After having just taken this thing apart screw for screw I can say for certain that this thing is very well built. You know me...if I see BS I'll call it out and just say it the way it is.![]()
The build quality and engineering of the new AW is no joke. It's the real deal.

And I don't know how many times I can point out that I agree that it's a QA issue (although, not exclusively a QA issue). The only point that we disagree on is how critical of an issue that is.
Well, personally I disagree with that. Dead machines are obvious warranty issues, but high temps aren't. Dell are generally not going to send a tech out to deal with 90C CPU temps as long as it's still working, which could leave a lot of people very disappointed.
Having said that, my point throughout this is that QA issues can be resolved. Engineering issues can't. As long as the machine has solid engineering, then it's basically never going to be a bad purchase. People have been concerned with the thermals for several days now, given just how common the issue of high temps has been. If it's simply a case of bad thermal paste (which it does seem to be) then it's far less serious as that can be easily dealt with (at least, relatively easy, for those willing to get their hands dirty). If it were an issue with the cooling system (as many other Pascal laptops have) then that's a lot more serious.wickette likes this. -
To be honest and this is just my experience speaking, crappy thermal compound that results in bad temperatures, yet 'NORMAL' temperatures (within intel limits and no throttles) is not something any manufacturer will care about.
Only intermediary resellers will care Xotic, Obsidian, XMG etc. -

So while cleaning up I just left it on...2 Hours Later...Nothings changed...I would say: "TEST -> PASSED."

Next question is going to be max stable overclock
Looking forward to future results

Thx.
Many non-alienware users are crazily blaming the serial cooling design. Some of them are saying this refresh will be as good as junk. You result is truely valuable for those frightened guys who are considering or waiting for their new laptop.iunlock likes this. -
15R3 - 88 was just the peak. Normally it was <70C and occasionally <80C.
Battlefield 1 runs almost always at 60FPS at 1080p in ultra + 120% supersampling. What a gameAttached Files:

Ah yes...that claim is officially debunked haha.
I'll be uploading a 3 Hour Run here shortly just to nail the coffin shut. -
Definitely. Looking forward to that as well. I ran 40x on all cores last night just fine with touching anything else.
Will just have to see if this chip is a silicon lottery winner.... -
On the back of this I'm about to pull the trigger on a 17 incher.
Funnily enough the base model in the UK is the most appealing to me, 6700 hq with the RX470 (believe this is desktop version).
No reviews for the 470 version anywhere but I'm a fairly light gamer, XCOM 2, TotalWar WH, Football Manager (no FPS). 1060 is £100 more, don't think I need + you end up with that tobi eye tracking nonsense which I don't want.
Am I good to go with the 470 version? -

Is the new AW cooling system a gimmick? - NOPE.
All rise...Case closed.

Yikes...no mate
Not the 470...
Go for at least the GTX 1070 if you are opting for the 17R4.ThatOldGuy likes this. -
Really? For a 1080p screen?
Monies tight.
Couple of years down the line I'll add the GPU dock. -

Hold out for the GTX 1070 if you want to play XCOM 2 in Ultra settings. Neither the bAMD 470 or GTX 1060 can. It will also give m ore life for future gaming (XCOM 3?)
For the price (+$290) you are getting a 45% power increase -
I cant view the above images,
i have used 3 different browsers, 4-5 different countries (VPN) and 3 different network providers.
Can u upload the images in any sharing website and post the link here,
i think its a notebookcheck bug.
I have tried your other threads as well, same things happens in this post ( it is specific to this post and the next one, below, only) -
I cant view this image as well, but apparently other images except these two posts are visible.

I've got the 15r3 coming next week.
I ordered it with the UHD panel but from what I've been reading it's the poor UHD screen they used in the R2.
The R1 used a LQ156D1JW02 panel which was amazing when I had it, would it be possible to replace the R3 one with that panel, I've seen some online for sale.
Do you guys think it's worth the hassle? -
Thanks for the heads up. Just fixed them all...can you check now and confirm?
Cheers -
Does repasting void the warranty?
-
It voids the warranty? *hint hint
- What they don't know won't hurt, however...
I've never had an issue throughout all the years and many can say the same. Most really don't care.Djangi likes this. -
the R3 has JW04 with 72%NTSC whereas JW02 on R1 has 100% adobe. But dell doesn't use those high quality screens anymore.
You can obviously replace R3 screen with JW02 from R1 both being submodels of LQ156D1. And fit the JW04 from R3 in R1. -
Yes , its working now.
-
But the 17 UHD with GTX 1080 will have 100% adobe with LQ173D1 (SHP1446)
-
Any proof? -
Does anyone know which panel comes with the 15 inch 1080p config? What is the color accuracy?

Thanks, that doesn't look any better than the uhd panel. I just want my R1 panel back.
I can salvage it from my broken R1 but that will probably be quite a hassle due to the gorilla glass.

So what was the max CPU temp during that OCCT run? (sorry, graphic came through real bad on my computer) ...
-
Since your R1 is not antiglare, its not worth it to replace the antiglare R3 with the glossy screen.
And becuase of the thinner bezel it might not fit either.Last edited: Oct 23, 2016 -

The glass is for touch input. The colors are great but it's more reflective than anything else in the entire galaxy. Pretty annoying in light environments and useless in most public places.

Anyone have a 17 with a 4K panel yet?

I thought I heard the 4k screen was the same as the R3.

So long as you do not damage your system in the process of repasting it does not.
This is why if you are new to this I would not suggest LM but rather go for Gelid Extreme.
It is the best non LM paste and is not conductive at all.temp00876, iunlock, Djangi and 1 other person like this. -
That's true! Don't mess up with conductive pastes like CLU, Conductonaut or Phobya Liquid Metal, if you are new to this! Get some experience first with GC Extreme or (better) Grizzly Kryonaut.

Not to unnecessarily play the Devil's advocate but I call voodoo on that CPU load temp ... (unless I'm just totally mis understanding things here) ...
You are either not stressing the CPU at all or straight up fabricating numbers. If Alienware had succeeded in creating The Unicorn Cooling(tm) system? Then I still think a *really* good CPU MAX load temp would still be in the upper 70's, low 80's ... but 47C? ... LOL ... that's more like an idle temp ...
Just about *all* of the new Pascal laptops are seeing some CPU throttling ... a repaste is certainly required (always) but it's not going to net you 30C drops in temps. LMFAO!! ... repaste might get you from 98C down to 90C at the max end of things ...
Sorry but 47C at load? No way ... (unless you've looped some water in to the equation ... or nitrous) ...
Still waiting for accurate AW17 temps yo! -
I was gonna get grizzly kryonaut then I read that the kryonaut is better for the short term and if you want a paste that lasts longer, Gelid Extreme or ICD is better?? Can someone confirm???
-
ThatOldGuy Notebook Virtuoso
As someone who has seen many professional photoshops, I can tell you at the least that is not the case here. All other variables I don't know, but Iunlock doesn't seem to be trollish to me. We can guess that he won the silicon lottery too until others have similar posted results. At any rate the GPU temps are in line with other new AW systems -
All three pastes are very good choices! I'm using Kryonaut since eight months without degradation in performance nor temps.
ICD can be a bit finicky as it's a bit sticky and you have to use a lot of alcohol/arctic cleaner before wiping it gently off.
But if you're facing a warped heatsink, ICD is best! -
You should re-paste every 6-9 months, anyway. Especially if you're an avid gamer. Think of it as like changing the oil in your car more often if you drive a lot.
ICD will do just fine. It may be 3C~ less than the best Liquid Metal alternative, but is much simpler to apply and remove. The high viscosity of it allows for easier & cleaner application. -
I felt bad in the posting but that's just not physically possible ... (CPU load temps in the 40's) ... thanks for the candor ... I appreciate it.
-
Anyone know when the 15" 120hz panel will come out with the i7 6820hk and the killer 1535? Messaged @aw_umar on twitter but never heard back from him.
Based off the temp pictures, the new heat sinks are amazing once you get the thermal paste right. Can't wait to get my hands on the 15.

This may not be the best thread to ask this, but is it a bad idea to purchase a 15/17 with an Nvidia GPU and then use the graphics amp with an AMD card in it? Will there be major issues with drivers, etc.? I haven't kept up with the amp much in the past couple of years so I don't know what its current status is.
-
Nope, no problems. I've been doing that ever since I got my R9 285, and then alternated between Nvidia GPUs and AMD GPUs. I'm currently using an RX 480 in the GA with no problems (a GTX 980 was in there before, but then it swapped places with the RX 480).
-
That's good news, thinking about going to AMD & FreeSync using the GA if I decide on one of the new Alienwares.

Right now only 1 screen available.
Stock supply fluctuates massively.
-
The R3 had a 400 nits screen from AU Optronics, which was G-sync capable (though not implemented in R3).

I asked him a week ago and he was tight lipped in his response (read the full exchange): https://twitter.com/aw_umar/status/788360044916019200
I believe the answer is that the G-Sync panel requires a different motherboard to the rest of the configs as the G-Sync panel has the display connected directly to the GPU, where the other panels have it connected to the integrated GPU for Optimus (something else he almost confirmed: https://twitter.com/aw_umar/status/788360798129098752), and for now they've only built G-Sync motherboards with the 6700HQ. I think what he was hinting at above is that the 120Hz panel will be made available with the unlocked Kaby Lake CPU, once that's available, but based on leaked roadmaps that won't reach consumers until at least Jan. -
Why is the voltage so different between the stock and repasted screenshots? (Monitoring window, lower right)
In the stock paste (higher temperature) snapshot, the voltage appears to be 1676.741 millivolts.
In the repasted (lower temperature) snapshot, the voltage appears to be 569.5 millivolts.
Changing the paste shouldn't change the voltage, should it? (Unless there is a short...)
I'm guessing the drop in temperature is also due to the dropped voltage, not just the heat transmission of the paste.
-
I just finished my repasting.
You will never believe what I just saw....it was horrible.Djangi likes this.
