the funny thing i find is that is only 2% higher than dell in general which is the highest out of non specilised laptops???

I think my POV is unbiased since I'm not really an AW owner yet :D
I just thought its not comparable.

I guess that means comparing Dell to other consumer brands, their quality is not doing good. Maybe that's the reason too why Dell is trying to make their Tech Support really good.

I didn't really read the whole article, I went straight to the charts  But the sample size is also important in getting these percentages. How many Apple owners are there compared to AW users? Or compared to other regular laptops?

Let's say there are 1000 apple users in that data against 200 AW users. Just and example. Apple repaired 100 units and AW is 50. That's 10% for apple and 25% already for AW even if their numbers are lower.

I dont know if I'm making sense here lol. I'm just trying to add another example why its hard to compare.

Sadly I had to replace my M14x motherboard twice. Something I've never done in any of my previous 10 or so laptops. There seem to be more posts on the alienware subforms about dead parts than on any other sub forum that I browse.

Statistics is a tricky thing. Even if you conduct 2 similar surveys in the same neighborhood, same time and using the same criteria, you will get 2 different results. I'd completely disregard those numbers, guys.

Don't forget, most AW owners "know how to mess" with their beasts, lol. Benching, OC'ing, repasting, etc., all goes way beyond what would an average joe do to an average consumer machine. I myself opened my M18x ~15-20 times to the level of CPU/GPU swap. And with the M17x my actions resulted in 2 cases of warranty service in the past  So, even though I never had a faulty machine, I contributed to the negative statistics. What about those infinite cases of dead-from-overheating machines as a result of improper care (just put it on a blanket and run Furmark, anyone? ;) ). And how about those who exploit the warranty to get free upgrades??

Bottom line: take my word (I've sold and serviced a bunch of AW, Clevo as well as business grade machines in 2011) for it, AW is very reliable if you are a reliable user. If you know how to care about your beast, it will most likely last quite a few solid years. The M18x in my sig is one of the most reliable laptops I have ever owned. Zero issues in almost a year and not a single replacement except for CPU/GPU upgrades and downgrades (back to stock now).

we already know what is coming

M14X R2: same design-body ivy bridge cpu possibly gt640m or 650m same screen

M17X R4: same design-body ivy bridge cpu GTX660m-GTX675m-HD7970m same screen

M18X R2: same design-body ivy bridge cpu GTX660m-GTX675m-HD7970m I hope for better screen 120HZ 400nit or RGB-LED but those are dreams

conclusion: no redesign body,no m17x aluminum body,no other colors same red and black, same Edge to Edge glass on the screens no option for matte screens, no RGB-LED screens, boring :(

Yep. And if so, the only major "issue" to speculate about it remains... The display panel! ( and the good disposition of Dellienware to listen to the costumers)

design yes features no i have a clevo and the only differences betweens this and the m17x is the backlit keyboard(which is in the newer models) and that this is less likely to be stolen :)

AW needs to watch out or Razer is going to put a dent in them in a few years. (The Blade is a good start.. imagine a whole lineup of machines from them)

They need to go thinner/lighter where possible.

    (Within reason).

From what we've seen so far I think Razer is catering to the fashionable with a bit of gaming crowd. Those who like the looks of macbook air but still want some gaming juice out of it. Razer would amke those for a while before they would even consider heavy bulky gaming laptop.

Ugh, here we go again with the Blade. That thing is not a competitor for the M17x. Looking at what it's packing, there's no excuse for it to be thicker.

Let's see Razer put M17x competitive hardware in their system and we'll see if size will remain the same.

Oh, its not competitive "now", especially on price. But i do think that in the next few years, as TDP's drop and Razer gets more traction, they can be a real player. I think with their design ideas and further refining, they will be a real competitor in the coming years.

Now.. I had the option to buy a Blade a few months ago and went with the M18X. The performance just isnt there.. yet.

But, you take a 660M M17X and a 660M Blade and put them both in front of consumers with a similar price point.. I think the majority would choose the Blade...

Now.. i don't want to derail the thread.. my point was.. i think Alienware should really start to take notice of Razer's machine and start to think of trying to trim down their machines slightly to be more attractive down the road.

I agree TBP, pretty disappointing that the new refreshes will still feature overweight and overly thick designs. However the hardware options are usually pretty high end, and as such it has swayed many(including myself) to become A.W owners.

where is the graphics switching on clevos ?

    where is HDMI-in ?

    nice design ?

    good sound system ?

    good battery life?

    1. i agreed with u about the design they keep it simple the p150 and p170 are both fine looking laptops the x7200 is very ulgy but it holds the title of the worlds most powerful laptop(the 270wm does now) with its desktop cpu
    [IMG]
(i don't know how to put the pictures in lol)

with clevo the prices can be over $1000 difference simply by excludeing a few simple leuxurys such as look, backlit keyboad, and hdmi in(i mean honestly just use a tv).

the sound on my p170hm is great it got a sub it can get rather loud and is good quality

the newer models have now have muticoloured backlit keyboard and optimus i think the p150em get around 5-6hours lite use

how clevo basically works is that it focueses on the most important things in gaming for example the touchpads are not good, it dosent have a beutiful design etc but the screen is great, the build quality is very good(it plastic though there is very little flex) likely not as good as the m17x r2 or m18x with the metal cases it has all the ports u need such as 2-3 usb3.0 ports, 7.1 surround sound etc

here is a review for the p150em u can see the pictures and find out more about it
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Schenker-XMG-P502-PRO-Clevo-P150EM-Notebook.72895.0.html

don't forget that that it was clevo who supplied the laptops for alienware before they got overtaken by dell(which was when alienware was better)

also i am getting the m18x because the 18inch clevo has been discontinued and i don't need the desktop cpu also without upgrade both computers are close in price (i jsut want the duel gpus for gaming) an as i said lienware are do look better

    edit:
also i would like to know how many people have had problems with there alienware because my 8 months with my clevo i have had no problems

    edit 2:
could some rich guy buy both the alienware m17x and the clevo p170em or something like that to give a proper comparison :)

The X7200 is big and bulky/heavy enough to make an M18X owner blush.. :)

Faster because of the Hex core.. no doubt.. but you have a lot of Thickness and a LOT of Power Brick to haul too.

I agree guys Clevo slowly catching up for the most important things on a gaming laptop but still have a mile to go to compare with Alienware

I have own Clevos in the past and they are solid computers they just not for every one like a 18" laptop is not for everyone either

and 6-8 core desktop CPU's in a laptop sounds amazing but at what cost ? you have to run stock clocks all the time because the cooling is not the best to overclock, your machine is 3 inches tick to house the CPU and heatsink , you need 2 power supply's to play demanding games

its the same thick and heavy as the m18x(they both weigh about 5.5kg and are just over 2 inches thick) but yes it is only for people who need a powerful desktop and travel

technically its smaller because the m18x is 18" while the 7200 is 17"

    also there not all 18"

Hey, just joined due to this thread, so hi!

The thing about water cooling is it doesn't necessarily make anything quieter, water cooling just replaces the conductive piping in most peoples systems, you still require an 'extractor' to remove the heat from the system, for most people this happens through ... fans. However the proposed system will potentially make a laptop system quieter under strain as it will mean the gpu heat sinks and fans are being used as well, resulting in the cpu fan not having to work as fast and generate more noise. (if anyone like me has an older dell laptop you may know that when you use it for a while under strain the main fan will rev up and become noticeably louder).

In summary the system is still dependent on quiet fans.

And im looking at picking up either a AW 17" or 18", probably after the new ones are released or the current ones see a price drop to clear. Main factor is performance per pound.

    1: No :)
2: The M14x R3 or R4, in about a year. For now, all gaming is done on my desktop and my E6400 suffices for portable work. Portable gaming is Diablo 2 for now :D
3: Most of all, a matte 900p screen. I can live with a not-so-powerful GPU as long as the stock cooling is good.

I took the liberty of creating an idea at Dell's IdeaStorm website, please go there and promote it so we can get matte screens on Alienware laptops. I'm sick of delaying my purchase because of these excuses (a glossy screen has prevented me from buying the M11x R3 already).

Dude do you know the concept of watercooling? It still needs fans bro. In a laptop probably not even that much quieter. It isn't swapping fans with water, it's swapping the copper heatpipes with pipes filled with water that is flowing very quickly around the system.

Keeping on track, the M18x beats the Clevo Desktop CPU variants in most gaming situations because games like raw speed rather than no. of cores. A test was done over at OC3D with dual 8 core Xeons @3.6Ghz vs an i7 quad @ 4.8Ghz. That's 32threads vs 8 which should be a no brainer but the 16 core machine hardly kept up in games. Rendering and folding is another story :D

    Hi HerrKaputt,

A lot of IdeaStormers here have asked, demanded... a matte screen option (particularly for the M18X(n) or, at least, a non-glossy (or antiglare) display panel. We do not had get any answers so far... We feel "ignored".

There is a simple way to solve the issue: Someone (Aikimox @ the notbookreview forum), not so affraid like most of us of loosing the warranty, has researched more than a bit and found that actually the display panel behind the E2E glossy cover is non-glare screen panel... So, he caaaarrreeefffuuulllly removed the E2E plastic cover and enjoy the non-glossy screen panel.

What we can learn from this is that if Dellienware really want to listen to the costumers and solve the issue for all of us, they can implement a Snap-in / Snap-out E2E glossy cover ( similar to those color covers they offer for the lid of some laptops) and let the user decide when he want to use the glossy cover and when it's better for her/him to snap-it out... Now that will be designer/bussiness intelligence @ work!

But even that easy solution propossal never received any reaction or answer from Dellienware people. Sad, very sad indeed. :(

You do know clevo was the ODM for the first alienware laptops right?

Clevo has graphics switch, decent sound, and good battery life in the p150em/p170em models. They also look nice too.
Just because they didn't have a illuminated keyboard (which stayed off on my M17x R3, M11x, and M14x), doesn't make them less of a feature proof design. Look at Alienwares current lineup and their screens, talk about terrible. I'd rather have a great screen and a non-illuminated keyboard.
In terms of design, my G73JH had a better cooling design than any of my alienwares. Both clevo and AW fall behind in that category.
Alienware has some good competition, which means in the end it's the customers who win.

^^Some very good points however, I'm not sure that the Asus does have better cooling, granted everyone's experiences differ and I'm not saying that the Asus ones are bad or anything. Healthy competition is great and I like where the gaming market is headed for all brands although Alienware innovation is slowing down a bit.

The new Clevo models do look really nice for someone that is looking for a gaming machine with very subtle aesthetics. I mean I bet I could take a P150em into a conference and no one would bat an eyelid but if I took in my M17x R3, I'm sure I'd get a few odd looks.

The problem lies with the fact that Dell own AW. Because Dell like keeping all their products spearate, all their lines suffer due to lack of overlap. For example, I doubt Dell are ever gonna give us anything other than WLED screens and the 3D one in the M17x. Their B+RG ie 95% gamut AUO panels will only be for their XPS line and the RGBLED IPS displays will be exclusive to their Precision line. The AWs will get the newest GPUs and the beefiest CPUs and that's about it. Dell spreads their premium components across their product range as does Clevo and resellers, the problem is that Dells range is way too large with no overlap.

I'm sure if AW was privately owned like they used to be, we'd see the top of the line components as options.

I'm not dissing Dell owning AW because the warranty they offer is without equal but I'm just bringing up the up and downfalls of being owned by a large corporation.

hes right about the asus cooling they are very efficient and also quiet but they only go up to the gtx 560m which is fine but not competition for alienwres and clevos its more in compotition with the dell xps etc

my clevo has a 95%gamut matte screen which i beleive trumps alienware :D

also i found something similar to the razor blade(except better)
that one is the $2200 but there $1300 with the same gpu i just chose the one below because it it gives the most information

At least Asus ROG laptops are more quiet. After hearing the leaf blowers on the Alienware ones, can't help but feel something is not right. Sure, there's powerful hardware under the hood. But if they can make the fans more quiet by improving their thermal design and fan curves, AW would be more attractive to me.

i don't mind the sound of my clevo while gaming because i don't notice it(headphones etc) but during idle clevos fans fluctuate from off to on a bit to on more then off which gets a little anoying

    edit:
there will never be a laptop that has it all(apart from mabey the origional alienwares) for example this asus wins handsdown in style(better than alienware it has leather for f*cks sake) and cooling but the gpu etc are nothing superfancy
    http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Special_Edition/ASUSAutomobili_Lamborghini_VX7/

while the clevos have performance, the screen and price etc but the quality isent great(y touchpad mediocore keyboard etc) and not great style.

the alienware has style and performance but lacks a great screen is, is too expensive and also has alot of problems keyboard ghosting, 580m throttling, bad customer support etc

Well this is a speculation thread, let's hope that they offer RGBLEDs on their next stuff. I'd love to see the return of the m15x...

2hr isn't decent when talking about battery life. It's very mediocre even for 17" notebooks. Look at the Precision M6600 which gets up to 6-7 hours. With my M18x I can work in office mode for almost 6 full hours or about 4hrs of video playback. As for the screens, I wouldn't say Clevo's have a serious edge there, except for the 15" 95% gamut screen and only because of the fact that AW didn't offer anything in that category last year. As far as the M17x and M18x goes the screens are very much on par. In the 18.4" category AW uses the best panel on the market as of now. Yes, we lack the possibility to go matte and upgrade the panels aftermarket, but that's a downside of the design which is great for the looks but bad for the DIY diehards.
Now when you talk about Asus and best cooling, don't forget that Asus never used the most powerful components on the market both the CPU and GPU wise. How about an Asus with 580M SLI + 2960XM + BIOS OC'ing to 4ghz? There are many notebooks that are more quiet than M18x but what about the components? just as an example I'm using a 2-piped heatsink (meant for a 29x0XM) with my 2630QM and the max ever gaming/load temp was around 65C with the fan n ever even reaching 50%. 80% of the time the fan is OFF. Now that's quiet ;) So when comparing different systems, we have to compare the components as well. BTW, I have seen a bunch of G73JH owners with dead-from-overheating GPU's. So, what good is the quiet cooling design if the real load temps are way higher than normal?

the new models which he was talking about get around 6 hours also they do now have muticoloured keyboards with (3 zones and like a dozen colours)

and my current one the 17" that ur refering to get about2.5-3 hours watching a movie also it has a 95% gamut matte screen which is great

i agree with u in reference to the asus as i said earlier they have lower level components but they are quiter while gaming(the burnt out gpus u refer to is because they don't clean out the dust my mate had one which kept crashing with the temps rising to 95+ etc it was because he dident know he had to clean out the dust(which ur suposed to do every 2 months) after that it was fine)

as while in idle all laptops are pracitically the same and while gaming i use headphones so i don't even hear it

You do know that the P150em is getting 4-5 hours of battery life right? Just like my m17x did and more than my m14x...
Also my M17x R3 screen plain sucked compared to my buddy's p150hm with the 95% gamut screen. The M18x isn't much better from what I've seen. Just because it uses the "best in industry" 18" screen, doesn't make it good. You can also get the P170em with a 90% color gamut screen as well, which is a lot better than the M17x R3 (a big step back from the R2).
As far as Asus' cooling, the design is a ton better. Drawing air from the front of the laptop and pushing it out of the back. Not depending on sucking air from the bottom of the laptop. My 720QM stayed nice and cool compared to the i7 in my M17x, even if I was using it on top of my bed. Sure it only had a 75watt 5870m, but last time I checked people are swapping in 6970ms and running them on the stock heatsink.

Blind fanboyism isn't going to help your case any. I like to keep my options open and pick the winner in my eyes.

Like I said, the 95% gamut screens are only available in the 15" sector and not because of Clevo but because of big vendors like Lenovo, Dell and others who pushed those panels to equip their mobile workstations in the past. Clevo didn't intend to offer it, all credits go to Sager resellers like Mythlogic and XoticPC who listened to the customers and made Sager aware of the demand.

The M17xR2 RGBLED panel is still miles and miles ahead of the 90% gamut panel offered for the P170. Yes, the M17xR3 has an inferior panel compared to the 90% one offered by Sager resellers. The M18x screen is still better than the one used by the P180. I've seen them both, stock and calibrated.

Asus did offer an interesting cooling design but my point stays valid - it never had superior cooling if you take the components into consideration.

As for the fanboism, we are all biased. But unlike many others here, I was a Clevo&AW reseller in the past and owned pretty much every high-end notebook including mobile workstations. So my opinion comes from the first hand experience. I used to put systems side by side in a lab and run benches across the board. Yes, in the end I switched to AW but only after an extensive comparison and trust me, when it comes to notebooks Im a very picky customer. ;)

The thread is about new release AW items.
It s a bit unfair to compare them with new 2012 Clevo products in my opinion.

Clevo is up to date with 2011 AW, but they don t bring anything new to be honnest.
They don t really push the market, they look at what AW is doing.

Within 2 weeks, we ll be able to compare(I hope).

I owned 2 clevo and 2 aw in the past. Never had any problem with them.

Some one mention about the Alienware being the Mercedes BMW of the laptops and that analogy is close to the truth if you can have all that power beauty and support I guess some things can be sacrificed like the glossy screens on AW

Now let's look at the MacBooks their screens are nor rgb or ips or 100% color gamut but they are quality screens and even with edge to edge I enjoy them the build quality is the best ,sound ,battery, warranty so he macs can be the Bentley Rolls Royce of the laptops

Now the Clevos are more simple plain design you can put any kind of screen you want 72,92% color gamut matte, glossy, you can put different graphic cards you can get a custom paint job the warranty is covered by the reseller , you need to mail your machine so they more like a custom hot rod a chopper bike or a muscle car

You guys are taking this the wrong way there is tastes for everything some people like BMW some people Bentley and some Muscle cars and all have to sacrifice something I try them all and for me the best options are Dell Alienware and Mac not just because the looks features or the power because the warranty is the best

Regardless of where the 95% gamut screens came from, clevo is offering them which is better than anything alienware offers currently.
The M18x screen isn't that great, you even said after adjusting it that it's no replacement to a wide gamut screen.

I think Asus' style of drawing cool air from the front of the computer would greatly benefit AW or clevo. If you can't see the positive in drawing in cool uninhibited air from the front of the computer, then I can't help you. Just because they didn't use the same components doesn't mean their idea isn't a good one. I'm sure I could dig up a few things from my old thermodynamics book as to why it's a good idea...

I'm glad you've gotten to experience a few laptops. Having a friend that owns a nice shop that sells a lot of laptops/desktops has its perks too. Thankfully my experiences are first hand as well (well except for the battery life on the P150EM that is).

Where did you get that (the bolded) from? Every Mac I've heard sounds like crap, and warranty, while having lots of stores around for repairs, don't the warranties only last a year..?

Also battery is good because it uses parts from like 6 years ago, so doesn't use as much power yes, but horrid performance. (Air)

Plus those things are flimsy as can be, felt like I was going to break their 17" model by picking it up in store lol.
