So the 6970's supposed to be available AFTER the relaunch (in the US), right? For sure?

It could be WITH the relaunch who knows really, but if it isn't it shouldn't be long after. It is in the manual and was available on many of the international Dell sites before the R3 was pulled. Doesnt seem like any of them got shipped out beforehand but it means they should be available around when the R3 launches. Again you lose the 3D and 120hz (I think) options with it. Switchable graphics should work with it (stated in the review).

for the people who bought through aafes... since i have cancelled my order over a week ago i have had nothing but problems getting my money back..... as of last night they said it could be 7-10 more business days, add that to the 9 days i've already waited and that's 3 weeks to get my refund.. I should have just held strong and waited because by the time they find out where my money is the r3's will pry be shipping again

Yeah, this is why I'm going to try to not get a refund, just get a re-order. I've had what you're experiencing happen to me lots of times with many products when dealing with a 3rd party. Not a big deal with something small, but this is a bigger chunk of change than I want to have floating around in limbo while I pay for it again.

Not to go OT, but I just saw that there is the option for a Blu-Ray writer on the XPS 17, might be of interest to some...

I saw that yesterday and have been debating about cancelling my R3 order and getting the XPS. Since I will be using it mostly for photography, I don't think the downgrade in video cards with have any practical impact for me. I would be upgrading the CPU, Memory, Hard Drive, and adding Blu-ray writer and tv tuner for a little less thaan what I paid for the R3. What to do, what to do.

Just talked to a Dell rep on the chat support, this is how it went down, I had asked when my order status was ( I had ordered an M17x R3) They said the usual, Dell blahblahblah, Intel blahblahblah, the thing is, this rep had A LOT more info than most reps. He had said that it was because "apparently" Intel had was only making processors for the XPS 17, and "apparently" the architecture of the chip for the XPS 17 was different from the Alienware m17x and so they (the XPS SB chip) are apparently not compatible with the Alienware M17x R3 board (or something) and so they cannot put them into the Alienware's and like I may or may not have said before, the rep had said that Intel were not offering them any "Alienware compatible" chips.

Hope this helps, oh and just so you know, throughout the whole conversation, I was thinking to myself...but they have the same processors and use the same chips..at least thats the impression I got from Lionel's post (Direct2Dell)...

Sounds like a bunch of hooey.

As always, buy what your budget allows. The only thing keeping me from an xps is the video card. 555gt is alright, and the price is pretty good, too. You'll have optimus (if it's working properly) so battery life shouldn't be an issue.

Go with what best fits you. We can't tell you what to buy since you will be using it. I can tell you, by reading your post, I'd say go for the xps.

The XPS 17" has just one Hard drive, so Dell are selling them with the bugged chipset B2 like Intel authorizes that.

Stop it with the rumors. The XPS 17 has 1 HDD, 1 Optical drive and 1 eSATA which is not authorized by Intel.

Called today, and to no avail.

Received an email from my csr guy, saying that per the information from their internal order processing team, that the issue will be solved sometime in the month of April... Then, the same stuff about my option to cancel, and order another system that's not affected. Then he says my EDD is still the same, and he's unsure of how some folks had theirs changed to March. And then he has the nerve to ask for my "friends' order numbers so he can check with the factory about this."

That's basically it though. I was unable to reach aafes or anyone helpful at Dell today :(

02/24/2011 11:26:47AM Agent (Ace Rogelito L): "with regards to the R3 series m17x kris, we still dont have an exact date on its relaunch bec our managers have not yet cascaded any infos about it..but since we have the new processors on the XPS line and the R3 aurora, it wont be long til we offer the m17xR3 again..my best guess will be next week, they will be offered already ^_^"

Sounds like "i know the date but i cant officially tell you" kind of guess lol XD

At least he's giving you something. My guy keeps telling me, as I get the information I will update you, and he keeps saying this over and over in every sentence (via email).

Yah, I saw the XPS last nite and I was like, WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT where's my R3!

EDIT: Just configured an XPS 15, and the EDD for it is 3/18. WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT?!?!?!?

What im pissed about is that they already have the new mobos on the AW aurora R3s. I would think the m17x R3 to be a bigger priority but i guess i was wrong.

My EDD got update last week, didn't post it because that time we were going to ignore EDD.

Anyway my EDD now is 3/4/2011 and I'm hoping it'll really be that. I also hope that we all get the 1st batch of the fixed R3s as I think we waited long enough.

If I had to guess I would say the M17x R3 will be back on sale on Monday or Tuesday. It would make sense since the XPS 17's are already for sale and the EDD's on M17x R3 are around 3/4. Most companies dont release products at the end of the week since they have reduced work-force on the weekends.

It was first set as 02/17/2011 then was updated to 02/25/2011 then now its 03/04/2011.

I almost cancelled it during the 25th but didn't do it because I heard that Intel fixed the issue.

Wow I am pissed! This guy calls saying ur order might get cancelled in a day or two because of the long edd. I tell him no I don't want it cancelled you guys keep calling and I say the samething, I've been following everything so you don't need to explain. He says theirs no promise. I call aafes cr ( girl sounded cute lol) but I tell her how persistent they are and to make sure not to cancel. I also explain to her about the email I received and I choose the option to wait. She puts a note for me. So I'll see what happens.

So during work today, got a call from the "supervisor" of my csr guy. He told me that my csr guy told me that I was very unhappy and that he wanted to help me out. The supervisor told me that unfortunately there's nothing they can do for me, but knowing that I was unhappy, suggested that I can cancel the R3 and order something that doesn't have the SB issue. Once again, I told this cat the same stuff that I've been telling everyone. He apologized quickly, and then I told him that I'm gonna wait it out. Then I told him I configured an XPS 17 for fun online, and the EDD was 3/18. I told him that they have the same SB cpus, and he said that "they may have different chipsets. Let me check for you to verify."

1 minute later, then he says "Yes, the reason why XPS 17 will ship out sooner is that it has a different chipset." I dont believe this guy whatsoever! Anywhoo, so my order's still the same. This wasn't a real update, but I just wanted to share my story with you. Maybe someone here could confirm if he was lying to me or not.

It's kinda sad that they're still trying to make bank off of us, especially us aafes customers lolz.

Walk over to Dell and slap them for lying to you....Other than that theres not much you can do.

After all of this, if i didnt want that alienware so bad i would call up and have some very nasty words with Dell :) Ive seriously lost alot of respect for the way they carry out their business.

Definitely. I don't really expect much customer service anyways, since it's outsourced. That's why I'd rather deal with the US reps, cuz they sorta give a damn, or at least make it sound like they do (via pretending of course).

I guess I'll give them a call on Monday...

Anyways my edd has changed from 3/2 to 3/30 but a csr said it may ship on 3/2 and considering the edd seems like it's an automated system it may be true.

Dang. No idea why mine's not changing, considering they already received my money :(

I'll call right now and find out.

EDIT: Called, and dell epp department is closed. Did speak to a regular customer care rep though, and he told me that he still sees my EDD as 4/13. I informed him that my "friends", who ordered on the same day as me had theirs change from 2/16, to 2/15, to 3/3, and yesterday to 3/30. He told me he did not know why mine had not changed, but went on saying that "to the best of (his) knowledge, and looking at the "shipping order" or something, "that there is no delay with your order." He said that to tbe best of his knowledge, the motherboard chips (or ships) have already arrived at their factory. (Ships = boats lolz, or chips = mobos lolz). And then he said that since he sees there "will be no more delays," that my computer may ship out sooner than the EDD. Since the epp department is closed though, I'd have to call on monday. He did also specify that in his experience, sometimes computers ship out "way sooner" than the EDD says. *He had a latino accent by the way, which means he may be from their costa rican offices.*
