alright-alright , it was a joke about the ALX -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Naw, I am going to hold off a little, just to see how the i7 plays out in the next few months. The M17x will still be available, and maybe this GDDR situation will turn favorable.
-
My friend got his today and they are GDDR3 cards. He is sending it back on Monday for a refund. I feel a lawsuit coming soon.
-
The ALX is a beast, but its also a boat load of coin!
-
For those of you who do have the ATI option, see this link for the driver:

Nice! Thanks BatBoy!
-
Let us know if the cards says GDDR5 after installing the driver
-
But I doubt it.
I'm downloading them as we speak. I bet Dell's servers being hammered right now... the speed is ~150 KBPS. -

dudes, chilluks !! It's been confirmed by Dell's upper management that they have been DDR3 from they day one.... Sorry, can't really release the source ...
at least for now though -
-
-
I really feel for you guys, honest!
-
-
Ddr3 ? I'm on my iPhone n I can't see it
-
Yep.
I'm just going to get my $100 back, since I like the cards. I don't see a point of throwing a fit, sending the laptop back, then ordering another one with the 280s. -
he emailed me back, the cards ARE GDDR3 period, he said they were originally set to be gddr5. dell was simply going on the info from ati they were given of what would be on the final cards. he said so far the info he is getting is it was not in fact dell who pulled the switcho but ati promising dell gddr5 and they are in fact gddr3 cards, in checking with original paperwork the were supposed to be set to be gddr5. that is why dell posted the info it is what they were given spec wise from ati. he pulled one and said YES they are gddr3. he said dell will issue a full refund w/out restock for those promised gddr5. he will be contacting upper channels to inform them if they do not already know...
-
$100? guess we'd have to see how well these cards do anyhow.
Though if I ordered GDDR5, and got GDDR3 instead, I'd be pissed; plus I'd ask for the price difference between that and 260m Sli back.... -
i know im waiting or ill go with 280's
-
-
That answer is a cop out, z.
ATi doesn't make these cards for Dell anyway so it sound like a good ole bait and switch by Dell.
I have no doubts that Dell intended to use GDDR5 but they neglected to change the pricing once they switched to GDDR3. Sounds crazy, but I guess they were hoping no one would realize it. -
lol...really who knows at this point man. It sounds ridiculous and shady. My father used to date an executive VP* of a fortune 500 company and I've heard some ugly warroom stories of shady backroom dealings and payoffs and the corruption she dealt with on a daily basis. Who knows what happened here, its way to vague and confusing to make out who pulled the fast one here. Heck NVIDIA could've paid off an executive to order DDR3's instead of DDR5's for all we know.
EDIT my bad she was a CEO of a non profit after she quit being a VP, got my facts a little hazy -
I would still stick with the ATI cards be it GDDR3 or not .. DX10.1 support is very nice and they are already just as fast as the 280s.. Given to the right capable person they will surely be even faster
.... G92 old and crusty(trusty) or ATI using much newer tech.. Not a tough choice for me
...

As far as customer service goes, I've thankfully only reached helpful people. My refund is already in process, and they were courteous enough to call/email me as each step was taken. -
A let down for sure but still nothing to be depressed about if you infact have them on order or own them already... No one has posted squat beyond a vantage benchmark... No Crysis,Farcry2,Resident Evil 5,Devil May Cry 4 bleh..
-
-
so are they going to be Gddr5 zfactor, I am willing to wait a bit if the gddr5 cards are coming.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
come on. we are all sad that the 4870's aren't gddr5 but let's be happy that the m17x does support sli/crossfire and if you don't like one you can't get the other.
on top of that the but of them are very close in performance so it's not like we are missing out anything. excpet the price which is only 100 dollar difference. we just want to see who comes out on top.
so we should get to benchmarking. i think 3 people on here has the cards now right? -

If I had received my M17x with GDDR3, you know I would be blow'in gaskets everywhere, and no way would I have settled for a $100 compensation. I still believe those cards should be priced less than the GTX280m cards. Yes, I realize the ASUS GDDR3 4870's were only 512mb, but look at how they were priced. I do not believe the doubling of the 4870's GDDR warrants the nVidia 280m pricing that Dell is asking. I was willing to pay their premium for GDDR5, but not GDDR3. IMO, Dell should be compensating a tad more..... that's all.
-

Yeah the pricing is totally out of whack considering Mobile ATI cards are supposed to be cheaper in general.. Had they been DDR5 like you said the price would have been justified but in this case absolutely not.. I would not have taken $100.00 compensation either.. Getting $100 for someone pulling a fast one on you is not what i call fair .. Now $300 sounds about right to me ... -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Those being compensated for a mere $100, are still over paying in my view. As sleey0 points out, where is the adjustment in pricing here?
(Similar to how QX9300 pricing has come down, yet Dell/Alienware is still asking a $1000 premium.)
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
-
Simply tell them the price should be similar to the 260 SLI.
-
what is the actual cost of the 4870m?
edit:
nvm, it cost about the same as a 280m, but far less than a 9800m gtx
so trying to get 300 bucks out them will be like trying to pull teeth.(but not saying you can't try. i know i would)

$100 more than the 280M SLI. $700 upgrade I think.
