Apple's version of a gaming notebook would not support DirectX because it doesn't belong to them, it would be a generation behind everyone else in technology but cost twice as much. I hate Apple, I can't wait to ditch my iPhone for a WinMo 7 phone.
-
Yeah an Apple gaming laptop would never work. But I just want the build quality.
-
So you want them to sit on hundreds of thousands of dollars (maybe millions) worth of inventory? Good luck with that.
You realize how expensive that would cost? If they did do something like that, expect the price of the laptop to go WAY UP.
Imagine if car companies did that? Hell, people pre-ordered the new Camaro months and months in advance and some didn't see it for quite some time after the first ones were released. This is just how things happen in a supply/demand economy.
Edit: I guess it would be possible to sit on them till they have enough to release, but then you wouldn't be able to customize them. Aka, iPad, iPhone etc. You would just have to buy their prebuilt models and be at their mercy. -
Another "order delayed" email, while i am in boxing.
New EDD now is 3/9. hope they are not serious. -
Brrrrr wrong.. Companies already do exactly that. Especially car companies. They project demand and order components. Do you seriously think that companies that churn out millions of units just wait for orders to come in? Get real...
-
maybe they are trying to lower your expectations by pushing it back, so when/if it comes early you will be overly joyed
-
I was kinda hoping it'll go out of the doors today as 3 days of boxing is the norm right ?
-
It's only day 2 here. I will wait a week and post back on here when my delivery date is going to be.
By any chance, has anyone gotten their M17x R2 and have dell.com still show "in production" or show the estimated delivery date still?
I don't have SSD drives or anything too crazy. I do have an RGB LED in my order though. -
Bro, give me an example? Car companies are the WORST at that. In fact that is why cars sit on lots for months at a time. Cause they build and THEN sell the car, unlike buying this laptop were we CUSTOMIZE it and then they build it to our liking.
Take the camaro again as an example. Much of the demand was the SS model, but you could go to many dealerships and find the V6 model and not the SS model cause they were still filling pre-orders for them. Much like Dell, the build them when the parts COME IN, they don't sit on them.
Think of it this way. What if you paid up front for your M17x, and Dell sat on your money (earning interest) until they had enough parts to fill all the orders. You would be pissed right? That your money is now gone from you and making someone else money. The same can be said of Dell. When they spend money on inventory that isn't earning them money, they are losing money that they could be investing. -
Hey MFractal, for what it's worth, I was delayed an extra week and then the laptop went into boxing (3 days) and then shipped. I ended up receiving it about 2 days earlier then was scheduled. So if you are already in boxing, there is a good chance you'll receive it before the 9th. At least that was my experience.
-
First you say car companies dont do that and now you say they are the worst at it... which is it? Are you just talking just to hear your own voice?
-
No, for new models, car companies are just as bad as dell, or worse. They don't stock pile parts till they have enough orders, they build them as the parts come in. They can't afford to have millions of inventory sitting in their factory. And BECAUSE they are pumping out cars, and not sitting on inventory, cars that aren't as popular just sit on car lots costing dealers crap tons of money.
Again, I can't think of any time where car companies wouldn't release a car till they had enough supply for demand. It would just be too expensive.
But thanks for providing an example
Good example: When the Cadillac CTS-V was released, only one was delivered to my state. (bought by a co-worker of my wife) It was about two weeks later till the next one was delivered. If what you are saying is true, why would they not just hold onto these 65k vehicles and release them when they had more buyers?
Anyway, this is getting off track. All I am saying is Dell can't be assumed to sit on massive amounts of inventory and STILL offer customization. It's just too expensive. Maybe they could go the iPhone/iPad route and offer 3 models, a base, medium, loaded model. That way they could still sit on some inventory, but customization would be gone
-
I think Apple just doesn't like to push limits. Hence why the build quality is there. Because the hardware isn't really all that high end.
Anyone can make a high quality BUILD laptop. They just have to use slower parts. -
+1. Apples products are slower, more expensive, alot hotter, and they definitely don't push the hardware limits like many PC manufacturers do. But man are the sexy and the build quality sure feels great. From what I have read about the m17x though, it appears that build quality is pretty solid with it as well.
-
Yeah, I'll definitely take my Alienware over any Apple laptop on the market. I even prefer the look of the Alienware...but just my opinion of course.
-
Wow, I just checked your sig for ordered/shipped date and realized I might be in for a super long wait for my M17x.
-
Yeah unfortunately there have been some delays based on parts, order mess-ups, etc. Hopefully Dell is beginning to sort all of that out so all the new folks won't have to go through all the pain and suffering that us early folks did. Let's hope that the dam has opened and the laptop shipments start flowin'
-
Well checked the order line today. It is interesting that one number tells me it is in production (I am guessing this line is the same as the website which goes from that to shipped) and the other line tells me it is in boxing. day 3 for me in boxing so hopefully it gets shipped out soon.
-
That's fine, if you choose option 3 it'll tell you in production.
If you choose 4,2,1,1 it'll tell you in boxing - same for me. -
I gotta say I fully expect to be in boxing till Friday or so.
As an aside, this 2004 article just makes me laugh compared to Dell today.
Living in Dell Time -

For my fellow iPhone Users
(800) 283-2210,,,4,,,,,2,,,,,,1,,1,,,,,,,,"order number"
Copy and paste the above into a new contact on your phone with all the commas and numbers with your order number at the end.
I got tired of typing in all the info all the time so i cooked this up and wanted to pass along
-
Yea, 4 days lead time would be amazing, try 30-40 now. Thats a factor of 2.5 they have failed by
-
+1, I approve of this message.
-
Yeah I know how you feel, but it is definitely worth the wait.
-
Wow that is epic. But it didn't progress my order any

Mine just shipped as well!
I've got a fedex tracking number and everything. I should receive it tomorrow or Friday since I have NBD delivery.
If people care how long boxing took, mine shipped around 48 hours after it hit the boxing stage.
Now if they release the 5870 within my 21 day return period, I'll send it back and prepare myself for another long wait. -
grats dudes. Christmas in march
Couple that with the Bios fix and this has been a good week for alot of you
-
@promind, thanks for the rep
, i seem to have spent all mine for today though
did you get the tracking yet ?
mine says unavailable -
I hate all of you damn it im still on the phone ordering again
-
My EDD is now updated to tomorrow, but the tracking info says "Data temporarily unavailable". Vradev, did you find your tracking no. on the order status page or somewhere else?
-

My rep sent me an email with the number but when I track it in fedex it is still unavailable. It will become available tonight or tomorrow morning once fedex updates their database.
UPDATE: I just checked my tracking number and is now available on the fedex tracking website. My estimated delivery is tomorrow 3/4 by 3pm.
-
Nice, now people have your customer number and order number. Time to make a phone call to dell to give them the new updated shipping address.
-
Well with all the excitement about shipping I went and checked my account page and sure enough my status has changed to SHIPPED.. They updated my EDD to 3/4 which will make me very happy.
Wonder if the new units shipping this week will already have the new bios... -

-
