Take a look at the M17x page. Apparently, the M17x R3 upgraded... to the M17x R2! lololol
Alienware M17x Gaming Laptop Details | Dell
-
Lol the King of all mobile Gpu's the 7970m is only a measly $200 dollar upgrade for the R4, while the last decade fermi 580/675m throttler is a $350 upgrade! Things have definitely got interesting now.. will be ordering the R4 as soon as the Ivy Bridge options are available for order. Only concerning thing is the 1month preliminary ship date, I can already foresee endless delays as supply will surely be limited.
-
Technically going to the R2 from the R3 is an upgrade
-
LOL, that is an R2, not an R3.
Well... sort of... CPU and chipset, yes. In other aspects, not so much. Single GPU and "soft touch" plastic chassis vs anodized aluminum, no 1200p RGB LED are all downgrades. -
I really hope they redesign the m11x with quality in mind. No more putting together plastics and a netbook screen and call it a "gamer laptop." If not, just axe it.

Wish granted. -
m18x seems to have a triple-drive option, I wonder how that got wedged in there... Also seems to lack the 7970m?
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
that means if you can get 7970m for $150 less than 675m on the M18X they offer sli 675m for $2600 is going to be $2300 with the basic CPU and 7970's ?
also all this refresh of GPU's but still old CPU's or if we order now we get M14X-r2,M17X-r4,M18X-r2 with ivy bridge ?
so this could be the end of speculations but where is all the answers?
you answer my question if the M18X has 3 hard drives this are the new machines and we are getting ivy bridge
-
If there is no 1900x1200, then it's not M17x R2...
-
Yeah, that would be sweet! I hope AMD's are available soon then. I really want to put my order in. But I do think if you order now, you get what you pay for. Better wait for the Ivy Bridge processors to be listed before ordering...
Also, how did they get 3 HDD's in there? Are they the regular 2.5" ones, or only 2 of those are regular? Haven't had time to read through... -
How come the M17x offers the 7970 but the 18x doesn't?
Hmm I suppose I'll be waiting a little more. -
It's coming, just haven't been around to fully updating the configurators.
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
for what I can see is 3 regular 2.5 hdd's so that must be the R2 and if you order the 2860 you will get 3820 so I think the prices would be the same
now I am waiting for 7970's too
-
Good call. I was going to PM you, but you're too fast for me.
What was that Ivy Bridge embargo date again?
Actually, since the 14 launched, the 11 sales dropped way off. Stay tuned, though. People read these forums, and these people plan products. I'm pretty sure you will see something in the sub 14 space at some point in the future.
OK, about this launch. I can't get into any more specifics beyond what you already know. Time to read between my lines:
Dell works closely with our business partners to ensure the latest and greatest technology is offered on our Alienware systems when that technology is available. When we are able to announce a new version of a particular component, we will. Continuing on that theme a bit, when we are able to sell a particular component, we will offer it for sale. One more iteration- when we're able to ship a particular component (in this case not a minute sooner or LITERALLY a minute later than at all possible, we will ship it.)
*That last sentence is going to be tough to figure out, but when you do, you might be pleased. (sheesh, over clue-ing there.)
Happy speculating! -
I'm really sad they killed off the M11x. I like mine but feel limited by the weak ULV processor, and I had hopes that they would figure out how to put a regular mobile processor into a future revision of the M11x, which I would have eagerly snatched up.
-
Thank you for the reply Bill.
I'll just sit here with my hand on my f5 key waiting for that refresh of GPUs
.
Hopefully we see some benchmarks soon on this gpu. -
Ha! So I will buy my Red M18x-R2 with Ivy Bridge and 7970's next week!
-
>.< this kinda makes me sad. i bought a m14x at the beginning of feb, and i realized a couple days ago that the DDR3 was really holding it back and i wished there was a DDR5 option available when i bought it. Now i look at it today and there it is! Any advice on what i should do? id love to get my hands on a m14x with DDR5
-
I forgot to mention. Recall a few posts back from me when I said you would know more Tuesday. This announcement is independent of that. Just watch Tuesday. Also recall another post of mine where I said "he (I think it was Speedy) was onto something."
Now I'm really pushing it to the limit: Those who order sooner rather than later will have a good day at some point soon. Oh, tricky Alienware! -
Thanks for the infos Bill!
Can't wait to see what Alienware is preparing to replace the m11x ^^ a m13x as a powerful ultrabook maybe?
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
English is not my native language but i think i get it thanks
-
Not sure. I can find out, but I don't want to know. This topic is going to be way too hot, and I don't want to touch it with a 10ft pole. I imagine it will be a few months before you hear anything. Dunno. Pure speculation. Not speaking on behalf of Dell there.
-
Man, I'd love to be Louis playing with all the new toys
-
Anyone know a good way to sell a 2 month old m14x R1 to get one of these new ones?
-
Come on down, bro. I'll get you in front of the goods.
I think they have a marketplace board here somewhere. There's always eBay and Craigslist. -

Nice new line-up. I'm especially pleased to see something as powerful as the 650M in the M14x. Wasn't quite expecting that much.
Improvements I'd like to see:
1) Matte screen. I know it messes with design, etc. but I just don't like glossy. Option to have glossy border on lid vs. glossy panel would be cheap, and get the job done.
2) Silver chassis! I absolutely love this on the M17x R1. I thought it really brought out all the lines of the laptop very well, and I'm disappointed not to see it re-introduced, but maybe it just didn't sell or something.
And tid-bits you'd care to share, Bill, about a comparable XPS line? Maybe that's Tuesday as well? (Hint: They have matte screens, and silver chassis.
)
-
What's on the picture? What's coming? lol
Can't wait to see what will be announced on Tuesday
-
All we need now is a video review where new models would be compared with the "old" ones
-
You are one tough nut to crack, Bill
I`m probably letting my fantasy run wild here but,
Is it a watercooled GPU from Nvidia that is going inside your notebooks? Is it a new notebook in cooperation with Nvidia and Alienware?
-
Now you're asking about one of my platforms! I don't do Alienware work normally, but you guys just sucked me in.
I'll say this, this will be an interesting summer, and XPS is dead sexay. Not extreme gaming sexay, but dead sexay.
Don't get crazy, now. -
Is that a no?

I figured you'd appreciate something a bit more up your alley, yeah.
Unfortunately most people seem to think Macbooks are sexay. I prefer functional over shiny (display nudge nudge). -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
I am getting out of here this speculation thread is alive again with something totally different and I don't want to go crazy
well a little more

Much more posts now with things coming out next week. Did they do away with the ExpressCard slot on the M18x?
I don't see it in the tech specs anymore.
I would expect they would redo the M11x as the top of the line ultrabook which can game a little. Wasn't there a very thin Samsung with new tech gfx just released which was pretty powerful?
Something similar from Alienware I think, but maybe with possibly a slightly better gfx card to stand out...
Looking to wait for M18x with 680m SLI or 7990m xfire w/ Ivy. Hope there are some surprises with the screen. -
Eat you pop corn (instead of your fingernails) and watch the movie...
BTW: the best is that the "tech movie" is the "never ending story..." -
I really like that you hang out with the fans here Bill, really looking forward to the anouncement and my m17x with ivy bridge and all of the secret goodies you are teasing
-
There may not be a 7990M, as the 7970M is 100W.
-
Strange, everything I've read kept saying the 7970m uses 65-70W.

No wonder my alienware sales rep told me yesterday
"I would be angry to order something today only to find out things are completely different" and that he'll call me back on the 24th (Which is this coming tuesday).
+1 for good business ethics.
Oh tuesday how you seem oh so far away. -
I am willing to bet there will be a new design coming Tuesday. The current refreshes are most likely a way to get rid of some old stock shells. They say this is the year of the Ultrabook. With eveyone hoping on board and MSI release it's new GT60 and 70, clevo with their 151 and asus as well they can't afford to simply release an old shell with new insides. Tuesday can't come fast enough!!
-
So Tuesday it will be!
I'll go and hibernate until then
. The nvidia thing with the Alienware logo could be something huge, or maybe I'm just delirious ^^ .
It can't be something related to a sub 14 inch machine as Bill said we won't see the m11x replacement for now on (maybe this autumn with win8 as a 13 inch gaming ultrabook to compete with the others) but it could be a watercooled nvidia card for m18x and maybe m17x.
I really doubt we will see any new design on Tuesday though, but maybe I'm mistaking. -
Help Me Choose: Video Cards | Dell
Seems like it may be 100w after all. -
Maybe its Asetek, Nvidia and Alienware that have made a brand new notebook together. A watercooled notebook with 680M Maybe? Ìts gotta be something with a Geforce product since that "its coming" pictures was posted on Nvidia`s Geforce page at facebook.
Pretty please?
-
I'm hoping for the GTX 660 Ti in the Area X51
-
I haven't seen it on a road map. Maybe someday. I'd guess you'd have to think about development costs and attach rates before you did something like that. My guess is the attach rate would be in the low single digits, thus making it cost prohibitive to the customer. The laws of supply and demand are irrefutable.

Nicely played indeed by the sales rep. Many people hate on them but I have only positive things to say about the dell sales reps and other dell people I have been in contact with on various occations. Glad to hear that they were that honest
