. The 1070 to be honest is also too powerful for 1080p ^^, so you're good to go with a 1070 it's really future proof !
As now manufacturers can choose the TDP (watt consumption of the gpu), Alienware went with 180W for the Nvidia 1080, this is INSANE and it's absolutely not made for 15" laptops.
To paint you a picture : many 15" laptops come with a 180W supply for everything not just the GPU ^^. the GL502VS with 1070 from asus is shipped in France with a 180W adapter (stupid choice) -

As well, the battery life Alienware advertises is the best case scenario, so with G-Sync, it'll probably be less. -
88 C ouch -
Well Im amazed I didnt think it would be as **** cooling as reaching 88c even my aw17 with the worst card ever created 880m doesnt even reach 82c so I guess they still suck maybe even more than ever before and this is 1070 gtx so imagine what temps we will get with the 1080gtx .. very very disappointed

CPU temp conspicuously absent... -
Well, i guess the 1070 in AW has a higher tdp compared to other 1070
, after all the 1080 is 180W.
But yeah, they overhyped their cooling design OR they put toothpaste in place of proper thermal paste, because yeah, you pay 2000$ + but they need to scrap 0,5$ on the thermal pasteit's THE most important part, why spend a lot in r&d for cooling if in the end you put toothpaste ?
And it doesn't look easy to to repaste you have to remove everything...
reconsidering my purchase maybe will switch to a P650RS-gAwhispersecho likes this. -
Would like to see an actual owner repaste and post detailed temps. -

Their r&d for cooling is based on the thermal paste Dell already have deal on. Thermal paste are being bought in large quantities. Why use a special thermal paste for AW, when all other Dell computers can use the same ****? Cheaper to obtain in large quantities. Why should Dell use a <better> more expensive thermal paste only for their Aw machines? Money is money, Although there is only talk about a few cents
Edit. @rinneh I thought more about this, as you now going to re-paste.Last edited: Oct 1, 2016 -
will repaste mine IC7 FOR SURE because anyway will have to open it to add my SSDs and the manual is already online, but i ordered mine the minute it was online in France and they told me it was out of stock (I'm probably the first purchaser in FR/UK haha) and when i asked them via chat to give me more infos about why no stock they seemed totally lost...and didn't really care about my order.
I can't understand how it's out of stock, maybe U.S orders ? but they must have kept some barebones for Europe..
that was ridiculous, how can a product not released yet be out of stock ? backorder of course, I'd have understood that,...but (i think) they cancelled my order and told me it was out of stock...OoLast edited: Oct 1, 2016 -

Generally you should repaste anyway, because you can't be sure how the factory pasting was done. Use IC Diamond, GC Extreme or Kryonaut. Swap the Thermal Pads for good ones, at least Phobya 7w/mk, and tweak the fan tables.
If temps doesn't improve afterwards, you can throw your rig out of the windows due to crappy cooling solution.
My 2cents! -
........Never mind....

Don't you have to remove the motherboard, to repaste the GPU?
That's not exactly the type of operation I like to perform on a brand new laptop.Djangi likes this. -
It's like Apple machines. Almost impossible to clean inside and re-paste.

The new ones seem a Bit less complicated to dissamble. At least u dont have to remove the keyboard.

if any of u owns an alienware 17 with gtx 1070 confirm the temps reaching 88c ? we need someone guys alienware is taking so damn long to do a damn test and apparently when Umar done it is completely rubbish and I will never buy a laptop with a ****ty cooling that lets the gpu reaches 88c !!! and it doesnt even consume that high wattage my 880m consumes even more and I have way lower temps max is about 77c :/

Not sure if That benchmark is stressing the CPU and thus preventing the system from heating up.
The MSI, cannot comment about that since it might be standing on a laptop cooler for example.
But in this review the MSI titan has a GPU temp of 75C under load http://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GT73VR-6RE-Titan-Notebook-Review.172916.0.html
The best cooled 1070 I came across is actually an Acer.....
So yeah lets await the reviews with the exact same test to see how it performs.

Ok Umar told me something very weird he said that he did Furmark and Prime95 test burn-in and he only got the gpu to 84c while overwatch got to 88c ? Yep thats the weird part anyway he requested a new unit to do a real test this time so lets hope we r wrong -

Warframe 4K (or 4K DSR) with Ultra quality - can be done in the training mission (275w)
3DMark Firestrike Ultra stress test (260w)
Odd game Warframe is, I never thought I'd see my GPU drawing that much power from a F2P game (it doesn't look very good either).
For loading the CPU I would recommend OCCT. Setting use CPU:OCCT, Infinite, 64 bits, and Large data set. -
Damn, with that much heating really is the deal breaker for me.
I will wait for mor review though.
Maybe looking for the refub 980m plus the GA when needed is the way now. -

I really cant believe that they are so hard cheating by telling us they got a new cooling Solution etc.
I was/am a big Fan of alienware... i ordered the 15 because i thought it will be much cooler than the prev. Gen. Pretty disapointing to See that its even worse .
I will Test the new 15 if it arrives and return it if they really lied about the coolingsmoking2k and Rengsey R. H. Jr. like this. -

Not surprised.
Alienware is not Alienware anymore, it's just Dell. They took a niche, enthusiast-grade product that dominated the market, and destroyed it by turning it into a streamlined, disposable, mass-produced product.
Hopefully, one day, someone at Alienware will wake up. There's still time.Last edited: Oct 2, 2016Awhispersecho, smoking2k, CaerCadarn and 1 other person like this. -

A series of videos on AW17 have been uploaded Chinese language with all the benchmarks and temps.

If I'm seeing this right that's 60C gpu under furmark, 90C cpu with aida? Kinda hard to see on my phone screen.
-
Watch the disassembly of the laptop and damn I have to say. It's one well designed chassis from a technical standpoint. No space has been wasted. Very nice to see as a designer.
The temps seem to be very reasonable too during real life usage. I see him playing The Division which is quite a heavy game and the temps hover around 68~70c. Very good.
Cant wait to get my hands on one of these units. -
