going to give you twice the real life performance with an underclocked mobile GPU. Sorry..
GDDR3 is fine with me after seeing that it keeps up or beats the 280M SLI. By all means get a partial refund because what you got was not what you ordered, but 50% is not correct. -
He probably meant memory bandwidth.
-
yeah i meant memory bandwidth sorry.
-
it's Gddr3/5
how about this...the original point was.."there never was any gddr5 cards and people are just now starting to realize it after 1 year" -
regardless, send it back or ring Dell and go mad -
I've call dell today and the sale rep. tell me that Ati don't have the 4870 with GDDR5 on the market right now.
Seems like i will get a refound -
best way to go...get a refund...
more than likely ati will move to the newer cards for it's mobile network. and if you buy now...then get hit with a 800 dollar upgrade price later... -
I might actually be making some progress here. Received a call from Dell today, after sending an e-mail directly to Mr. Michael Dell. The e-mail was courteous, asked for his assistance, and stated what happened and when to include dates, case numbers, web site addresses, phone numbers and customer representative numbers for the Dell employees involved.
The Customer Service gentlemen that called didn't seem to be familiar with the issue, but he wanted the facts. I scanned in a copy of both my Invoice and Packing slip both showing GDDR5, screen shots showing GDDR3 and a screen shot of the Italian web site showing GDDR5 still being sold. All were e-mailed to his personal e-mail address at Dell along with a running list of all the events.
We'll see what happens. But, this may be the first call from Dell to a customer to try to address the issue.
On a related note, there may be a case for Mail Fraud on this issue...anyone know if UPS or FedEx are covered by mail fraud laws? I would think it would still apply, but I'm sure not a lawyer. -

Hey everyone-
I saw there was some pretty heated discussion in this thread, and thought I'd drop by to maybe help clear things up a bit. I'm the Dell Gaming Guy working at Dell HQ in Round Rock, and after seeing this thread, took your concerns up with AW engineering. The official word is posted on Direct2Dell in this post:
http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/...adeon-mobility-hd-4870-with-gddr3-memory.aspx
The TL;DR version -
This is definitely a card with GDDR3, *not* GDDR5, there are no plans to offer GDDR5 on this card, and the mistake on the website showing this as a GDDR5 card has been corrected.
Dell will honor any full refund/return requests to those who had GDDR5 on their invoice by mistake, though I urge you to actually test the card against other laptop video solutions before making a refund request. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
So, was this post due to the e-mail that I sent with the link to this thread? If it is, I thank you for takiing the time to address this personally and clear things up. It seems that everyone at Aw Tech, Dell Tech, Dell CS, and even Dell Retention dept was clueless. I am happy to see that everyone is now on the same page with this issue. I can move on now.... -
@Rengsey-
I just ran across it, actually, and decided to do some digging of my own. My digging got the right eyes on the problem, and we should be all on the same page now.
Sorry about all the confusion :-/
GDDR5 = GDDR3 4870 CrossFireX confusion...any contact from Dell regarding this?
