Thanks for all the updates today Bill, really appreciate it. Good to hear that the system's almost out the door, even only after a week! That's ridiculously fast!

I hope your son feels better, it's always tough preparing for vacation when a younger family member falls ill.

    Also @Zacek,

The 18x doesn't really future-proof you any more than a 17x does. You can literally get the exact same specs with both systems, minus the 18 have more screen real estate of course. The 7970M will last you a long time, and by the time that it becomes obsolete, you'll probably be ready to buy another system.

    *fangirlish SQUEE* Benchmarks! Data! :D

Also, thanks for the extra info about how it's virtually impossible to NOT get Ivy Bridge.

In general: I love that people are already getting their laptops (or they're already shipping!) since it means I'm likely to get mine way sooner than the EDD of 5/29 (since the EDD if you look at the m14xr2 page is 5/28 if you order TODAY, and I ordered on the 25th.) and that makes me happy. :)

How to find you CPU SKU:
Go here. Use your order number and your postal code as search criteria. When you get the results, click "What's in this order" or whatever the verbiage is at the bottom. Then you will see the list of SKU's. Your CPU will still show Sandy Bridge. Just copy the CPU SKU and post it here on this thread. I'll BOM it and paste back the results.

Does anybody know when the HD 7970m's will be available for the M18x in Canada? I really want to order soon but right now you can only get the GTX 675M's. I would like 2 7970m's in CrossFire :-(

Mine shipped much earlier than the estimated date of 5/17. I don't recall the exact time I ordered but it was around the time Bill initially hinted at reading between the lines on the 19th. I think most if not all will receive there order much earlier than the current estimates show. (In my order details it still shows "In Production", "partially shipped" with an estimated delivery date of 5/18)

I am stuck at work for the next few hours so I haven't been able to do anything other than boot into the BIOS with mine since it arrived.

    I get this error.

Also Bill I need your help, I think Allan might have misspelled the name on my nameplate(my last name is difficult I don't blame him...) and I was wondering if there is a way to check up on that? At this point I would rather just get the name plate to say m14x-r2 or maybe if my laptop has already shipped will I be able to get a replacement nameplate?

Is there any possible way that I can order an M17x without a hard drive or any RAM? I know Dell doesn't do barebones systems, but I'm wondering if I could talk to someone about that..

You're welcome and thanks for the well wishes. He should be fine by Monday. I feel like I should post a pic of him now, since everyone is being so thoughtful. :)

One thing about 18vs17: M18x has a waaaayyyy better cooling system. If you want to overclock and max out that beast, you will face far fewer temperature related throttling issues.

Tentative target remains May 10. This is an engineering target based on driver qualification, and could slip if the driver fails qual.

Very odd. Most perplexing. That SKU comes back with no valid child or parent parts. But it's an M17xR4, so it's technically impossible for it to be anything but Ivy Bridge. I'll do some digging.

Allan is offline today. You should let one of his assistant dudes on the sales thread know ASAP. If all else fails, @DellCares can ship you one out after the order arrives. If you're getting that error on the website, try mixing and matching different numbers in the search criteria. Maybe order number + customer number will work better. Quirky tool.

Is the better cooling system related to the fact that it CAN support SLI/CFX, or perhaps because of it's size? Maybe because it's made of alloy? I'm curious now.

Size mostly. More air volume=more air=better cooling. There's also a bigger fan on the 18, if I'm not mistaken.

Dangit. Was afraid of that. Now I know where everyone is getting those invalid SKU's. That one doesn't work. It might be a regional thing. As long as it's one of the new systems, it has Ivy. No doubt.

Hello been lurking these forums finally created an account today.

    Mr. Bill sku: 319-0581

Any way to tell how far into production my laptop is? I originally ordered 4/15, then Dell cancelled my order four times, and had to keep re-ordering ughh. Kinda scared that I won't ever get my laptop, I have one day delivery shipping so if it ships any day this week I'll have it by Friday the latest! Need it for school!

If I wanted to upgrade my GTX 675m to a GTX 680m down the line would it be easy to do? Any guestimates on how much it'd cost? Thanks Guys.

Haha Thanks Bill, i really appreciate your help. I just seen it was from my Old Confirmation Order from the M17x r3 which i canceled maybe that's why :)

I'll just ask the support tmr to tell me the SKU Number (even there's a 95% chance germans will not know a thing :D)

    But i believe you :D

Grr probably the WORST ordering experience ever!
Was on the phone for at least two hours with Dell 2x per week being transferred so many times. Telling me my order was cancelled due to an unknown issue 4 different times. They officially made a "re-instatement" and placed my order on the 25th of April. And for the first time I can actually see that it is in production.

Overnight shipping was the LEAST they could do.

When do they charge the bank account? I heard they don't charge you until they ship the item?

They pre-Authorize the amount, then release. Once the order has been delivered they charge.

UPDATE: My M17X R4 arrived via FedEx. I am very happy to report that it was shipped with the i7-3820QM Ivy Bridge processor!

Bill, thank you for your wise and patience guidance.

    Everyone else, trust Bill! :)

On a funny side note, I received a phone call from Dell customer support about 10 or 15 minutes after the M17X was delivered to my home. The rep told me that my M17X was "In Production" and that it was expected to be delivered by the stated date of 05/23/12.

I didn't have the heart to tell him...

@h3xed: Thanks a bunch! I asked one of the Chat Alienware guys about my order and he told me my order probably got cancelled if they didn't charge me because they charge you when you place your order -_- They need new employees....

No way! When was your order placed? My delivery date was 05/24/12, so i might just get mine this week????? Knowing my luck it will probably get lost in delivery...

Does anyone know if they require you to sign for the laptop in order to receive it?

I placed the order on 04/24/12.

I chatted with them this morning when I saw that my system was "Partially Delivered," but I hadn't asked for a call-back. Since I placed the order, I've had seemingly random phone calls from Dell employees.

Hang in there, friends, and relax. Bill's guidance was right on the money.

Now that I have my system, it's time to head to the planet Tython!

Mine was in pre production from 17th-24th, then "reinstated' and put in production right after order was processed on the 26th.

So the Order Status page is not accurate at all. I will most likely get my laptop much later than anyone here due to all the problems I went through.
Do you have to sign for the laptop to receive it? It's raining all week over here lol.

Well at least I get overnight shipping.
You'll probably receive yours by the end of the week.

No idea on ETA. As long as it's not the M14x, you can upgrade to any GPU that fits as far as I know.
    I shall have several. :)

If you guys want order status updates, you can use the Twitter link in my sig to request one. It's a snap to set up an account, and you can just use it for support issues if nothing else.

I was under the impression I was getting at least some form of sata III ssd.
msata would be ideal and leave me a tray for storage. It's not impossible but not much options for msata ssd out there.

Must say i'm a little disappointed I received a sata II ssd when this laptop will fully support a III.

I hope Bill can help me out here. Hate to have to return this laptop.

they doing this now? a few years back i tried to ask a sales/support rep to see if i could get a name plate for my R1 as i had won the laptop in a contest and wasnt sure what they would use as the name on the plate. they said it couldnt be done as they were only made during the order. all in all it doesnt matter, they put my name down and im cool with that. was more worried they would put something else down or nothing at all

I thought so too. Checking now. Will post back what I hear.

You first go to Twitter.com and create a Twitter account. Then you follow @DellCares. Then you send them a message like "@DellCares I'm looking for order status. I will DM you my order number." Then you send them a direct message with your order number. If it's not a direct message, it's public. You don't want to put you order number anywhere public. (I only call that out in case anyone reading was not aware.)

They have different tools internally, and the @DellCares team actually knows how to use them properly.

I knew we couldn't do it back in the day, but I'm sure they changed the process. I could be wrong, but I'm 85% sure I'm right.

I thought that I had read something about it being an mSATA Samsung PM830 as well, but couldn't find it again or easily confirm it with anyone so I gave up and got the base 500GB drive. Hopefully you can get yours straightened out, paying $400 for the 810 sucks.
