I had an M17x R1 with 4870's and the QX9300, but sold it two weeks ago prepared to order the R2 with LED and i7 920. Now Im going to hold out for the 5870's.

I had a m1730 gathering dust, and I pulled it out and operated on it today. Installed dual 500 gig 7200.4 drives, and it has an X7900 Core 2 Duo OC'd to 3.0ghz. It also has dual 8700 GTs (meh) and I OC'd those too.

The good news? I have a 1920x1200 17" putting down just over 10k on 3dmark06 to get by on until the 5870's come out :)

Sometimes its fun to pull stuff outta the closet, hop it up like its an old Ford, and limp by until the new hardware is available!

I wouldn't count on seeing it in the near future. I was going to sell my new M17x-R2 and wait until I realized how bad the ATi shortage is. Clevo is barely scrapping enough units to build their systems, so is Asus and with Dell being a much larger company, they would have to wait until TSMC can start pumping out 5870m's in large quantities before offering it since they typically buy inventory in real time rather than stock up. That means we're looking at late April or even late May before units start shipping. They might offer it up for sale sooner than that but it's pointless if you have to wait 1-1.5 months to get your hands on it.

The only reason i got a M17x r2 was because i was tired of waiting for Mac to update their outdated lines. well that and because alienware has the bling bling.

Was going to wait it out for the 5870s but decided not to. I can't handle waiting till May to get another notebook for a minor upgrade in speed.

yea thats how i felt about waiting for a mac. The pro was suggested to update late january at the Apple keynote, but nothing came up besides the Ipad, supposedly the next update is june which is good for me because the college program in transferring to requires a 15 inch macbook pro. But i dont regret my purchase I love this laptop. It may be heavy as hell but it does what i demand of it.

Notebookcheck is know for unreliable information and benchmark.

On the other hand there are plenty of bench here done by members having the cards.

And yea i know that notebookcheck isnt reliable but it gives an idea plus a nice comparison chart to look up the specs.

I had the the same theory that we won't see the 5870 on dell's website in the near future but there were few, supposedly, reliable sources here on NBR saying that the cards will be offered by the end of March, which is next week. I hope these sources are correct. We'll just have to wait 1 more week and see it it's true or not.

There's a good chance we might see them by end of March/early April. The problem is the lead time which is already at one month and will probably be as bad if not worse w/the 5870m.

They will probalby work but it will cost you a fortune to upgrade and it will be few months, once they become available, before dell offers them as upgrade parts.

Yes, I agree but still, waitng for a system that has already been ordered is a bit better for me than just waiting on a certain upgrade to become available. In the first case, you know for sure that it will be 1-2 moths wait at the worst, while in the second case it can be tomorrow bit it can also be 6 months. It's the uncertainty that makes the waiting worse for me.

I don't want to create a new thread but did anyone notice that the 1200p screen is no longer offered CCFL which is good news I guess.

Also, the R2 cannot be configured with a second hard drive unless it is a raid config. Why would they take that option away???

Some1 i think joker posted about the ccfl screen being gone and the rgb being 50$ cheaper unfortunately i stumbled upon this forum 1 week to late and cant return mine computer for a rgb one. as far as the hard drive option its cheaper to install you self as long as you dont have to call and get your caddy. Which doesnt matter they ship overnight for free. my r2 was missing it and they sent the first one without the interposer so i had to call again. which was a inconvenience having to wait 25 mins to talk to some each time.

Oh i meant to say it is all free and they ship overnight. The alienware guy told me the r2 are supposed to come with both even if you get one hard drive only.
just gotta call. alienware and say my system didnt arrive with both caddys and make sure they send the interposer as well.

going from 1 500gb hd to 2 on Dells web site is $75.00 extra, why not just get it with the system? Sure you can save maybe $10.00 but why bother, and it would be under warranty too.

Not so fast, look at all the sales on the M17x's going on. Dell puts on huge sales right before it introduces a new update becasue they know once they do update the config nobody will buy the old configs.

So the sales going on now are a sure bet that an update is imminent.

i got 23% today off an outlet M17x. That was about 50% off retail. I was going to wait for an R2 5870 but this was too good of a deal. details in sig....2900 inc tax with 3yr complete care

My reliable source said that Dell is all ready to go with the 5870's.

Supply is the only thing stopping the release. As most of us here know, Dell doesn't list an item on the configurator unless they have a steady stream of the part.

Clevo is having the same supply issues as well.

That's precisely why I ended up keeping my exchange. Getting a 5870 in the R2 isn't difficult at all and AW has probably been ready for a long time (or A02 might already support it). The problem is supply, AMD can barely meet desktop demand let alone have spares for notebooks. Even if it becomes available, they will probably only have enough for one run before it goes into back order for a month or longer.

Anyway, we shall wait and see how things develop in the next week or two...

I have only said once or twice, that I wanted 5870's, and I didn't even mention in what specific time frame this should be.

But I just got mail from my Rep, in which I was told; that he would be bringing out another discount offer when the 5870's are configurable. And this should be within 2 weeks. So this is no speculation, they are comming soon... :D

That would be a real joke!

i wonder if the 5870s from Alienware is going to be better than Asus' 5870. since alienware's 4870s were better than Asus' 4870s.

Any non-Asus 5870 will be better as Asus seems to make there own cards (not standard shape) and QC seems to be lacking.

The G73 was having plenty of GPU issues and I don't see the same problems with the W8x0 line from Clevo.

I talked with a rep today that states the 5870's should be available for order in the next week.

Then we got disconnected and I called back, got another rep which said they had no information whatsoever.

The later one even told me after I questioned him that I should not expect new GPU until the summer.

    Not sure who to believe.
