Well received my laptop but kind of upset. Two issues, stuck dust under glass and clicking HD. I could probably live with the dust but that faint clicking sound is bugging me. I read on another thread some possible fixes but should I really be trying to fix a new $2000 laptop. Suggestions?
-
Ask dell to send you a replacement LCD and Hard drive. After that if those do not match up demand that they send you a new system or you will be returning it.
-
I don't see the BT under device manager either!!! Should be under network adapters in device manager right?
-
I had the same clicking, and called up Dell, who sent me to Alienware tech support. Get ready for some long hold times with those guys, but once you're on they will run you through some diagnostics and basic troubleshooting. For me, I told them I had changed the APM and checked fans and such for noises. They then sent me a replacement drive, albeit another Seagate. I personally went out and bought a WD Black drive, and am loving the silence! I'm just going to use the replacement as a storage drive in my desktop, or I might sell it.
-
Do they ask you to send the faulty drive back in?
-
I called dell customer care about returning the laptop. She said I have to wait 2 business days for the rep to call me back!!! This is insane.
-
I know a few others have had that clicking sound but it does not seem like a widespread problem. Are many people experiencing this? What are the chances a replacement Seagate will be clicking too?
-
seagate drives are not that great IMO. just have them send a replacement for customer install and if it still clicks either return it or upgrade to a better drive.
some dust behind the lexan will fall if you tap it. I suggest holding a piece of microfiber over it when tapping. my first m15x had a large piece of black trash behind and it would not fall.
I am currently using my second m15x while waiting for my third to arrive. this is dells absolute last chance to have me own this laptop. -
The question is, did the second drive make the same clicking noise?
-
Aside from clicking HD during start-up I have had no problems with my M15x. I think I'll call Dell anyway to see what's up.
-
UGH i just called to try and return it to see if they would offer me money to keep it, but they just told me that they would process the return with no restocking charge and free shipping
-
Can you record this clicking sound and put it up on youtube? My HD makes a faint click noise while it's accessing but other than that it's very quiet. I also had a small dust particle under the plastic edge to edge cover but as others said, tapping on the screen made it fall off. -
Just bit the bullet. Ordered it through bing for the 20% off using DPA. How long do I have to cancel it if the bing deal doesn't follow through?

Bing takes around 48 hours according to the other people here who have bought... mine is already in Production (ordered yesterday, which was Sunday), so Bing better come through in the next 2 days. -
Both my orders bing CB has shown up. Each took about a day.
-
Lastly.... How long does it take for the order to show up on their website? Currently says "No recent orders to display." I'd assume it has to do with the DPA account I just opened pending authorization.
-
Digicam is broken, it is basically a faint clicking sound but it is constantly doing it. I tried tapping the screen from the front and the back but no luck, it will not fall. Damn I was really hoping this would be the one
-
they shipped my mini today lol.
will be here tomorrow.
the m15x is in the boxing stage now.
-
The customer service rep was firm about not even discussing returning it and said I have to wait 48 hours for the rep to call me back. I complained and said that is crap customer service but she would not budge. She said if rep does not call me back withing 48 hours they will take care of it.

If you have automatic updates on it could be downloading them in the background and making the clicking sound. I know mine did when I first got it but once the updates were downloaded and installed, it stopped. As for the dust, that's a bummer but unfortunately it's a side effect of the edge to edge application. Where is the dust located on yours? -
Spec of dust is located a couple inches up from the bottom and about an inch off the left side of the screen. It's hardly noticeable but it is there. Yeah maybe the clicking was because of auto update. Will keep you posted.

Dell's policy has changed a lot since I bought their stuff before. They operate like BB now, no tech support inspection or talk through your problem, no return. Unless of course u wanna pay the 15% then they will just take care of it w/o needing to talk to tech support. Just be patient... -
Pretty good panda, did you go with DPA for an additional 3%? I saved $577 off my new system and that's not even counting the $50 gift card. Specs: i820qm, 256gb ssd, 4gb ddr3 1333, 900p display, 2 yrs warranty + complete care.
-
Good question. I don't know yet since I haven't opened it let alone installed it in anything yet. My original system came with a 250gig (the clicking one), and through some appealing with the tech rep, I finagled a 500gig drive out of them. The reviews on Newegg for it still have some people complaining of clicking.
I personally won't use it as an OS drive, nor will I buy Seagate again, not with the WD one running super quiet even under load.
Also, yes you will have to return your faulty drive. They send a return label inside the shipping box they use to send your replacement in. -

2nd thought..1600 x 900 really is enough for my 15.6 inches screen...and it will be less taxing on the video card, I won't try to modify or cancel and replace order, I'll just be happy and wait for my system to come. Besides..I really dun need to spend anymore....paying my 2100 mortgage now and 2000 dollars 1st installment of property tax...and have an IV hooked up to my arm selling my blood at the moment.....
-
The location of the dust doesn't seem too bad but if it's distracting you, then ask for a system replacement or screen replacement. I don't think the clicking will be much of a problem once auto update is finished doing it's thing. Seagate drives are traditionally louder than others on the market. -

Hey JOker,how's the G60 return? -
Hahahahaaaa! Oh your all gonna love this one. I just called up Dellienware about purchasing a M15x and seeing what kind of deal they would work out. I was on hold for an hour, then transfered, then they dropped my call. I called back and was on hold for another 15 minutes. I told him I was considering an AsusG51J-A1 because it's $200 cheaper and comes with 640gigs of hard drive space. He said they could not offer me the EPP but would work out a deal that basically was the EPP. Even under that deal I told him he Asus was still $200 cheaper and had more hard drive space and refused to give me any kind of real deal. In fact he then tried to talk me into an XPS16 so I just said no thanx and hung up. Don't know if it was just me but I would not expect any kind of deal from them for awhile.
-
The reps never give a good deal. If you want a good deal, you have to search one out. The bing + DPA is the best anyone will get for a long time. -
I'm going to take it back tomorrow. Today we spent a lot of time on the phone with Dell canceling previous orders (that we were told were canceled but never were).
-
howard911s Notebook Deity NBR Reviewer
SO they will only cancel the order if you place a new one? or just straight cancellation -
Nope, just did some research and the clicking in these Seagate drives is a real problem. People on the Seagate forums believe a firmware update is needed but no response from Seagate support.
Yeah, the dust is probably me being too picky, but I really think it should be perfection for the price I paid. No Bing, epp or giftcards up here. Still no call regarding my missing BT module. I almost feel like returning the whole thing and saying forget it. Too bad the laptop is absolutely the best I have ever used other than those issues. -
Hey Everyone,
I finally found a solution for anyone looking for a laptop sleeve or carrying case for the M15x!
The company is WaterField Designs, and they make a sleeve that fits the M15x (even w/ 9 cell battery) perfectly. They were a pleasure to deal with (the owner, Gary, personally helped me find one that would fit), and the quality is top notch. I also got the flap, shoulder strap and "piggyback" to hold the A/C adapter and other accessories.
31-25 is the size you will want. Hope this helps!

No DPA, I prefer my credit card...
I would not have gotten that 256gb SSD (did you get a Samsung?). The only good SSDs out there are the Intels (80 + 160gb) and the Indilinx drives (128 & 256gb models). Performance and TRIM anyway. -
I'd really like to hear the clicking sound for myself, hopefully someone can record it. Right now mine is nearly silent. Well if the system doesn't work out for you, press for a return and get your money back. Unfortunately the alternatives on the market just don't measure up. -
Dell has traditionally used Samsung 256gb ssd. -
Trust me, you would know the clicking if yours was doing it, it is subtle but incessant. Agree, not much on the market that compares. BTW the screen is absolutely gorgeous.
-
CitizenPanda Notebook Deity NBR Reviewer
Yea, Samsung controllers aren't that far behind Indilinx & Intel performance wise but you may never get TRIM support. -
I've been trying to call up dell since this morning to get them to replace one of my orders and cancel the other, called in numerous times and all I'm getting is a please hold, and there were mutiple times I was hung up on hold -.-, god their support is so dam bad.
One of the operators even said he would put direct me to the right department and then never even dialed anything. -
howard911s Notebook Deity NBR Reviewer
u were not hung up if u don't hear anything (silence) for 5 mins, you are still on the line, just keep holding you will get to someone. Their call holding system sucks but if u don't hear anything and ur not disconnected, just keep holding. -
just wanted to let you guys know that I received my Crucial 256gb SSD and im made a unboxing and installation video. im currently publishing it to youtube. when its finishes feel free to check it out. thanks
-
I think the newer Samsung SSD's being shipped are the PB22-J which will eventually have TRIM support. I'm not worried. -
Just a quick question,
is it just me or are the speakers on the laptop pretty weak? really tinny sounding and hollow? -
well, the financing wasnt going anywhere so I just canceled it and re-ordered.. payed it outright in cash... also ordered a 256GB Crucial SSD Indilinx (with TRIM) which cost almost half of the laptop itself.. lol

Wow , sorry to hear, that's wrong! -
Are all laptops prone to suffering from dry solder/air gaps in soldering on the GPU's? I had one of my graphics card fail like that - so I was wondering, are specific cards/models less prone to this? Are there any which aren't soldered on into laptops?
I know that cooling is always the best way to handle things, but just wondering anyway (some cards seem to have very high failure rate). It is probably a noob question, but I am not too clued up on hardware. -
Just got an hold of a rep, told me my order would be shipped in 3-4 days, they told me that once i get the product they well give me a pricematch of the price i was overcharged with.
