Yeah i dont have high hopes of them putting in quieter fans though one can hope they did....
I could hear the M17x 2 rooms away no problem if you have a game going and even with my headphones on i could hear the fans blazing lol.... Its not the most family friendly machine if your trying to play games around people watching TV etc... Just browsing the web though its quiet...

Well, I bought 1/24 and the ETA is 2/16. I assume it's taking a while since I got the i5 chip. I'm assuming that I'm probably the only on here that did?
-
Yes, I'd say you are the only one that did that! lol
Seriously. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
At least you max out the settings for other options, which is a smart move, which will save you $$$$$ down the line. As for the ATI, you can always add another one later ( It will cost you an arm and a leg). -
Matt I did tha also. I got same cpu. I also got the single vid card. I ordered on 1/24 and I am in boxing stage now. Every post I have made nobody comments on lol. So I hope you read this. By the way my name is Matt also.
-
**edit** I got the i5 540m sorry.
-
sleeyo..how do you like the i5 540m in the Envy? I was going to get thr R1 with the a quadcore but I decide for the R2 due to the screen. I read good things about the 540m. I am not into benchmarking or really hardcore gaming. I like gaming but I dont live for it. I just wanted a really good laptop. You think the single video carde will be ok for most games?
-
Honestly I don't do that much gaming anymore so I figured CPU wasn't that big a deal to keep at the base and no reason to X-Fire since I'll probably end up with the 5870 at some point. Really I just liked the build of the Alienware plus the warranty (since I'm ridiculously rough on computers so the rest will probably end up being warranty "upgrades" if my previous computer luck stays the same).
Plus with the back catalog of games I have yet to play (or finish, like HL2 for example or Guild Wars or Torchlight and then Mass Effect 1/2, and Borderlands) by the time I get around to games that'll actually tax this system I'll be on my way to my next system.
And I just can't justify paying too much over $2k for only a moderate increase in game settings. Plus I'm waiting to see how the G73JH ends up as to whether I'll even keep the system (so the later date isn't such a bad thing in so much as the 21 day return policy is concerned). -
HAHA see nobody ever responds to my posts. Ohh well.
-
I didn't realize anyone else was getting the i5 since I was just doing a quick run through of everyone's signatures. Although the base option seemed to be the one that delayed the shipment according to when I speced out the system before I bought it.
-
Mine is still in build. I ordered on 1/17 and have an EDD of 2/05 with standard 5-7 day ground shipping mind you. My order status still shows the original DVD drive as well. Shenanigans?
-
How long does boxing usually take?
-
I'm in the same boat quail. Even when I called they said it was still on schedule. Either way if its not at least shipped by 2/4, my EDD, ill raise hell over the phone until I get something out of it.
-
About 3 days usually.
-
As long as it takes to pack a plane fly it over here then unload and then slap stickers on boxes ...
Or about 2-4 days -
MOO how will the single 4870 perform. like I said I a not a heavy gamer. However I may try some newer games. My previous laptop was a Asus G51 with with the nvidia 260m. I liked it but I kept wanting the M17X so I sold it.
-
you'll be fine, for intensive games you probably want to set the rez at 1080p instead of 1200p
-
I never met a game on my single GTX 260m that i could not run @ 1200p before with a P8600 so i doubt you will have any issues for a while
-
I found myself sitting at work browsing the forum and wondering why noone is updating their ETA, and then I discovered it is Saturday...
I guess the shipping companies don't work in weekends? Bah, nothing better to do, I'll keep clicking the tracking link today AND tomorrow
-
Dell will post that a system is shipped on a Saturday and Sunday. So keep refreshin!
-
It is already marked as shipped, I just want to see progress in the delivery process
Waiting for the tracking info to change... Not to mention when it says it has arrived in UPS Nice, then I know it will be only minutes away... but that may still be days ahead.
ahhhh, daydreaming... beats the crap out of working

I guess you didn't notice the small font april fools note on the bottom?
-
I was actually going to get the i5 540M at first but with that extra 5% code last week I went ahead and upped it to a i7 720QM and still came under my budget.
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
lol. he got me
-
Shipping eta 2/3.
-
LOL wow. This thread has really slowed down.
-
Everyone is having nervous breakdowns over their systems boxing and/or shipping status
-
I ordered mine 1/21 but it was at end of day, so didn't process til 1/22.
Yea, slowed down... everyone is waiting on theirs.
-
Bored really
... Kinda mad I didn't order the day before -
I am so used to having a laptop in my bedroom, sometimes is too much effort to go to the main PC area lol!
I have an Athlon 64 3500 PC that I used strictly for music production, cubase etc, I ended up bringing it to my bedroom and set it up bedside
It is only for 4 more days till my Alienware kicka$$ lappy arrives
-
Ok I have a question. How would the 4870 compare to dual 260ms? The charge the same for sli 260ms as they do for the single 4870 on the R1. I just wondered. I know I should search but I like to hear from you all here. I never thought I would be so exited to ge a computer. I own a SVT Cobra that is my baby. I spend all my allowed spending money on it. I got it out today due to the mild winter here in my town. I had fun ripping around in it but I still kept thinking aout my new laptop. Man its like Im a kid again.
-
trd1, I know what you mean. I don't have a sports car but recently got a C230 and was excited just to drive it around and own one. Now all I want is that damn M17x and then in a year or two I'll be back to thinking about my dream car (BMW 335i). Yes I'm a German car fan
Nobody builds them quite like they do.
-
Audi's own all German cars. lol
Seriously. I spent 4 years in Germany and those folks look at Audi's like the cream of the crop (and they are).
Now on-topic. Where me M17x???? -
I like the Audi R5 admittedly. But I'd still take a BMW over an Audi.
-
I love my car but I tell my wife all the time I want an M3 real bad. Supercharged Cobra is fun.... really fun but it is still a Ford. I miss the build quality of German cars. I have owned Volkswagens and my wife had a BMW 330i that we traded it for a 2007 Acura TL. I almost bought a 335i. I love turbo and forced induction cars. They have gotten better times with the 335 than the M3 in some tests. Thats alot of bang for the buck. That would be really cool to own a turbo BWM(335i). My wife cant believe that I have been spending more time looking at this forum than my usual SVTperformance.com LOL. Its like Alienware put some kind of spell on there laptops that make grownups act like kids. Now Im starting to think I should have got the daul video card.
-
Why, yes you should have gotten a dual gpu system.
Meh. You seem like you have money so that's all is needed to add a card in the future... -
Trust me, I'm 31 and I love computers as much as a teenager
Once I finish residency I'll finally start making enough money to buy that 335i I've always wanted. You should definitely have gotten dual card, it gives nearly the same performance as a desktop 5850.
-
I dont have alot of money but I have no kids and I have a good job. I just dont like wasting money. I really dont do alot of gaming. I just love the M17X. I cant explain it. So I didnt want to waste money. I know you guys really use these machines. I am more of a casual gamer if that and an internet surfer. So I assume Mine will be overkill for what I do. Howerver I may really get into games now that I have something I can play them on. In that case I would consider adding the second GPU. Is it something I could handle sleeyo?

Heheh. My wife cracked up at that. Ok well then I guess I will do it if I find that I need the extra power. By then the 5870s will be out. I assume you cant run a 4870 and a 5870 in crossfire?
-
Yes, you could handle it.
Dell's service manual are pretty good at explaining things and as long as you take your time you'll be fine. -
No go on mixing different gpu's in crossfire.
But I tell ya what, wait till the 5870's come out and there will be a bunch of good deals on the 4870's on EBay, you can then just pick one up and slap it in
, they should hold you up great, specially if you like you say are a casual gamer...
Edit:
Actually in crossfire you can mix GPU's, it is SLI that cant be done, oops -
Anyone know if production in China continues over the weekend, or do they shut down for the weekend? I'm hoping to go from "build" to "boxing" soon...
-
I am pretty sure that those factories are operated 24hours.
-
Plus they are a day ahead.
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
lol. that's funny
-
I just ordered my M17x today and the EDD is the 4th of Feb. Seems way too fast, but it would be nice.
-
wasn't meant to be.
Should I have said a day ahead of the US? -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
well still funny because if they overnight something from china it gets here the same day that means instant shipping
List everyone M17x-R2 ETA
