Wish I had the money for an Extreme CPU. I love pushing stuff to the limit. But alas, the 3720QM will have to do. The 3820QM is not worth the money, plain and simple.

I'm new to those drives myself but the system I just ordered has a 64GB mSATA solid state drive for the operating system... it seems there pretty fast... 200mb/sec?

From what I understand, mSATA is another form of an SSD only smaller, way smaller. Somewhere between a business card and a quarter. They can have different functions as well from being a smaller capacity, cashing drive, to the larger ones being a boot drive. Intel was the first to come out with it but recently Samsung has released a larger capacity mSATA which is quite fast. I actually read bout it on here. The advantages to having mSATA in a notebook is it frees up both drive bays allowing you to have more storage or possible setting up raid. Only disadvantage that I can see, unless the motherboards come with 2 mSATA slots, is setting up raid on them. I think it's only a matter of time before manufactures realize their true potential and make boards supporting multiple mSATA's.

Yeah 3610QM is more than enough for me. Wouldn't mind having the 3720 though.

Not at work right now, but if you post again tomorrow, I'll check. I'm likely to forget after I go to sleep, tbh.

This I'm not real familiar with. Basically, I think what people do is use some kind of freight forwarder. I'm not exactly sure if that's within Dell policy to knowingly ship to a forwarder, because we have no way of knowing if they are forwarding it to a nation on the State Department black list. Allan over on the sales assistance thread is more up on this policy than I. He should be anyway.

Nothing more to add at this time. I guess just F5 this page all morning on Monday. Press Releases | Dell Once the press release is live, I'll cover anything they don't include and that's not confidential here on this thread or the owner's threads, or both. I guess this thread will die off after everything's announced.

    Oy vey.

Like others have said, it's a smaller SSD, essentially. I'd go with the 512, and run my OS and applications off of it. I'd use a spinner for my big data.

The Samsung P850 in the XPS 13 is a beast. So fast. Cold boot on stock Dell image in under 30 with a Core i5. I think the Alienwares may be getting a mix of P830 and P850. I'll have to grab a SKU tomorrow and BOM it down to see. Anybody seen comparative benchmarks between the 850 and 830? Kind of hard to find, since at least the 830 is an OEM-only drive.

EDIT: Sorry, I provided incorrect information. My mistake. I'll leave the post as-is so as not to confuse anyone further. Very sorry about this.

The drive will comfortably read 500MB/s and write 260MB/s on a clear day, six times faster than a comparable HDD. It'll allow Windows to boot in under ten seconds and transfer "five DVD files" . PM 830 Info from another site. I couldn't find anything about the PM 850.

Saw some Q's how to buy an Alienware from the US if not living in the US. Just buy it at HIDevolutions, they ship worldwide and you can use coupons if you got any.

I think the problem with that was when shipping to some countries there might be customs checks and they might levy import tax based on the price of the thing so you might wanna check that out before rushing into buying it like that :)

    Plus two problems:

    1) I'd have to ask a Portuguese keyboard. They probably can do it easily, my E6400 was bought in Finland with a Portuguese keyboard with no problem.

    2) This is a more serious problem. I'd have to transfer Dell's warranty to Portugal (why else would I buy from them?). I had no problems doing that with my E6400, but that system is sold here. The AWs are not.

Had a mSATA in my older Lenovo X220t system. Worked similar speed wise as a standard Intel 510 SSD. Check out the Lenovo forum as many of the Thinkpads have been supporting mSATA drives for some time now.

The mSATA works similar to a SSD its just smaller so you wont find large 256GB drives. I just used mine for Boot+Adobe CS5.

I just ordered mine with a 750gb w/o the mSATA.

I'm wondering if I should call and upgrade to include the 32gb mSATA. Is it worth it for $75? I was going to buy an SSD on my own but wondering if this is easier/worth the money rather than have to reinstall Windows on the SSD.

If you ordered the m14x I would just do a Alienware respawn and get a Intel mSATA and install OS to it. You can get a 80GB version for around 150-175 dollars. Amazon.com: Msata, 80GB, Mlc, Oem: Computers & Accessories

Not sure what mSATA Dell is using for the 64GB. Maybe Kingston.

If you went with a m17x just buy a standard SSD as the m17x supports two standard size HDD/SSD.

    Thanks!

I got an M17x. So the mSATA doesn't take up one of the hard drive bays right? Maybe I'll get an mSATA to boot OS; and an other 750gb hd and raid them.

I think your warrenty is valid worldwide even if the system is not sold in the country the system is going to be used in. You might check that with Dell first. Maybe Dell-Bill B knows something about this.

Federico is more knowledgeable about the keyboard options and how the warranty works. I've asked him to look at this question and respond. He should be along in a bit after he does some research.

    Hi HerrKaputt,

You can do an International Warranty Transfer to Portugal as any other Dell computer for Alienware. In regards to the keyboard, send me through a private message your system Service Tag, so I can check the availability of the keyboard.

I've known about the PM830 for quite awhile, and it's one of my favorite SSDs out there at the moment, based off of my experience with the PM810.

Mind linking us to some info on the PM850, if you can? I've never heard of this drive until now. Thanks. :)

Oh jeez. Please disregard. I was mistaken. For some reason I hard coded "PM850 on XPS 13" into my brain, but it's actually a PM830. Sorry for the confusion. I'll just leave the original post as is, so as not to further confuse everyone.

What are the chances of a 2012 refresh model shipping with sandy bridge instead of this unnamed component? To me it doesnt make sense for alienware to release their new refreshes with last gens processing power :p
Maybe im just worrying as i dont want to return my laptop and it get delayed a few more weeks

Sorry. I don't quite follow. Do you mean "what are the chances of the Alienwares announced last week shipping with SB instead of IB?" If that's the question, I can't say anything more than I already have. We have a press release currently slated for Monday morning. That day might change, but I'm 99% certain the press release will be live at that time.
Just watch this space Monday morning. Press Releases | Dell

The PM810 I have boots faster than anything I've ever seen (in person, at least), so I can't wait to get my hands on a PM830 :D

Makes me wonder about a possible PM850, though. ;)

Yeah. I wonder as well. I've never done any kind of SSD benchmark, but I do know the stock Dell customer shipping image (before installing any software) on an XPS 13 with a Core i5 and 4GB of RAM will boot from cold off to the desktop in easily under 30 seconds. I imagine I could edit start up and services and get that down to around 20. I call that very fast. :)

So, that scenario usually happens in two ways. 1. Upgraded exchange for customer satisfaction (multiple service calls without resolution, super bad service, etc) or 2. used exchange and there are no matching configs so we have to go "like or better."

If for whatever reason, you get an exchange from any system to one that we sold with any particular component, you get the version of that component that ships with that system. We don't go out of our way to downgrade you.

does this prove the theory that NO M17x R4, M14X R2 or M18X R2 system comes with the predecessor of that unnamed component?

Considering these systems are brand new, and are just now hitting the production line, I don't see how you can get a refurb. Is that what you are referring to? I would think if they send you a 2012 model, it will come with its configuration options. Aka, not last year's options.

If you are wondering if the unnamed component will ship in the new models, I would suggest reading all of Bill's previous posts in this thread. I believe he made it as clear as he can. I also don't think he can say any more right now. If you want absolute assurance on the component in question, wait until next Monday or so. ;)

I believe that was an AAFES pricing error, no? Don't think that was Dell's fault. I could be wrong, but still we were totally covered from a legal standpoint. Obvious human error.

Kinda off-topic but are there any rumors as to when the Aurora will be refreshed? I'm having a really hard time choosing between the desktop and the laptop and I think seeing the capabilities of the new Aurora would help (mainly new graphics card options).

Does the m14x put an msata and a sata in raid, how does that work with them being different drives? and is it better to do that or just get a bigger ssd?

Edit: I am currently considering a Crucial m4 from newegg if anyone has any other drive suggestions I would be happy to hear them.

    Hi Bill and Federico,

I don't think you understood my case. I can't send you a Service Tag, because I don't own any Alienware system, and one of the reasons for that is that Alienware doesn't have a Portuguese website. I'd have to order one from elsewhere.

Bill, I think I'll use your original advice and drop Allan an email, if/when I feel like buying a laptop again (since my original urges, my workload increased a lot, so I don't have that much time to game anymore).
