I just ordered mine, now waiting for the anxiety to kick in lol :)

    My setup is:

    Alienware M17x Base
    6.144 MB (1 x 2 048 + 1 x 4 096) , (I'll upgrade this if necessary myself)
    Internal Swedish/Finnish Qwerty Keyboard
    AMD® Radeon™ HD 7970M med 2 GB GDDR5-minne
500 GB ATA-HDD (7 200 rpm) (I'll upgrade this if necessary myself and probably use the 256 GB SSD I have in my m11x)
Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, Swedish (I have a couple ultimate licences that I got from work that I'm gonna use)
DVD+/-RW-drive (Don't see the point in having a bluray reader for my needs)
Creative Sound Blaster Recon3Di with THX TruStudio Pro Software
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2230 with Bluetooth 4.0 (the only one available, I'll see if this one is a keeper or maybe i'll upgrade later)
3 year warranty Had to have this after everybody's recommendation here in the forums
Processor Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM(6MB Cache, up to 3.1GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0) (I guess that this will be either 3610/3615QM)
Integrated Skype HD Certified FullHD Camera with dual digital microphones
    Alienware M17x Stealth Black
    44 cm(17.3") WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD

    I'm officially excited :)

edit: I managed to get a 15% discount (not counting the 3-year warranty promo thingy)

Hey Bill i am having a bit of a hard time deciding for a new laptop. 17inch is out of the question because it's not very mobile for school. I am trying to decide between the M14X or the gt60 msi. They are both going to be very similar except the 1.6 inch in size and the msi having a 1920x1080 resolution that comes with a 2 year warranty. Can you tell me what is Alienware bringing to the table that makes their system better in 2012 with the release of ivy?

I have heard a few things with the new generation M14, 17 and 18 X Laptops. One, M17 and M18 are supposed to have a mSATA slot now. Next thing I hear is a new eDP connection from motherboard to the monitor. Anyone confirm this?

Yay, nice to hear someone confirm this directly.

I think for marketing, it would be a good idea to stagger this. Let the M17xR4 get all the glory and press now and Alienware/Dell is all over the tech forums (as it is now). Wait a week and the M18x comes out and that's all over the press now. :)

I don't know the part number. Tried to search in our internal tools, but the system listed there is just a placeholder. Until the system starts shipping, we likely won't have all the upgrades and accessories listed for sale just yet.

But not in this case. Simple driver qualification delay. Nice side benefit for the 17, though.

Well if you don't mind me answering I'd personally go with 14x if you're looking for portability and battery life. Performance wise there shouldn't be that much a difference I don't think since the resolution drop from 1080p should balance out a slightly weaker graphics card.

Edit: Making due just fine with a 460m on 1600 x 900 for battlefield 3 so you should be just fine with a 650m :).

Actually I missed the first post. MSI makes good products, so I'm sure both warrant consideration. It's an apples to oranges comparison, though. The MSI is a 15". That gives them more headroom to deal with thermals and more options for components. The base CPU in the MSI looks to be the 3610QM, which is Ivy Bridge. We're actually honoring the Intel embargo and not listing our Ivy Bridge options yet. (I got the cpu info off The Verge, so I'm not saying MSI violated the embargo.) I'm not sure if we're going to offer that CPU on the 14. Won't know for sure until we announce.

There are pictures posted of both systems. I'll just leave that there and let you decide which looks better, if that's even a criteria for you.

The GT60 will probably be heavier. We don't have a 15" offering anymore, so the comparison between GT60 and M14x is no more valid than the comparison between GT60 and M17x.

I guess you'd have to decide on your priorities, rank them and see which system hits the most of them. My priorities for a gaming rig:

    1. benchmarks
    2. benchmarks
    3. benchmarks
    4. styling
    5. cost
    6. size/weight
    7. screen quality (yes, I don't care about the screen as long as it's not awful.)

EDIT: My criteria tells me to get the M18x. :)

They say "Supports 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ Processors" on their web site not quite sure if that violates the embargo.

Do you think you can find them for that price in a year? (I'm ignorant of aftermarket prices.)

Hmm. They had to have run that by Intel first. Good idea. On their specs page it lists the cpu as "next generation Intel Core i blah blah," so I guess they're not violating embargo.

As far as I can tell, you can only put that system on your "wish list," so I'm guessing they will flip the switch on the 29th or 30th. We have other reasons for doing it the crazy way we did it.

pss since m14x already comes with 2760 and 2860 you can probably bet something similar might find its way into the new m14x

I seem to remember a 3610QM being listed as the lowest quad core chip on the Dell Portugal(?) site. That's probably your 2670QM equivalent.

    2.3GHz (3.3GHz turbo), 6MB cache, 4C/8T, 45W.

Hi everyone! My name is Isa, I'm from the Caribbean! I've been following this thread for a while and taking note of what everyone's saying. I've been wanting wanting a laptop for a long time now for work and the portability( I get tired of sitting behind my desktop now lol) and I've convinced my dad to buy me one XD. I was torn between the m17x, the sager np9150 and the Asus g75, but I've always really liked alienware so that's why I'm going with one :). Just wanted to ask some things though, a lot of guys I know always tell me ho the alienwares are cheap build quality and they give trouble. Is that true? It's my first laptop so it would be terrible if it does give trouble, not to mention I won't hear the end of it from dad -_- lol

Far as I know new m17x is keeping the same chassis in general( I could be wrong). If so then the only downside is that it's mainly plastic however people still say that it's quite sturdy and overall well built.
Beside if you run into any problem with it dell support is awesome :)

m17x isn't really portable if you need a computer for college or intend on carrying it a lot I would recommend the m14x. If portability isn't a major concern then by all means go for the m17x.

Thanks that's good to know :), and the plastic wouldn't really bother me so that's fine. Umm with respect to configuration, how does this look? And what advantage is there in choosing the Intel 6250 wireless card over the centrino n 2230? Sorry if I'm asking questions in the wrong place btw

If portability isn't a concern then go for m18x xD.
Even so m17x won't be too much of a problem moving out say twice a day getting from home to work and vice versa.
Just don't buy them single strap bags get a backpack type :)

Oh yeah, I was thinking about the m14x, but I think I'll like the extra screen size, besides anything's more portable than a desktop lol, I don't mind lugging around the weight. The m18 is pretty sweet! Saw a video of it on you tube running battlefield 3 and it was amazing, but I don't think dad would want to pay so much for one, and I don't really want to burden him with the expenses! I'm hoping I can get it to last a few years! Though I'm so clumsy sometimes, just got to be really careful I guess

It was Denmark. I know too well that AW doesn't have a site in Portugal (if they did, I'd be an AW owner).

By the way, I'm going to ask Bill directly: what can I do to buy an AW laptop through Dell and ship it to Portugal? (AW laptops are sold here through retailers only; their warranty is crap, some feature last-gen models only and they inflate the prices)

The build quality of the r3 is really good, it's the best laptop I've owned. I would recommend getting as much accidental damage warranty as you can swing though. That service is great.

The processor, gtx and memory should be fine for most things - bit of gaming included. As for the wireless card I think the intel 6250 supports 4g and has a bit better wifi connectivity..not that sure on the 4g part.

Buy the lowest end RAM (which I believe you did) then upgrade with parts from newegg do the same with HD if you want a better one later.

Edit: I believe the upgraded wireless card has Bluetooth 4.0 as well but I'm not 100% sure
