OMG I just received it. IT IS AMAZING. Nothing like the old m15x. My girlfriend couldn't stop admiring it ;-). Screen is surely a treat. And I also got display port to hdmi adapter with it. Brilliant design dellienware. I just checked my screen to see if there is any dust.... and NO. surely the mousepad is a let down but then I rarely use it.

GZ m8! My was supposed to arrive today but it has been pushed to thursday 12/3

Hi All,
Been playing Dragon Age on my m15x the last week or so but for some strange reason when i booted it up today, i noticed the graphics were extremely choppy and that the fan in the back of the system did not kick in when I usually play it. What did I screw up? I don't think i touched any settings recently.
BTW - I think I do recall seeing some posts on this, but couldn't find the related them on the search so apologies if the solution is being repeated.
Any help on this would be appreciated...I just wanna play my game!

WEI doesn't really mean much. On my desktop computer desktop GTX 260 WEI was 6.4 under windows 7 (out of 7.9) and my ATI 5870 which destroys GTX 260 beyond imagination only scores a 6.0 out of 7.9 under WEI but runs totally fine and higher detail and faster frame rate than GTX 260, so dun freak out, run 3D mark or future mark, don't rely on WEI.
PS: Your OS is Windows Vista, everything 5.8 out of 6 is more than good enough, don't worry about it. -
Check this out, beside the front left grill you can see they left some kind of sticker in there. It is only on the one side. There is also alot of flex on this side of the palm rest but not the other.

Huh?... windows vista? I thought all M15x's come in windows 7.
-
No, the ones that shipped before W7 came out were loaded with Vista with the free upgrade to W7 promo. If they haven't upgraded yet, then they would still be on Vista.
-
Well he did say he received his lappy last friday so I was assuming that it was a recent order; after they started installing windows 7 on the system, lol.
-
Oh, that's really weird then. Maybe he's using Windows Mojave.
-
LOL... feels like heaven compared to the old one... ;-) ...

Hi, its been a while since I made a post but now that I have recived my alienware I feel I need to. When I first got my laptop after a lengthy and tiresome order which was remade many times, I finally recived it and I have had a few problems, including showing a black screen on startup and also mousle lag and keyboard lag. It took around 2-3 weeks for my windows 7 to arrive which once installed has fixed most problems, no mousepad lag on power but there is on battery and also I think my graphics card drivers were wiped in the reinstallation so I cannot play anything using DirectX, which is most games, I will redownload the drivers for the 240 (I do regret and plan to upgrade) but also the graphics on the WEI says 1.0 for some reason. Any help on the DirectX problem I would be glad for some help. Also does anyone know where I can buy a 260M in the UK and maybe an installation guide. Thanks
-
Seems they gave you a bad build. I can't even see through the plastic part like yours shows. No flex either. When is your system going to be exchanged? -
Just released a video of my m15x playing left for dead...
ill put up the specs and a vid of the whole lappy at some later stage.
(at school at the moment, no time)

Yeah a few little problems. If you shine a light on the shiny black plastic you will notice it is see through. I would assume the bit of flex is a loose screw. I am waiting on the rep to call me back, fed me some BS about needing to get permission from finance to hook me up with a $200 credit and a new machine. If he doesn't get back to me today I will resolve it with customer service.

Hi guys!
I got an Alienware one month ago and I'm reading nearly everday this thread.
I got a lot of useful informations! Thank you all!
I'm writting because since I install Win 7 I got a problem.
When I want to shut down my computer it doesn't shut down but restart. It's so annoy...
Sometimes it shut down correctly but not often
One time I tried to go in the taskbar properties. I changed the power button action to something else, apply and change it again to shut down. I tried and it worked. But the day after it did the same f****** restart!
Anyone had the same problem ?
I had to install win 7 because it came with Vista.
I had the old Bios and changed it when I had Vista
btw I didn't update win7 so maybe that's why I'm having this trouble.
I'm updating now so I will let you know if it will fix it.
It can aslo be a problem with my english skill. I'm fench speaker but my OS is in english XD -
your WEI is 1 because it you just installed windows. you need to click the update your score/ refresh button in WEI... but make sure you do this after you install all the drivers! yes your vide drivers are erased and there might be a few others as well that need to be installed. just go over to support.dell.com to download the drivers for your system, and you install the needed ones, go into WEI and update your score, then you will get normal numbers not 1

So does any one have GTX 280m installed on their m15x yet?
-
CitizenPanda Notebook Deity NBR Reviewer
Who would buy a $500 GTX 280m for a miniscule upgrade? -
that is very weird,, check the button/power setting to make sure everything is ok..... Also do the update and then, go to all over settings such as, high power, balanced, power saving, and etc... reset them all to default, and then
try to shut down. -
it was done and it worked fine...
-
I have a test for all m15x owners: run intel burn test with 32 threads at max setting. At the same time run furmark at native resolution with settings at 8xAA, stability test and extreme burn. While running those tests simultaneously, have gpu-z open. Run the test at default gpu clocks and then with it overclocked to 620/950/1550. Tell me if you notice the furmark graph take on an oscillating pattern with fluctuating gpu clocks.
Edit: please list your driver version as well. -
I will because I didn't opt for the GTX 260M. Though by the time I get around to it the new ATI's might be out so I might just opt for one of those. I don't think anyone has tried an ATI card yet in the M15x but I'll give it a shot.
-
ooo wow thats a lot lol, I didnt think it would cost that much... well still you never know if one has money to spend as he/she wishes then they might buy it.
-
The Canadian side is getting better, it seems the M15x comes with 4GB @ 1066 in the base model. Still my preferred build is costing me $3,179 with:
i7 820, 500 GB, 900p screen, GTX 260, 9 cell, 4 GB @ 1333, and 3 years complete care.
Still too much for me, but I'll be going on my internship starting January, and I know my company has a Dell account, so maybe I can get a bit of discount there. Do you guys think I should buy in early/late January or should I just wait for the next refresh? I dont mind waiting, but if the Mobility 5000 series wont be coming out until summer next year, then I dont know if it would be worth such a long wait. -
just throwing this out there, the base model is $1699 -- why not pick the price point you want and rather than maxing everything, pick which features are must have upgrades and which ones you could upgrade later? i.e. which are low cost upgrades and which ones are significant in terms of performance and which ones are just nice to have but not really essential?
-
I completely see your point. The biggest ticket items that I am willing to debate are the processor ($400 upgrade), RAM ($100 upgrade), and 3 years warranty ($530 upgrade).
I'm really hesitant about cutting out the warranty since I dont want to deal with any screw ups as I likely wont be replacing the laptop. Also, the problem is if I choose to upgrade the processor myself later on, then I will void the warranty right? And I dont want to do that. $100 for the 1333 RAM is not such a big deal, I can probably cut that, as the performance gain wont be noticeable. My dilemma is if I get the warranty and leave the processor, then I can't upgrade the processor later on since I'll void it. And if I get the processor and cut the warranty then I risk anything happening after a year of the standard warranty. -
I can get you the same system minus the complete care for $2400 US. -
CitizenPanda Notebook Deity NBR Reviewer
The performance difference between the i7 processors is undetectable for most users (and definitely not games - the GTX 260M is far too slow for CPUs to matter much).
Plan to upgrade to a 2.6ghz i7 in a year for $200.
Not that it would be impressive much... anybody with a i7 920 are running Quad core @ 4.2ghz + on their desktops.
Yes, Desktop i7s are more than twice as fast. -
LOL i'm configuring that same build without complete care for $2174 US on dell.com What's going on here Joker?
I see your point, when the time comes, I'll likely cut the processor, since $400 CDN upgrade is too much to get the benefit from it. The Dell.ca deal right now gives 6GB @ 1066 for the same price as the 4GB @ 1333, so it will take care of that.
Now I wait till Jan, so I can reap my company's discount... -
I went with the standard warranty. I got the rep to knock 10% off the bat then when it arrived I said I was sending it back and am getting another $200 to keep it. So after all is said and done, I am paying about $1850 CAD.
-
Ya its the warranty that adds about $500 to the build. I'm really hesitant about avoiding the warranty, since my current Toshiba has had random problems immediately after the 1 year mark. I might keep the basic processor and downgrade to 2 years complete care when I choose to purchase it. That will keep me within the low to mid 2000s before any discounts.
-
Total $2,326.18
Shipping to Canada is about $100 so actually I quoted too low of a price.
-
I think $400 to upgrade to the 820 is way too much. Mine is lightning fast as is. I would much rather put that cash towards an SSD in a few months when the prices drop a bit
-
Damnit Joker I should've gotten you to hook me up! Too late now, I'm hoping my laptop shows up Friday even tho the EDD is Monday.

Square Trade's 3 year warranty is also much cheaper.
They do not replace your computer if it can't be fixed, they pay out cash. Within 5 days.
For a $1650 laptop, Square Trade only costs $160 for 3 years. If you want accidental coverage, it is a little more. -
I only got the basic warranty, I'll have to look into that Panda! Is it only for Americans though?
-
haha thanks for the offer, but I'm not picking up the laptop just yet, waiting until I start work and have the cash!
-
CitizenPanda Notebook Deity NBR Reviewer
It says it is valid for CA residents who purchased a Square Trade warranty on Ebay (an Ebay item that contracts Square Trade as the warranty provider), so I don't think so. You should contact Square Trade and ask them. -
Thanks I will look into it once finals are over!
-
Hmm...how often do laptop's tend to break down? I only have a 1 year warranty on my order and I tend to keep my m15x for at least 3 years before I go and order another laptop but I will upgrade some parts from time to time aswell.
BTW great news everyone dell knocked off $100 off the m15x now, price is 1,399 without any discounts. -
Anyone know where I can purchase a extra 9 cell battery/32-60 GB SSD drive both under $99 with shipping?
-
Guys, if you read my previous post, please run the benchmark how I noted. I think there may be an overclocking limitation (be it power or bios limited) that causes throttling. I'm trying to figure out if it's limited to the drivers I'm using (195 betas) or it's a Dell limitation. This could be important in determining if future GPU upgrades will work or not.

Are you getting throttling at stock clocks? Why are you running 32 threads? i7 effectively runs only 8.
