I was in the same boat as you, not knowing if I should get an r3 for cheaper or wait for the r4. I ended up deciding to get an r3 from the outlet, and I will most Likely upgrade to the r5, or maybe even the r6.
If you wait for it, you can get a fantastic price on the outlet.
My setup I ordered included:
-- Alienware M17x R3 Laptop
-- 6X Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
-- 750 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
-- Dell Wireless 375 Bluetooth Module
-- Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
-- Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000
-- 9 Cell Battery
-- Processor: Intel Core i7 2860QM Processor (2.5GHz, w/Turbo Boost 3.6GHz, 8MB Cache)
-- 16 GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (4X4GB)
-- Soft Touch Stealth Black
-- 750 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
-- 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M
-- AlienFX Color, Quasar Blue
-- 210W/240W switchable Slim 3P
-- Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Operating System DVD
-- 17.3 inch Wide FHD (1920 x 1080 60Hz) WLED Display
-- Alien M17x R3: 1 Yr Ltd Warranty, In-Home Service after Remote Diagnosis + CompleteCare
(the reason it says 750gb twice is because it comes with 2x 750gb)
All of that, for only $1619, before taxes, which is an amazing deal, as it would cost over $3k new. The only thing it doesn't have is Killer Wireless, but that is an easy upgrade at home I can do. So if you want a good deal, go to the outlet. If you don't see a computer you like, it's okay. They update the list 40 minutes after the hour, every hour. Also, you can call or chat with the people there, and they can find you other deals that they don't list.

Edit: BTW did you get an outlet new or refurbished? -

That is another great thing about ordering from the outlet; very fast shipping. I ordered it Monday and EDD is Friday. -
-
Also, if you call up an outlet rep, and tell them the specs you want, you can normally find much better deals than on Ebay.
Also, sometimes you can find deals like taking 10-20% off outlet computers. -

I think most likely I'm going to wait until Haswell to retire my R2. My dual 6970's are absolute beasts and I really couldn't be happier. My biggest issue is the waining strength of my 920XM. It really is just blown out of the park by SB, Ivy Bridge will make it look even worse. Haswel will run LOLLERSKATES around it.
I'd also be inclined to wait to see if Alienware will ever offer a compareable RGB screen again, because without one I'm going to have one HELL of a time letting go of my R2. The m18x screen really does nothing for me. I'm an admitted screen quality snob. If it ain't 90%+ CG, it ain't for me!
That is, of course, unless Alienware REALLY pulls out all the stops on this refresh and offers some incredible specs.
What do you guys think looking at the R2 in my sig? Upgrade this year, wait until next? Never upgrade ever again? Sell all my laptops and switch to onlive? Move to Alaska and become an inuit? Your call guys. -

The Next generation GPUs will probably not be that much more advanced than what we are going to get with the 79XX and 680M parts.
Google isnt translating for me.. anyone care to give it a go?

4 June is an exciting season, because all notebook manufacturers, processors, manufacturers and graphics card manufacturers will be updated to a new product, Ivy Bridge is currently scheduled to be released in mid-April has been postponed until late Aprilin this dull waiting for the occasion, bring a new generation of Alienware M17XR3 spy photos and a variety of test data. (Note: The spy definition low and did some safe handling of location information contained in all the pictures and filming equipment has passed filtered out, please understand)
The first is the body the appearance of part of the photo, these machines from the test factory, that is, the informal machine, mainly to test the stability of the interface functions, and new features.
Shell part and M17xR3 in almost same
Did not make too many changes
The left side of the interface has not changed
The right side is natively compatible with USB 3.0, when it starts like USB32.0 direct start, speed on some of the upgrade
Since the appearance of little change, so we mainly test the M17xR4 on a new graphics card and processor, provided screenshots can not be taken away, can only be photographed. Host Configuration i7 - 3820QM processor, the GTX675M independent graphics card, 24GB memory, 1080p display, 750GB hard drive.
Can see that the graphics card is GTX675M, 384 stream processors, 256bit bit wide, 96GB of / s bandwidth, and the same 620/750 frequency, almost a GTX580M.
Under the i7 3820QM information
Processor and memory, four the 6GB composition of the 24GB giant memory i7 3820QM information
Almost and GTX580M less than 200 points of GTX675M is similar to the the GTX485M upgrade to the GTX580M this optimization core.
A M17xR4 GTX680M version, graphics card is too new, GPU-Z is almost entirely Unkown. But the point of view the configuration information from DELL, GTX680M 768 stream processors, 32 ROPs 256bit bit wide, 4GB memory.
GTX, 680M run sub-
GTX 680M Overclocking after running sub-
There is one thing thing about GTX685M, in fact, from DELL, we only found the of GK106 N13E-GTX code of graphics, is a piece of GTX680M, and are not what GTX685M, the GTX680M the wattage measured up to 100W, and HD7970M 65w has a huge gap, do not know the formal card will not the same.
M17x-R4 specific configuration information: (not officially released, all programs are subject to change)
Processor board with HM77 motherboard corresponding Ivy, Bridge, will provide a choice of three processors, the standard i7-3610QM provide i7-3720QM, i7-3820QM quad-core processor upgrade, As for the i7-3920XM in M18xR2.
Graphics on sale initially provide GTX660M the HD7970M, and GTX675M three options, later will be the flagship GTX680M. The HD7990M is no news.
Screen will be 1920x1080 1600x900 WLED 1920x1080 WLEDs and 3D WLEDs select sounds are the same as before, but the internal cable will be redesigned to use new materials, brightness and color to further enhance the response speed will be faster than before a lot. (The brightness of a friend said too much brighter than M18xR1! The reading M17XR4 screen look the M18X feel only half brightness)
Memory will be 8GB/16GB/24GB/32GB several options, the frequency of pre-1333Mhz, 1600Mhz, post-2133Mhz version. The basic option and M17XR3 using the brand is no longer before the Kingston or Hynix, but will switch to Micron and South Asia, as to why we know.
Hard disk will 750GB 7200RPM jump, 500GB 7200RPM pure SATA version has disappeared, but the 500GB solid-state hybrid version retains the largest optional 2TB hard drive, but at a slower pace, 5400RPM.
· New M17xR4 top of the screen also offers a 300W pixel camera, autofocus, while the keyboard light will continue to highlight, not before secretly feeling. The friend asked the water-cooled, clear, test models M17xR4 water-cooled, and the current data indicate that DELL plan on water-cooled, even M18xR2. Others, such as material, color, sound card, CD-ROM drive, four aspects have remained the choice unchanged, the NIC is not clear on the test models is the Killer, 1103 version (M17xR3 1102 version, less an interface.)
In fact, like the white R4 upgrade iPhone4 to the iPhone 4S M17xR1 to M17xR2 is an inherent speed experience change, a significant shape change would leave the next year the HASWELL processor and MAXWELL graphics,.
Finally, the latest news is that M17xR4 is expected that the release time is the end of the second quarter of 2012, which is in May and June (PS: the last official time shall not exclude any early, delayed or change).
Just ran it through google translate manually, was going to fix up the grammar and such but..eh too lazy xD -

I got it for $1477.16 including tax and shipping.
I have 21 days to return it so I hope it will be really good
I was just hoping its a bluray but its fine. I'll just buy a SSD also when I get it. -
Or eDP will improve quality of Display? as it will run on low power. -
HMM I thought the r4 was going to be out very soon. I got a look at the m18x r2 not much change on that guy other than a 3rd hard drive and the added mini pcie port on the bottom.
-
Table21 do you work for dell or something!! lol Have you still got m18x parts for sale. Did you see anything different with the screen?
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
-
Wow, new display tech, 3 hdd, ivy bridge, kepler gpu, mini pce (so possibly 256gb in msata and 3tb hdd or 4 with slot dvd) and watercooling option! I don t know for you but M18xr2 seems perfect to match D3/GW2 launches. If it s true: I am sold
.
-
Really looking forward to the new m14x. Has anyone dug up any info on whether it will carry a 660m??
-
Any supporting rumors? I'm not even saying facts as there are none AFAIK.
If we are dreaming then yes, RGB+3HDDs+msata would be awesome. But let's be real, not gonna happen -
AW might be competitive in the US but P150em with gtx 670 costs 900 usd in Japan. They need to innovate somehow for Asian market. -

it was posted a page or two back, look it up

Maybe special formula liquid filled heap-pipes.. But i can't seem the fitting Water cooling in the current chassis without sacrificing the Optical Drive and a few other things. -
I don't know, from the translation, I didn't really see anything that's making me jump off my seat...Everything looks pretty standard upgrade with the gfx card being the only interesting thing if GTX680M shows up. Maybe HD7990M will come out after the 680M comes out. The screens sound the same to me. I would be surprised if they launch with water-cooling.
-
-
Hm... Water cooling would be interesting to see in a laptop! Totally a breakthrough) But i guess AW could introduce WC systems during next year Haswell laptop refresh, when they redisign their product line
-
Not now. I just ordered my M17xR3

Demo seems quite impressive :
Asetek Demonstrates Liquid Cooling For Laptop And All-In-One PCs - Asetek, Inc. -
Asetek already showed the M18x watercooled. The design is already there. It have been tested and data collected by them. All Alienware need to do is buy the patent/design and test it out themselves. Perhaps they already done that before the youtube video?
If they introduce that in a notebook and its spill proof and resistance trough time, that would put Alienware on the top waaay above the other OEMs. And it would be my #1 on my to buy list
And according to the leak, they plan to. Atleast with the R2, and perhaps the R4 aswell!! -
I guess I can take it a part and see what screen it is. I was taking the r2's apart to build r1 but there are a few parts that are a bit different. -
A year ago, I would have bought an M17x over any Clevo. But now that Clevo has Optimus and backlit keyboards, I'm not so sure. I think AW needs something to separate themselves again and watercooling would do just that.

Yes they are rebadged Asetek coolers, just like Corsair's, Antec's (etc.) line.

From the youtube video Asetek commented this:
-
Nothing about higher resolution screens? iPads have 1 /3 more pixels then high end Aliemware. I want retina screen Alienware.
-
Would be nice with the water cooling. Definately a big selling factor! But something tells me it will be very expensive (but hope not), and restricted to US sales only. Would be too good to be true if Alienware made it available globally.
-
ok ok enough about the m18x before i do some crazy to get the money to buy one lol... wat can u guys tell me about the m14x which is at my budget range without having to do crazy stuff lol
-
1. the dgpu will be part of the mobo and come with 1 or 2gb. That means 128bit(because its not going to be 256) which if its a 600m series the 650 or 660 most likely. This is good, it means kepler and hopefully better performance than a 560 192bit.
2. Intel has moved up the first 'releases' of ivy bridge to april 23 (originally the 29th). This means we're going to find out sooner than later what the lowdown on the new alienware refreshes is for sure. (if you want a source google news "ivy bridge april 23" and you'll get your dang source) -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...-nvidia-600-series-not-just-fermi-kepler.html -
As for Optimus, the M17xR3 and M18xR1 have switching from the day one. M18x also has a 12-cell battery which can last for 5+hrs easily and that's the flagship system with top performance and OC'ing both CPU (BIOS enabled) and GPU. Compare that to the new Clevo flagship P270WM which has a battery life of 30-50min and do your math. Yes, having a 3930K in a laptop is nice but if you can't push it past stock clocks, it may be not so nice. -
hey does anyone know if the 3820 will work in an m18x or a m17x r3?
-
we are hoping it will with a bios mod. if you have a 2920/60xm its not going to really add much.
-

Not sure if it has been mentioned in the thread, but the M14x R2 will have dual HDD
-
I was just about to purchase an M14X with this setup:
i7-2760
8GB RAM
256GB SSD
1600x900
3GB 555M
For a little over $1,400 refurbished.
Then I heard about Ivy Bridge. I'll wait until May, then this same M14X configuration should be hundreds cheaper. I hope, anyway. -
Also, if Dell is not doing their deal where they throw in 8GB upgrade from 4GB, then take the 4GB and put the *Gb in yourself, also a money saver. -
New M17x R4, M14X R2 and M18X R2 are coming - Speculation thread.
