As far as we know, the M14x continues to have a make-up mirror instead of a screen. Maybe Dell wants to cater to women instead of gamers? :)

A while ago I posted a link to an IdeaStorm link where we are trying to bring this to Dell's attention. Please promote and comment on these:

Wow, was unsure whether you were immature or stupid. Answered that one.

Reading for useful comments, however you should try reading this thread yourself, then you may have a clue what your talking about.

If intelligent people kept leaving things because an idiot turned up nothing would get done.

Now now lets not get personal and start insulting each other it's understandable that someone people are worried about their thousands of _____(insert currency) might be outdated by Monday before they even get the product. Either way lets speculate about random stuff...think nvidia will keep up with amd? :D

The kid made the 'jobless' accusation first, so to be fair nothing I said was incorrect.

Yep, understandable, but surely if your spending that much money (like me) youd bother yourself to read a few pages back at the very least, rather than making naive comments about letter writing and petitioning. Particularly when certain people have made every effort they can to alleviate that worry.

Oh and whats the gossip, 690 twice as fast as 580sli? Got to wait for some benchmarking but they could be overestimating loads and still have room to beat AMD - If money doesnt matter to you.

you call me a kid? lol you are the one going " no he called me that first >< "
and yeah , This thread is about discussing about the alienwares new models , no one asked you to post about your feelings or how you feel about our threads . I just posted my joy to someone else for which we are worried about the new part and esp me , i am scared for it because i live somewhere we dont get alienware and i can only buy it like once an year so if it does not show up with it i have to wait one more year for it and not everyone is lucky enough to live in a place where you do get all these things.
Im sorry for calling you jobless but i really did not appreciate how you just turned up and insulted me for nothing .Just like you din feel good when i called you "jobless" , that indirect insult was bad for me also.
That letter writing was just an idea not even a serious thing cuz i know it will not happen and requesting someone for something doesn hurt.
Im very thankful to everyone over here who did alleviate that worry (esp Bill) ,but until you see something for sure that worry does not get over . Please think before you speak and try to insult someone indirectly because they will for sure get back at you .
    Peace out =]

Never understood the problem with that( got an older m15x which has a glowing one)..did they completely take it out of the FX program or is it just some LED bug?
Is this what you're hoping for:

It actually does glow , but like just white in color , you cant change the color because its due to screen brightness just like the apple sign glows on a macbook but would be cool if the new ones have it glow in diff colors :)

Yeah it glows white, but psh this is alienware we're all paying for colorful lights!
I've watched so many unboxings and I'm like oh kewl alienhead glows white, neat. Then I watch older m17x and m15x unboxings and I'm like HEAD CAN CHANGE COLOR.

And if I can ask, what does screen brightness have to do with not changing the color?

The head isnt connected to the system like the other lights are, its connected to the screen. This allows for changing strength through screen brightness, but it would need to be attached to the system to allow for control of different coloured lights. Not a massive task but its a cost thats easily cut.

eh watched the nvidia annoucement last night was so hoping they were going to announce something for mobile that could keep up with AMD but they didnt. i really prefer Nvidia but if i end up needing to get a new laptop and the best mobile card is not only better then what nvidia has out but also cheaper (by like $100-150 last time i checked) then ill have to go with AMD.

Edit: Wolf beat me to it.... D:

I think nVidia are having yield problems with 680m and the only reason m18x doesn't have 7970m is cause of a driver problem which should be sorted out soon...
I was hoping for a good nVidia card this time around I've been a member of the green team for a long time but looks like its gonna be red team if nVidia doesn't sort out its pricing soon :D

I seen that as well.... I think the closest we'll see is the GTX680 from Nvidia... but who knows when it'll be available... it seems you can sit at the Alienware build screen forever if you want the new tech... lol

Next to Disneyland, this is supposed to be the greatest place on earth!... where enthusiasts can get together, speculate on the newest and greatest machines we can, and get very excited waiting for it's arrival! Bill has pretty much eliminated my worries and tomorrow the press release should help all the planets align... but there's still a tiny bit of me that will be ready to re-order if need be... 8)

Let's all get along knowing that soon, we will have an amazing machine to enjoy for years to come... Cheers all!!

This, 'having issues' with the 7970m has pretty much put me off my temptation to go Radeon this time. Although I always get Nvidia I've promoted Radeon as a much better value product and so naturally put it as better for laptops, but AMD still doesnt seem to be able to churn out the quality drivers that Nvidia do, and I suspect the 'issues' may have something to do with this.

If the price is right, ill still see if i can switch to 7970's if ive got time, but realistically benchmarks dont show all the times drivers cause reduced performance and nigliness and so I feel the 675m sli is probably the better course, for a stable system anyway.

yea i can wait as long as i want but when the powercable or the monitor cable on my m17x r1 fails for its final time then im gonna have to get something. and if im throwing down this much on a laptop its gotta put out for atleast 3 years before i look at a new one and not give me hellish driver problems, almost all the amd products i have used have caused me slowdowns and BSODs. i can always choose a cheaper laptop brand but i just really like the alienware i have, only hope is that nvidia puts out an actually upgraded mobile card before my current laptop completely dies or my choice will end up being non alienware or going with amd

The driver Bill mentioned was the Dell one. There are people who put in 7970m using amd's own drivers and found it to be perfectly fine..knocking 680m/675m out of the park infact the performance is 5-10% behind a desktop 580 at clock speeds of 850 MHz and has been overclocked to 1000mHz on amd drivers.

The amd bad quality driver is more or less a misconception most of the problems arise when the previous driver hasn't been removed before installing the new one.

In general though, I think the Dell qualified driverse are generally stable enough for all systems however they sometimes/usually lag behind the drivers released by amd ( its understandable) so some people generally try them out first and if there are any problems they just revert to the old one.
In fact if you head over to the m18x crossfire problems thread and compare it to the sli thread you'll see both teams have a fair share of bad drivers and such.
Personally speaking, I wouldnt go for a a 675m considering its MORE expensive than a 7970m and is about 60% worse in performance...

So what processor is everyone getting? Judging by current custom laptop sites, I'd estimate dellienware prices at:
    3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3610QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.3GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0) - $0
    3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3720QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.6GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0) - $300
    3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3820QM (8MB Cache, up to 3.7GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0) - $500
    3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3920XM (8MB Cache, up to 3.8GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0) - $1000
    3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3920XM (8MB Cache, up to 4.1GHz Overclocked*) - $1175

Also will HM77 have support for the next iteration of intel mobile processors, or is this it? That determines whether I get a 3720 or 3820 (for the cache).

Also what is with the RAM prices. Oh, Dell...

If you're thinking of buying RAM from Dell, you're doing it wrong.

I'd stick with the 3610, to be honest. It's a 2.3GHz chip, vs. paying another $300 for 0.3GHz more. Given that a 2.3GHz IB chips is going to perform about the same as a 2.5GHz SB chip, it's great value (especially when you consider every game out at the moment is GPU-limited)

    Tbh with a 3920xm + 7970m you're looking at basically a i7 2700k + gtx 580 setup in a laptop, now I know 580 is a bit old now(bless it) but I doubt a gtx580 will be the choking point especially not in a xfire situation..(forget crysis 3 and the likes of metro 2033D :)
Id go for 3820 + 7970 + stock ram and then exchange it out with after market ram
Edit: Considering Haswell will be a completely new architecture you can assume that it wont work with hm77
    Edit 2: http://vr-zone.com/articles/mainstr...formance-or-just-more-integration-/13880.html
Little bit into the article it says that Haswell will get new sockets

    Well, certainly. I was just going to get the lowest RAM version and some Newegg.com - CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10
Just commenting on Dell's monopoly on the overpriveliged, weakly-tech-minded 16-year-olds.
Good point about the GPU bottleneck, though, I was just thinking about future upgrades. I'm a CS/ECE major working with high-performance multi-threaded algorithms for graphics, and I'm looking for a portable powerhouse. An NP9270 is out of my price range.
Thanks for your reply, I appreciate external viewpoints in my position.

    Edit:

I was actually just wondering if Intel had any higher-performance mobile CPUs in the IB lineup, as this is the first array of release in the IB series. Are you talking about the M18x or the M17x?

I have not read all 160 pages but am very strongly considering ordering an M17x with the 7970M. My biggest question, and I know people can only speculate but am still curious, is:

Are there going to be price increases with the announcements tomorrow?

I'm still on the fence on the whole M17x vs Clevo P170 vs i5-3570k desktop debate but if Dell is going to raise prices I'd be more inclined to just order one tonight.

I'd bet on it, but probably not too much higher than R3. Upon comparing the US and Canada pages, one notices that they are same prices from new-old, however that is still with the 2nd gen processors.

Good to see someone who knows what they're talking about! :p

As far as I know, there isn't anything planned for a while. Launch will continue with lower tier parts in the next month or so, and probably only after that will we start to see XM parts.

I was talking in general, except the dual gfx that is m18x only. Now that I checked the dell site it looks like m17x doesn't get the extreme processors(is this right?) either way the 3820 is nicely positioned between an i7 2700k and 2600k which is pretty good tbh.
As for more powerful ivybridges intel will probably do that refresh thing where it just bumps up the clocks a bit but nothing actually significant.Processor checks:

Holy cow! Impressive dips in TDP, I bet peak temps with AW cooling systems will not singe legs in the traditional performance laptop way. The exclusion of the M17x is probably another Dell thing; Alienware makes all their components readily accessible, right?

    Edit:
Thanks! Hmm. Based on historical Intel evidence, would you say that it would be worth it to upgrade to the 3920XM a couple of years down the road or sell and buy new?
