Hidevolution were fitting the blue Ray drive themselves! I suspect good old Ted was keeping the other drives to resell. He quote me $200 for the blue ray as an extra.![]()
is this new quicksilver drive better than the ones that they apparantly run out of stock? I'd be very unhappy if they downgraded without letting us know first.
On an entirely seperate note I ordered an M17x (r1 - quadcore) on the 04th Jan and just got an email today from UPS to say it will be here (London) new Thursday. My original eta was 25th Jan so it looks like they are 2 weeks behindplus I cancelled this order 2 weeks ago! Dell really are useless
-
Really!? Ted guaranteed that Dell would fit the blu-ray drive in and that the M17x will come factory sealed :O
Ah that sukcs. I think Dell should open a few more factories so they can cope with high demands when new laptops/desktops are released. -
I wouldn't be happy with some dealer opening up my new system and installing the dvd drive. Especially with the M17x since you basically have to rip apart nearly the entire machine to reach the dvd drive. Yeah it will be sealed alright, he'll package it back up and use his own packaging tape LOL! This may be why they refuse to give you an order number or even invoice. It probably doesn't list the blu ray drive on there. Sounds shady to me, I wouldn't deal with them.
-
haha, i said factory sealed though! ill double check with Ted tomorrow to make sure hes not going to dismantle my brand new laptop!
And yeh you may be right. Thats why they've been trying to make me believe that my order number is internal information that is dangerous for customers to know. -
well dell sent me a blu-ray drive to have it installed
hmm -
oooppppppps don't quote me on that. The way he told me led me to believe that. When I asked him about it he said he would stick it on himself for $200. I literally thought he meant *he* was going to install it. But based on jokers reply maybe he was just going to stick on my original configuration. This must be how chinese whispers start
either way I reckon we will all be waiting around 4 weeks after ordering to get our R2 = Fail
-
I'm going to laugh if the 5870 becomes available before we receive our systems. I'll still keep mine as long as it reaches boxing before then.
-
Haha, that damn Ted charged me $400! I'm going to be having words with him
LOL, that would be hilarious! At least we would be able to test out the LED screen and do a few benchmarks before we send it back
-
Well, all I can say is that if that happens, I hope it happens before the return the laptop for a refund timetable, I would return my M17X R2 and reorder with the new GPUs, even if it means waiting another month... Not worth the hustle of selling the 4870's somewhere and then ordering the 5870's installing etc ...
-
I reckon Dell have planned it out so that the 21 day return policy runs out for the majority of m17x-r2 owners right before the release of the 5870s to decrease the demand
-
I'm tired of RMA'ing and/or selling off new systems. I think the only person who can pull it off so consistently is sleey0. If mine gets here by the ETA, I'm keeping it, 5870 or not. I'll upgrade the GPU when fermi hits or if there is a faster part than 5870 released. -
Same here
I don't even have a laptop at the moment! i'm using my wii and Google g1!
The 4870's will be able to max out any game for the next 5ish months. (my estimate) -
Yep. Will do the same as well.
Is it a big pain to get the cards upgraded if they are released in a few weeks?
That, is to say, they manage to get our notebooks here and release the new cards all before the beginning of march. -
Yeah, you right.
I think I will feel more presure to upgrade once we get the good directx 11 games, Crysis 2 etc. I am sure they will feature directx 11.
Check this small article http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/17327/1/
Speculation says fermi for March... we'll see. -
Well its quite expensive compared to if you just buy the m17x with the 5870s at the time. However you could sell your 4870s for around $1000, then add a bit extra for dell to fit in your 5870s. It will probably take quite a long time, knowing Dell.
-
hmmm, i doubt that. Probably June at the earliest.
-
One thing is fer sure tho... I am going wherever the better FPS and the better eye candy is, either fermi or ATI, no loyalties here
-
i want to order one with the 4870's but i feel like i should wait, i don't know what to dooooooooo. and the 4870's should be good for more than 5 months i hope.
-
There's always going to be the better card around the corner. That's the beauty of technology.
-
There are people on this forum still using 3870's. The 4870's are gonna be good for years. Performance wise you're not going to need to worry about the 5870's unless you're a bench-marker. Get the 4870's and don't worry about the 5870's. Instead wait for the 6870's.

DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT!

Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
You can get a Blu-Ray Drive average for $100.00 on ebay, and put it in yourself. I know you don't want to take apart your system, but you have to anyway because you want to put the best thermal compound on your CPU and GPU. No more excuse for not opening your laptop.
-
Have a link to one? Is it also slot load? -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Yes, it's slot load sata connection. go to ebay and search CA10N. I believe the m17x uses sata connection for the drive if I am not wrong. I doubt the m17x uses IDE.
By the time the members read this post , everyone is going to order one. lol... save one for me... * NOT !!!! * -
Lol. Everyone go buy one gogogogo.
Hopefully i'll be ordering my one in mid Feb if not i'll order it from US. Thats gonna be fun. Lol -
Called in to check status. Say's im in the build stage and expected ship date is 1/29. Ordered 1/14, EDD 2/4.
My system also includes : 1 313-8565 Slot-Load Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW) -
I called the 800 number today and the csr checked my order status. She put me on hold then came back and said my estimated ship date was moved from 2/17 up to 2/12. Then she told she upgraded my shipping to next buisness day at no cost. wierd. So I listed my order below. My dvd player is not the one listed as quicksilver or whatever . So I am wondering how this will play out.

1 Thank you for Purchasing Alienware -
150 Watt adapter.
That's interesting. Did they change it up? -
You get a 150W adapter if the system doesn't have a core i7 + dual graphics cards I believe.
-
Ahh, I see. Kind of dumb because you'll need to buy a new adapter if you install a new cpu or gpu down the line.
Thanks joker

Megacharge Custom User Title
Thats pretty lame.. Another cash grab for Dell like the 2nd hard drive caddy.
-
Yes... Very lame, indeed.
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Yeah, spending more money that way..it's like the scenario of buying a single GPU now and upgrading an arm and a leg for a second one down the road.... -
Just checked order status and it has advanced from build stage to boxing
Ship date Feb 12, I will call tomorrow and try for a NBD upgrade... -
If it hits boxing it's too late to change the shipping, at least that's been my experience. I'm surprised Mandrake and others haven't reached boxing yet. When did you place your order? My EDD is 2/16 yet yours has already hit boxing..hmm. Anyway congrats and be sure to throw us a bone with some pics + divx. -
I used an EPP link that my wife got from her employer, she is a hospital manager, the link took me to dell epp, and our member ID was showing on main page. I configured my M17XR2 and then at check out I logged in to my own dell account, the EPP discount and the additional 5% still showing in shopping cart, so I checked out, and that is pretty much it...
I also found it interesting that none of you ahead of me in the queue had posted your boxing stage.... -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
BajaCapt,
If you are already now just in Boxing, it should not take no more than 5 days to go into shipping. Are you here in the U.S. ? -
Now this is just weird.... my ship date is ETA 02/04... next day delivery and mine is not boxed yet....
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
You should hit Boxing before the end of this week, if they want to meet that ship date line of yours. -
Mine was in boxing 2 days ago (order date 1/16) and had a purolator shipping number for me, today when I checked its in production and the delivery date is now 2/22.
My purolator tracking number gives me a "billing information has been received" message. Im more then confused.
Sweet.....................(sarcasm detector needed) -
my ETA is 2/16. specs in my signature
-
Now that IS whack... I'm just waiting for a cancellation notice or delay since everyone is having so many orders flipped around. Just tooling with an m15x i7 makes me want my final order all the more!
-
its shipped then just wait until the shipping information is updated
If you get the tracking number be happy its going out the door because that EDD from dell means next to nothing -
Yep, I am in San Diego CA.
Just to make sure it wasn't a glitch I just called the 1-800 number and still still says boxing stage with a ship date of February 12. I find it odd for a system to be in boxing for 16 days if estimated shipping date is right...
Its the Alienware twilight zone man
-
People fail to understand that your ESD won't change until Dell actually prints the Fedex label and ships it.
The system doesn't see the difference between boxing and an ESD.
As soon as your boxing stage is completed, which entails Dell recieving the system and shipping it, then your ESD will update.
Not real hard to understand
-
in boxing it take any amount of time. They have to fill a shipment.
Otherwise its WAY to expensive -
I do understand
Been ordering from Dell since I got my new XPS M170 several years ago, (still have it) and a few other systems as well, I also ordered from Alienware before they were Dell...
Just find the whole order status lacking a certain something, accuracy?, anyways, is no big deal really, my dazzling M17XR2 will get here eventually
Thanks for explaining though
On another quick note, I placed my order only on Jan 22nd so I reached this boxing stage fairly quick, I was thinking that maybe has to do with the fact that I left my personalized name plate standard? Did any of you had the plate customized? I wonder if that would take a few extra days.... just a tought -
i placed mien that day as well .... hummm
I am in production -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
BajaCapt,
I ordered the same day you did. * shrug shoulders * -
Moo, Rengsey, did you had your name plates personalized??
List everyone M17x-R2 ETA
