Call them and drive to TN for an advance pickup :) Then post pics + vids for us tomorrow lol..one can dream right? I'll be putting up videos of the RGB LED vs the 1080p panel in the Studio XPS 16 so people can see how it compares to a WLED display.

I've done it several times in the past. Told them I would be gone the entire week due to a vacation and needed to come pick it up. They make exceptions and let you get it from the sorting center as long as you have an ID. Sometimes the sender has to okay it as well.

    depends.

Usually they have to make 1 attempt before you can pick it up. Otherwise you need to get Dell to setup the hold at facility.

IMO, just wait until tues. It won't kill ya to wait (and I do understand how it feels lol)

The one that comes with the R2 is a Samsung PM800. I had it in my M15x and it's pretty decent but it has some major issues--TRIM doesn't work properly and the write speeds left a lot to be desired.

The CFFL screen on the M17x was much nicer than the one on my M1730. You should be OK unless you're sensitive to the auto-dim feature. If so complain to get the new screen after it arrives.

The 256GB SSD is the Samsung PB22-J which Dell has been sitting on a proper firmware upgrade for it.

You can't use TRIM in Raid 0 anyway. The latest Samsung drives are shipping with TRIM/GC firmware so at least you will have GC active. Just let your system sit idle for 30 mins each night so it can clean up the junk and keep your speeds up. Personally I found the GC lacking as well and my drive's speed was slowly declining despite letting GC do it's thing.

Ah my old Toshiba HDTV had auto dimming and I hated it. If the CCFL on the M17x is anything like that I'd probably return it right away.

You might want to check out the OCZ Vertex. I have two. The firmware supports trim in windows 7. Mine are still smokin' fast after 4 months on windows 7 64bit.

The auto-dimming feature on TVs is actually better because there are sensors on the TV to adjust brightness based on the amount of light in the room. The auto-dim on the M17x changed based on what was displayed on the LCD so it was pretty useless.

I ordered my M17x-R2 on 1/27/2010, saw it update to In Production on 1/28/2010 which is what Dell's web site currently says, and an EDD of 2/22/2010.

Well, I finally got through to the hidden order status connection. You know the one that doesn't just tell you your order is being processed? It told me that my order was shipped...on 1/28/2010...one day after I placed my order. Hard to believe that can be correct but I sure hope it is! Say it ain't so!

We'll see, as that is hard to believe.

I am on the phone right now because I was trying to call and get the shipping updated, but am on hold waiting. I'll keep you all informed.

The Toshiba I had worked like the M17x. It auto dimmed pictures that were supposed to have a dark background to give a fake impression of blacks. The problem was that any light colors on the screen also got dimmed. The Samsung 52" I had (B750) did the same thing albeit a bit more subtle. I finally got fed up with LCD tv's and went with a Kuro plasma and haven't looked back--best decision I ever made with regards to a TV.

You know a LOT of people are reporting the same thing with recent Dell orders. In the M15x thread, people ordered a new system and got shipping notification the next day. I'm guessing Dell is getting more efficient with recycling canceled orders.

I'm pretty sure the RGB LED will be about 300 nits. Very bright and quite nice.

    ^ Ditto :)

I wasn't very impressed with the 1645's RGBLED. Let's hope the R2's is better (and maybe an LG instead of Samsung).

It will definitely be Samsung. Should also be better than the SXPS 16 one but at the same time it will require some calibrating for photographic use. As a gamer I really don't care, as long as I can balance the contrast/blacks properly with fairly accurate colors, I'll be happy. It's the gamut that I'm really looking forward to because I can spot the differences in WLED displays right away.

I just care about brightness with no washout... Color accuracy is not huge to me ... If its 300 nits it should rock...

Cant wait to hear some honest comments about it ...

I know Witcher hated the old M17x screen so im looking forward to his phone call when it arrives ...

I am also anxious to hear about the noise levels of this machine over the M17x R1 ... Loudest laptop hands down i have ever owned when both GPU fans are going along with the CPU fan... Sounds like a small leaf blower :D.....

Yeah, the screen was def the weakest point in the R1 so I am excited to check this thing out ;)

At bestbuy the macbook pros have very bright colors and deep blacks compared to all the rest of therse laptops. I wonder if they are led backlit? I dont follow Macs. As I walk through BestBuy I always notice the Macs. I hope the R2 will be the same.
