what does tpm do?

I don't know how it is in the US, but in the EU you have a legal right to return any internet purchase for 14 days after delivery without any obligation to say why you don't like it. You don't even have to call Dell, you put the laptop back into the box and the shipping label on top and off you go to the nearest UPS or DHL drop off point.
-
you don't get charged for shipping right?
the only issue is that how much restocking fee some companies have -
How did you get it so cheap? If I do that configuration I get 2400$
-
I googled it and found both official Dell statements that they didn't have it as well as people claiming it did.

In the EU restocking fee is not allowed by law and return shipping has to be paid by the seller.
-
I just spoke to them thru chat and spoke to them nicely

wish we have that law in the us
razer charges restocking fee on their craptops, guess I'll never do business with them -
You're lucky to still have such an option. Dell decided that customer service is redundant in The Netherlands. The consumer phonenumber directs you to the chat and chat directs you to a faq page which only contains phonenumbers that are not applicable to (non-business) consumers.

So Dell doesn't bother to implement TPM chips for the new models because this feature isn't meant/useful for Gaming books? Oh" well. Same philosophy as they had when they said raid functionality wasn't needed for laptops meant for gaming. I'm not surprised.Mr. Fox likes this.

Not having TPM would be annoying. Even the Inspiron 15 7000 or XPS 15 has it.
-
Just asked dell support about the 120Hz release date:
"There will not be any option to select it, it is by default 120 HZ for a FHD display"
Is it out?? -
Whatever their best is. Would be nice to have some stock and overclocked Cinebench, wPrime, 3DMark 11, Fire Strike, Sky Diver, Time Spy and 3DMark Vantage results for reference.
Unless this is something they started doing on the BGA machines, they never had that before. I always disable that in the BIOS on my Clevos because I don't have any use for it. I wish they didn't even have it, but I know some people want Clevos for business machines and the encryption and security features can offer some value to people what care or need it. I think it's a waste, personally, unless you really need it.Last edited: Oct 11, 2016 -
Some of that may be just luck. Some sales reps offer better deals than others. In the past some Alienware customers haven't been able to negotiate a good buy, so they told the rep to forget it and then called and spoke to another rep and got a much better deal.GTO_PAO11 and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

True that. It's mostly trial an error. If the sales rep is stingy, just end the chat and try later.
I was offered first 2900 with warranty premium for AW15 and 4k.lol

As far as I know, TPM was never offered on Dell Alienwares (though I seriously wish they had....). Not really fair to knock Alienware for something they never had to begin with.
-
Dell may have the opinion that gaming laptops should not be used for more than entertainment. Remember Dell sells other models more suitable for professionals. Anyway, I do not use this safety feature, but laptops in 2016 should have it as an opportunity for those who are forced to use such a feature. Also gaming console Nor has this safety feature that I know.Djangi likes this.

They seem to forget that gaming laptops are also used by game developers like yours truly.

For those who would like to know. The 1st delivery of new AW do not have that heat sink over the SSD.
-
No prob. Had the same experiences. It is really difficult to get into contact for some reason through the website. But I sent Dell a message on Facebook and they gave me these numbers.
-
The top config would be 1070/6820HK until november -
Maybe just wait until November. Or get one now with 1070, do all of your benching and return it and get another one in November with 1080, then bench it and return that one.
Not only would you be able to compare Alienware performance to the other brands, but you could have some nice examples pitting Alienware 1070 against Alienware 1080.
Why? I was always very glad Alienware did not have TPM. Do you have some unusually sensitive data that needs encrypted protection? I cannot identify any reason to have it otherwise. I wish Clevo offered systems without TPM. I would love to pay less for not having functionality that I don't want. One less thing that needs to be disabled for me.Last edited: Oct 11, 2016Papusan likes this. -
I'll do that. -
Oh snap, you can do that? I meant getting the unit now then after a month call Dell to replace it?Mr. Fox likes this.
-
No, return it for a refund during the grace period, not get Alienware to replace it. They will not do that.
@Mobius 1 has a hobby of buying laptops, testing them and then sending them back for a refund. Kind of like a free road test on a car you have no intention of buying, except he does temporarily tie up his money. -

My M17 shipped out Today. It should be here sometime next week
-
Ok, so now we have claims here as well that AWs does have TPM and also that they never had it. Seems reasonable that one of those claims are wrong

The newer (BGA) versions may. I don't have a clue about that. The pre-BGA models did not. TPM is not important for a high performance notebook that is being used for the purposes intended. TPM could have some application for a system being used for a business purpose where mission-critical, financial and/or sensitive data needs to be protected in a dangerous environment, especially if hardware theft or corporate espionage is a risk.wickette likes this.

My AW 17 R3 (BGA) has TPM 2.0. Microsoft must have put pressure to make it default on most products from major manufacturers. Honestly, it's best to have it than to have no option to use more advanced security features. These notebooks are good for more than just gaming, after all.
-
My Alienware M14x didn't have it also but that was in the win7 era. The new Inspiron 15 7000 and XPS 15 have it. I think like you said win10 makes this a default option. Win10 also seems to use it for passwords.
Also I keep seeing it on the intel processor specs also. Not sure if it's on the motherboard or intel processor.

How does the production of Dell work? My new 15 seems to be in production since yesterday and has a UPS tracking number, but the the number is not know to UPS. Do they assign the shipping labels first and build the machines then?
How long did it take for you guys?Last edited: Oct 12, 2016improwise likes this. -
I searched their manual. There seems to be TPM option in BIOS.improwise likes this.
-
The 1st delivery has PM951 instead of Liteon SSD in them.

DDR4 2666 is from Micron
-
i had the EXACT same anomaly ^^. But worst, the ups number is for a parcel that was delivered...march 16th 2016, just ignore it.
I'm still in production, but I really think the shipping will be this week
.
Actually when they ship the M15 they will give you a receipt (because they take money before shipping for some cases like Paypal) and a new real, UPS code
.
Let's hope it's sent today !Mr. Fox likes this. -
Hello
What's the best option at the SAME PRICE between the AW15 1070GTX 8GO ram and no ssd, against the msi gt72vr 6re - 1070 gtx, 8go, 128ssd without windows, gsync 75hz (87 % noteboocheck) (refurbished but an extended garantee to 2 years) for desktop replacement ?
Thx -
Patiently waiting for the 120hz displays! ahh!
-
The GT72VR is much thicker, has no optimus (or any way to disable the GPU) and has no TB3, but has an MXM slot for the GPU.
It is essentially a question of taste and the question what do you want to do with it besides gaming. -
It may be premature ... but I'll bet the GT72VR is *much* better at cooling ... I love the new Alienware chassis but I've some doubts about it running long gaming sessions without throttling due to heat issues ... but then again, may be premature.
Anxiously waiting for some in depth AW17 pascal reviews... it's either a MSI GT73VR 1080p or an AW 17 1440p for me. -
Does this mean that you have now had one delivered to you? If not, what is the source?

No me, but quite a lot of Chinese.

A lot of new info coming out.
-
You and me both brother.

My order says that "Your custom-built item is complete." Hopefully it will ship soon, though it still estimates Oct. 24 - Nov. 01
