Hmm okay good so it's not me. I think it's because theyw ent with the screwless look, so that those pieces snap into place... are you bothered by it much? I just dont want to overlook something that may become a problem in the long term (considering my TERROR with the last m15x :( )

    anybody else??

Hey Carnyl! In my experience with with Dell, the power supply can be problematic, causing a high whine in some instances. If you call tech support and tell them the situation, they will send you a new ac adapter/power supply.

I'm not too bothered about it. It only creaks when quite a bit of pressure is applied.

So far I have discovered a few problems:
    1. When the lid is closed, the right side of the lid sticks out from the base by about 1-2mm.
    2. A feint scatch on underside of the plastic that covers the LED screen
    3. Top right area above the screen creaks and bends when pressed lightly.
    4. Sometimes when turning on the laptop or restarting, the screen does not turn on until login screen.

I just received my new M15x yesterday and I have the click of death, other than that, I love the beast. Was on hold for two hours with alienware technical support and a technician is being sent out to install bluetooth and new HD. Anyone else experience clicking HD

After 2 hour + of getting tossed around between different departments, I finally got my issue solved. Apparently my service tag # wasn't in the system for some reason and they finally fixed that. I called alienware tech support... and the person I talked to will ship the bluetooth card tomorrow and get a technician to install it for me. One thing I noticed though... he talked to me as if I was dumb; or well... clueless. When i told him that my system did not arrive with a bluetooth card installed, he asks me how I was so sure that it wasnt installed... and insisted that the bluetooth card was in there. I told him I know for sure that it is not in my system, so he needs to double check. He then again insist on telling me that the bluetooth card was installed, but will check just because I told him to. I was put on hold for 30 damn minutes ( checking takes that long?... omg ) and he came back on the phone and told me that I was right. Do they think girls / females are dumb about computers or something? or do they treat all customers as if they're all clueless about computers in general??? well whatever it is, I'm very dissatisfied with dell/ alienware customer service today and all of this are caused by wanting them to install bluetooth card on my system. I wonder if i have to go into worse scenario when I have an actual problem with my computer...

Oh btw many thanks to ' nagshead ' for assisting me with this problem. He pm'ed me and is very helpful.

Couple of basic questions, which I couldn't find the answer to in the M15x vs. M17x comparison thread.

    1. Does the display port transfer audio as well? How much does a display port to HDMI converter usually cost?
    2. Has the issue with stealth mode been fixed?
    3. There was another issue with clicking which im not too sure about, has that been fixed?
    4. I'm guessing it has bluetooth, but can this just be confirmed for my paranoid self?
    5. Is the 1080p display a hindrance for gaming compared to the regular one?
    6. Finally, does anyone have benchmarks for Dragon Age Origins on this system? I might be getting a new laptop and I want to be able to play this game on high settings.

    1. Yes. I bought mine on eBay for $9 shipped.
    4. It's supposed to, but many have found that their laptops have shipped without them. If this is your case, call Dell...they should send someone out to install it.
    5. They are both 16:9 ratio displays, so it will be the same...but your games won't perform as well on the higher resolution display simply because it takes more power to play games at a higher resolution.

    2. Not so much fixed as redefined. Stealth mode only works when plugged in and it limits power drawn which is apparently useful on air planes.

    3. Some people have had hard drives making a clicking noise not many are reporting it so far.

    6. Dragon age with full graphics, 8xAA on dual screens at 1920x1080 I get 30-40 FPS (dropping to 20 during battle).

    EDD is 11/30

BUT...I had to redo my order so the rep canceled and created a new order. The original order was EDD 11/24. He said he would make sure they kept to my old EDD. I have no idea if he is just blowing smoke or what.

Last night I ran 3dmark vantage and noticed I was getting 20fps on most of the tests... is that normal? I forgot to write down the total score so I'll run it again later today and post the score. Has anyone benchmarked there m15x with 3dmark vantage yet?

I did a post on this in this thread last week. According to the website all M15x's are supposed to come with BT Card installed but according to the builder specs it is optional so if it isn't on the invoice they won't install it.

My invoice didn't show it but the website didn't have the option to add or remove the BT Card so they sent a tech out and installed one.

One warning. The tech I got was new to the M15x and struggled to get the case open. I ended up having to open it for him.

That happened to me a few days ago, from my experience it usually happens when the GPU gets too hot. i noticed the same thing on my retired m9750. after playing a game for too long, you notice a lag for a sec or two and then suddenly the game quits and u get the message.

I have been getting it randomly when not in games. I played Dragon Age Origins for about 5 hours yesterday at full graphics without an issue.

I just updated my video drivers via dell.com so we will see if it keeps happening.

So I called up Alienware tech support late last night, got through after about 10 minutes of being on hold, got through to Paullo, who was really nice and actually kind of knowledgeable. Anyways, I told him I was hearing clicking noises but seeing no real performance drop, the slight noise is just kind of annoying if it’s dead quiet in the room where I am. He had me run a few of the diagnostics in the F12 bootup menu, which all passed (although if this is a drive head issue usually, the scan disk tests wouldn’t really show that right?)

I also don’t hear it when the drive is under any type of load, like pasting large files or running games. Does this mean I don’t have the issue? Because I swear I hear a constant noise coming from that part of the laptop when it’s idle or just barely being used (like working on a Word doc or something). It sounds like it’s constantly searching or writing, not too sure. I just know I’ve never heard that from any other hard drive I’ve owned. We came to the conclusion that if I see any performance loss, or if the sound gets louder to call back, although I may just call back and try and get a tech out here.

Another question is: if I decide to upgrade the hard drive to a larger capacity, are the included discs (not the Alienrespawn one you have to pay extra for) enough for a clean install of my OS?

This same post is also in the thread solely about this issue, I apologize if that breaks some forum rule :)

Is GTA IV still having problems with i7 mobile cores? You know with the random frame drops?

I hope rockstar releases a patch to resolve this issue.

Doesnt make any sence because if you drop like 2800$ on a laptop it should perform everything on max, you get what you pay for you know.

    Hey Storm
Got stealth, high performance, laptop plugged in?

Did you max your aero settings on your laptop? Your Aero scores are low tbh.

Open up your "system properties", then click on the "advance tab". You should see "performance" then click on "settings". Under "visual effects" tab make sure "let windows choose what's best for my computer" is selected

Edit: @ Storm, have you updated your drivers at all recently? I am reading on some rumblings regarding nvidia's latest drivers and win 7. Just throwing it out there.

    I got my M15x a couple of days ago and it's nothing but a headache. (i7, 1G - 260M, 4GB 1330MHZ Ram).

Dragon Age ran awesome for me that first night. The next day, however, I had to start getting it ready to work on. That means putting on Windows 7 Enterprise. Now Dragon Age is down to 4 FPS. The "Gaming Graphics" portion of my windows experience rating is at 4.3!

I installed the OS, then divers for Intel Ibex Peak Chipset, then Video drivers (all off the resource disc) before I tested. Nothing else so far. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

Sounds like stealth mode is on, just hit the button on the far right of the media bar.

Yep, causing more headaches than it fixes. Wish we could remap the media button.
