Hello everyone! I just want to say I am new to the forums and glad to be here.
    :)
With that said, I was actually going to order a new M17X R4 this Friday 4/27 with the i-7 2670QM, 8 GB 1600 mhz memory and the Nvidia 660m video card. Now I think I'll wait for a week or two before I order. The minute I see the new Ivy Bridge processors available on the Alienware site, I'll order. I hope it's worth the wait!

Edit: order if you are ready, good sir. Have no trepidation about a certain component which shall remain nameless.

I'm just going to help somebody around here. If you want an Alienware order now, it will come with an Ivy Bridge CPU ;) You don't have to wait till next week.

Humor. Read my last few posts about a certain unnamed component that shall remain nameless and has nothing to do with this situation. nudge nudge wink wink know what I mean

I'm just kidding around. Welcome to the forums, and thanks for considering Alienware. I kid around with the guys here a lot. Don't mean to show you up at all. Just having some fun.

In my local alienware online store (Sweden) I don't see the 7970m so I'm waiting a little bit further. I'm hoping to rock a m17x-r4 with said gpu when it gets available to purchase :D

I love reps that have perfected the art of concisely relaying all necessary information by doing nothing more or less than talking about nothing. I tip my hat to you, good sir.

Did I mention that I really like the matte screen the XPS 17 uses? Very nice screen that... L721x? What, who said that?

Yeah I didn't see your earlier posts. I still want to see it with my own eyes first. I'm stubborn I guess *shrugs*. Wasn't going to order till the 27th anyways. I remember ordering an old HP with the latest and greatest core 2 duo a year back just to find out 3 days later the I3, I5 and I7 line of processors came out...If I could have kicked myself I would. Since that day, I've been cautious.

See the 2 posts above. Note how the ship date slips, and both are in May. No orders will ship before May. We can't talk about a certain component that shall remain nameless without being named and no specific reference given, but if one is a good guesser, one can make a good guess as to why those orders won't ship until May. If it's just an Missouri (show me state) thing, totally get it. If you can wait and get your order in line after you see IB on the screen, I'd wait just so I could sleep better. If you're not anxious at all, I'd also just wait to make sure. Totally understandable.

I am a big fan of the XPS 17 as well. Great bang for the buck. Matte ain't happening anytime soon on Alienware. People need to keep banging away about it on forums and our own IdeaStorm, though, if we ever have a shot at moving that needle.

Matte is obviously desirable. I want high density displays. At least 2560x1440 on the M17x 3D and 2560x1600 on the M18x. There is already a shout for it on IdeaStorm. Even Intel is predicting it.

Getting all giddy about this stuff now :)
Nvidia and amd need to hurry up with their top end cards though :/
As for the uber hi res displays I personally think itll be quiet hard considering they already use one of the best panels on m18x..not that many panels for 18.4 inches apparently :(

Perhaps that was too subtle. :p

Matte screen (that's not covered by anything glossy) on the new XPS line, yes?

Aaanyway, this whole thread is making me look at an M14x for college. If it wasn't for the damn screen... is it a matter of just pry and pop for glass/plastic panel, or something else? Couldn't be that hard to take it off and punch a screen-size hole in it, surely.

Extreme Edition will probably also be the case. If you ordered with a 2960XM it will come with a 3920XM.

AMD are already out the door with the 7970m. Visit the thread over at the M17x forums to check it out.

Edit to Mizzurah made. TYVM. Editorial accuracy is a hallmark we all need to strive for.

I saw you coming. No Gorilla glass on Alienware. XPS is one sexay beast, though. If you don't need gaming muscle, June will be fun. I believe there are resellers that can oblige. Scott RC Tek. Akimox maybe?

A little disappointed that the 7970m won't be announced tomorrow for the m18x. guess I'll have to make empty threats at my sales rep to not call me until it's available. :(

I'd bloody-well hope so, given that it's based on the same 28nm part that powers the desktop 7870. It's competing against last generation's flagship after all.

Judging my this : Nvidia 28nm Mobile GPU Plans Revealed | Best Gaming Laptop
Nvidias final product should give a similar performance(both have a vantage score of 20k).
Considering the other scores fit the ones nvidia announced here's hoping for a nice competive silicon :D

Good to know. I'm not American though, so the whole thing becomes a bit more complicated (though there are reseller options there as well of course) so I'd probably just do something myself with it. I'll be waiting until the Summer before I order anyway, so thanks for all the responses. It's one thing to see Dell/Alienware reps here, it's quite another for them to be so down-to-Earth and helpful. It's how Support should be.

Hi, excellent thread and very informative. Glad I popped in here or I'd have ordered an M17x R3 blissfully ignorant of all the speculation

Question; does anyone know if the 120Hz LCD option is lightboost enabled for 3D Vision 2?

Though I can't tell for certain, it's sounding like it's "regular" 3D Vision.

    Well..yeah..

    7970m = new graphics card

    675m = new name for old 580m

If amd's card was worse than nvidias under these circumstances there would be something quite wrong s.s

It will be more telling to compare the 680m to amd's graphics cards.

Ok guys, need some education here.

    My m18x R2 comes w/ 6 gb 1600mhz of memory. I've got 8gb of 1333mhz in my current m11x r2.

    1) Can I swap the memory? 2) Should I swap the memory?

A little out of topic but ..

6GB is enough for almost everything including gaming if there is a reason you need 8GB then swap it now 1600MHZ ram on the M18X must be that cheap ram with 11-11-11 timings at that point you can force the ram to run at 1333MHZ 9-9-9 in the bios but what you want speed or space?

there is some 1866MHZ corsair on newegg that some people got it running at 9-9-9 timings that is the fastest ram you can get now for like $90 bucks :)
