Oh, there is your problem. Don't get it from eBay. Dell has much better deals on the outlet, and usually there are up to 20% off coupons off the already discounted prices they are at.

In fact, you can build a brand new one from Dell for cheaper than that, lol. Take the standard model for $1099, bump it up to the i7-2670, upgrade the screen to the 900p one, and take everything else standard. Do the RAM and SSD upgrades your self. BOOM, brand new computer made just for you for $1274 before taxes. Plus, once you make it, call up Dell and get them to pull up your custom one and haggle for better prices.

Brand new from Dell starting at base $1099, add i7-2760 and 900p, total = $1,424. That's with just 4GB RAM and 1.5GB 555M and no SSD. The refurb is still the much better deal. Show me where you got $1,274 for that setup?

    Ebay? WHy not check dell's outlet? I just ordered my M17xR3 (2720QM, 16GB 1600Mhz, 580M) posted as $1800+tax for $1450 all included.

I didn't spring for the 2760 and instead did the 2670. If you need the extra CPU power, then yes yours is a better deal. But I'm just saying, you could get a brand new, never used computer for cheaper. Or at least buy from the Dell outlet. They constantly have coupons and deals going on, plus you have Dell's warranty from your purchase date, with the option to increase the warranty. And Dell's warranty is arguably one of the best in the world.

You should call Dell or the specific sales rep that helped you with your sale. Once it's built and shipped they usually take the stance of wanting you to pay the over-priced warranty extension prices. It's a whole lot cheaper to get the warranties when the laptop is purchased. If the give you any grief, just explain that you could return it within the first 21 days and do another order exactly the same but with the extended warranty. At that point in time, they usually will do what you want :)

The sales reps are very helpful, just cal them up and see what they can do.

Rule of thumb: Never, never, never ever buy a complex advanced machine without a reliable 3~4 years warranty/support service! ;)

Another "rule of thumb": Never generalize.
Often extended warranty/support is a waste of money.

In laptops, especially gaming laptops that you plan to use a lot, the warranty is always a good deal. 4 years of coverage with accidental is like $500 if purchased with the computer. A single GPU replacement is over $600, other parts are similarly expensive.

I can pretty much guarantee that you WILL have a part failure within 4 years if the laptop is your primary computer, and in most cases that single failure will cost more to replace than your whole warranty. If your failure is like 3 years later you might even get an upgraded part or a new computer.

Many people have multiple parts failures, and there are some people that have jumped up through several laptops on a single 4 year warranty.

And I repeat again - never generalize. Your "guarantee" that I will have a part failure within 4 years has as much merit as me saying that I won't.
And, in my case, I will be right and you - wrong, since neither of my desktops, nor laptops that I own/owned have failed.
Any generalization based on your limited experience just discredits whatever valid point you might have.
If I know that machine I am considering has low reliability rating it, wouldn't be smart of me to buy it in the first place, would it?

Then don't buy an extended warranty. For the rest of us mere mortals, I suggest buying it, as Dell's warranty is amazing, and gaming laptops (regardless of manufacturer and build quality) have a high rate of part failure due to their high performance nature.

Since I have a 1 yr limited warranty that comes with my unit, can I order the extended warranty anytime before the expiration of my limited warranty? Because as I understand it, extended warranty takes effect after the 1st yr standard right?

You can extend your warranty at anytime during your first initial year of warranty. However, the price will be exponentially higher than if you purchased the extended warranty during the laptop purchase.

More than many... (and also to my colleagues and students) In 32 countries!

BTW: Didn't try to generalize: Anybody can always buy without warranty, but when it's a complex and advanced (w/new tech) system, you may pay a big price for that decision. ;)

No. You can tear down and reassemble your box on your own all day long as long as you don't cause any damage. Even then, the warranty isn't voided. It's just suspended until you pay for Dell to repair it and re-instate the warranty.

I bought the extended warranty and I have already gone through $500+ dollars of replacement parts. Its good to know that if something does end up broken or damaged that all it takes is a simple call to dell and it gets replaced. ;)

I called this morning and Dell quoted me $279 for 1 yr and $493 until 2015 (~3yrs). Is this ok? I am interested in the longer one but I just want to see the laptop first. I have 21 days to see if I will be satisfied with it anyway. So I plan to get the warranty within 21 days if I decided to keep the unit.

    Thanks for the info.

I wonder if you could haggle and get it lower? I got mine upgraded to complete care from just the stock warranty for $160. Seems like they added a year to my warranty as well which is fine with me. :D

I didnt really get a chance to get the details. I was asking the rep if she can email the details to me but she said I can check it in the site. But since I dont have my unit yet and the service tag, I cant go to the details. I will call them again when I get the unit and see what are the options/prices. I would probably post it to get some advise from you guys.

I know its been said that the spied m17x or m18x (can't remember what was seen) did not seem to get a chassis refresh. Do you guys think it will be the same for all of the models.

It seems odd to me that they would ignore the desire to have a choice between a glossy and matte screen for one (with the glass panel). Maybe they are only concerned with how pictures of the models appear in reviews lol?

It has been proved by Aikimox that the display panel behind the glossy cover it's a non-glare one. So, a logical and rational solution 4 the glare problem can be ( as I already stated somewhere else), a glossy cover that can be snaped-in/snaped-out ( similar to those interchangeable colorful lid covers) according to the needs / desires of the consumer.

It's very simple to implement and will make happy to everybody...

You may hate generalizations, but they exist because they are generally accurate. Gaming laptops fail, industry statistics demonstrate it beyond any shadow of a doubt.

I personally have never had a computer fail during the extended warranty period, so my personal experience says that it is a waste of money. However, the failure rates, statistics, and rated lifespans of the components in these laptops says that a failure within 4 years of heavy use is a near certainty. I purchased 4 years of accidental coverage because on gaming laptops it is objectively a good and sound investment.

You never see anyone come in here and say "My 4 year warranty just expired and I never used it, I got jipped!" but we have multiple threads a week with people who had a failure, didn't have the warranty, and were looking at $$$ for a repair.

So I stand by my generalization, it may discredit me in your mind, and perhaps you won't buy the warranty, and hopefully we won't see you making a thread in a year or two about how your $3000 laptop is dead.

I think he's actually right. I'd have to look at a packing slip to be 100%. I haven't looked at a refurb packing slip in years, but I do remember in tech support back in the day if we saw a part with a "MOD SKU," that meant the whole unit was a refurb.

thought i would quickly post 3 things
    1. alienware has the highest repair rate of any computer brand in 2011(only by 1% i think hp or acer were second) so get a warrenty

2.my clevo it cost me $60 for a 3 year return to base warrenty(i dont think theres any global repair bucause its the reseller who handels the warrenty and in other countries there are other resellers e.g. in australia i got mine form metabox in america there is no metabox just sager etc)

    3. in the 8months that i have had my laptop i have had no problems excpt for a dead pixel i got when they deliver it so i got them to replace screen
    apart from that nothing.

    p.s.
i did accidently chang my nivida control pannal to chinease but i turned it back to english but now when ever the nivida window pops up to say yes,no etc it in chinease does any one know how to change it

I think the comparison there is a bit unfair for AW & MSI as their setup/configurations are mostly geared towards high specs for gaming performance. Compared to the rest of the group that are mostly supplying consumer laptops. Although most of the brands has their own gaming rig, they are not the same as AW and MSI that concentrates on high specification laptops.

Most people who buy consumer laptops doesn't have so much expectations regarding the performance of their unit compared to people who bought their laptop mainly for gaming.

If your AW's benchmarks are below average, I am sure you will bring this up to the customer supports. Who among average buyers test their consumer laptops for benchmarks? Its very rare. So for me its not an apples to apples comparison.

Edit: Repair can be very general. It can be just tweaking some software to improve performance or as much as replacing parts. I think PCMag covers even the customer's call to tech support for software related queries which I dont really consider as repair.
