That's where I disagree. Can? - possibly yes. Will? - most likely not. To make a custom order like that would be out of question unless the screen already existed at the time of R&D and could be easily acquired in desired quantities. I really really hope to prove wrong here :(

Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for giving me an actual answer, you just made my day! <3 I await with baited breath. I'm basically on the verge of buying a new laptop and fairly broken up about whether to just get an M17x/M18x now, or wait for a new one... But if I can know all that information next week then I will have an excellent idea of how to proceed.

Seriously, thank you again. It's so rare to ask a question to the internet in a thread like this and actually get a legit answer back from someone who works for the company, heh.

Yeah, I figured the Intel Ivy launch next week would be when more news can actually be released...

On the display, did Apple do something different to get their new retina display on their iPad of was it high volume?

Awesome, I am really excited about hearing about the new lineup. I would really like a new notebook right about now :)
I still can't decide if I will have the m14xr2 or the m17xr4 :) M18xr2 is too big and pricey for me unfortunately.
I really hope that the m14 gets a great gpu so that my choice will be made easier :)

Speaking of pricey, I just realized that the base m18x model (the current one) costs about $3000 in my local currency and onlinestore (in Sweden) compared to the $2000 in the US online store. Quite a big difference :(

While it's hard to really say for sure i am willing to bet that the reason Alienware hasn't shown us anything yet at all is because they are gonna be sporting the same case for 2012 models but simply new cpu/gpu. If that's the case i am gonna have to go with MSI GT60 being released.

I believe that it's a good thing, simply because new design = more expensive systems.
As long as I'm concerned they can keep the same chassis for another four years if there's no real benefit except new looks.

A new chassis can not only interest more buyers but also keep current alienware owners from simply upgrading their laptop if it has the same chassis. Basically if you want the inside goodies you'll need the new chassis and push you towards buying the new system altogether.

There are numerous things Compal/Dell can do to prevent this and still keep the same design.

The same happened between the M17x and the M17x R2 very similar casing with small modifications and i don't know one, except me, that attempted to put the R2 parts in the first M17x. I did it because i owned both for a while otherwise i wouldn't have done it either. It wasn't cost effective.
Look at the M11x line, three releases with small modifications and the conclusion of the folks who attempted to turn theirs into the new release was the same: You'd be better off selling the current one and buying the new model.

Minor changes can be done to the inside to fit the new motherboard (screw holes, ports positions etc.) which won't fit in the first M18x without some modifications which at the end of the day might not be worth it.

The 660M is slower than the 570M. That says it all, in relation to the 580M.

M18xr2 will propose kepler 680m in july and in end May you have 7970m.
675m has no point, I agree. Wait ivy nda release next week ;).

I need the M18x by 1st June (leaving for big tour OS on 8th June), so giving myself a week for delay.

But I don`t want to be stuck with Alienware releasing M18xR2 with 670m and then 680m gets delayed further than june and M18xR1 gets canned :(

So I was browsing on the Alienware website (needed warranty stuff for my M18xR1 due to overheating GPUs... sigh) and noticed M18xR1 was no longer offered, so I came to this thread

Any idea when M18xR2 is due for release? Search doesn't seem to pick up anything for me

Now to see what they'll do about these GPUs /sigh

The alienware store is now updated with new (updated) machines. New gpus are the most noticable things changed.

Edit 1: Dual harddrive option for the m14 x, thats kinda cool (only gt 650 option 1gb or 2gb is a let down)

Edit 2: I think that the machines are a bit cheaper (at least the m17) the screen upgrade (full hd) and upgrade to gtx675 are a lot cheaper than the upgrade was to 580 and full hd

Now just gimme that ivy bridge goodness and I will order the m17 asap :D

Edit 3: The old m18x has the option to upgrade to dual 560's for free, this could be an error since there still is an option to get the single 560 card.

That is really a shame but kind of understandable, it would be hard to compete with ultrabooks with the current approach as we see ultrabooks getting faster with discreet graphics and similar price but way more portable.

I am waiting on the new M14xR2 and was reading about the GT650m.

Apparently the chip with DDR5 memory will be much faster than the DDR3 option and they are available in both?

Does this mean the M14x will be DDR3 or DDR5? Is it possible to upgrade between them?

Apologies but not too tech savy :(

    Thanks

Some of the specs are up on the German AW site.
http://www.dell.com/de/p/alienware-m14x-r2/pd (Click on "Technische Daten" and scroll down)

    M14x - GT 650m 1 or 2GB GDDR5

Should bring a nice boost compared to the DDR3 RAM.
