I do not believe so, I was shopping for accessories and had the same question, and found this: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19298546.aspx as a reference. I kind of feel like underestimate people who buy Alienware computers.

 

Hmm just ran my first WEI and everything is fine except my Hard Drive score was 5.5. Roxy's was 5.9 so is there something I'm missing? We have the same HDs I believe.

 

Use Microsoft's security essentials: http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ It has a smaller memory footprint compared to AVG and does a better job.

 

Agreed, I went from AVG to MS security essential. I used it to clean out virus and maleware at work computer where latest Mcafee failed. MS auto delete it instead of quaratine it like AVG.

I agree with this, actually. Outside of running specific applications to induce a potential power problem (which is more and more looking like it is valid), my system is rock solid and runs like a champ.

My dad always said if you look hard enough for a problem or drama, you will oft not be disappointed.

Drama doesn't find you; you find drama.

Then we're all different. You have some users who look at laptops for what they are. A tool and a means to an end. Their systems are beat up, dirty and treated like a tool. Then you have the other extreme that go anal nerdrage if their system has one fingerprint on it or one blemish/scratch.

The problem hasn't affected my day to day usage, but with that being said (Nod to Curb Your Enthusiasm ), I do like to know what issues my systems have or may have and if viable, address them as soon as possible. Joker's findings definitely do deserve due diligence.

THANKS! you are a life saver! it says mine is in boxing stage as well..and according to you its in Malaysia? thought they were all made in China hm..and said based on current blah blah...mine will ship on Dec 14... but I think its just because o computer genrated date...I'm sure I'll get it before that. When reinstalling Windows 7 whats the best best order to reinstall everything. this is what Dell says

Heads up for those waiting... Ordered Nov. 28th, shows shipped today.
Upgrades - 260m and 1080p

Question - Are the ram timings user selectable or does the system run only on SPD? There is a 4gb Kingston HyperX set (KHX1600C7S3K2/4GX) 1600mhz C7 timings, but the SPD is programed at 1333 9-9-9 according to the data sheet provided on Kingston's website. Will the motherboard run only at SPD settings or can I manually set?

Yeah, was in production all day and updated this evening. Arrival date changed from the 17th to the 11th. Now to sell my XPS Studio 13!

 

Well my M15x is back in it's box ready to be picked up for a refund. I ordered on the 13th of Nov and it arrived the 30th. The few issues I had with it were a clicking HD, dust under glass, a random sticker stuck inside on the grill and still no Bluetooth module.
My rep, a seemingly friendly Indian, would not leave me alone during the purchasing negotiations, he called me repeatedly until I ordered it.
Once it arrived and I discovered the problems he disappeared. I called him multiple times explaining I have a very expensive paper weight and this needed to be resolved. It was unbelievable how good he was at avoiding me and lying about getting back to me. He would send emails saying he was going to call and just never would, every time I called him I would get voice mail. Finally, my call went through and I caught him off guard. He had told me he was going to get me a great deal because of all the troubles.
He basically wanted me to reordered the system with virtually no savings and wait another two or three weeks. Now that the negotiations are back on, I can't get rid of him, he has my home and cell numbers and is on the verge of harrasing me. I overheard my upset gf last telling him that it was 11:30pm and that she had an exam today. Kind of funny though, he keeps lowering his price each call so I humor him.
Due to the terrible customer service he provided when I needed to return the product I may just call and give another rep the commission. Am I being too hard on the guy?

 

AAAHHH!!!! Crud! Does anyone know how long it takes Dell to issue a refund? I have to cancel my M15x order now. I originally got the bare system with 3gig 1066 ram, GT 240M, and a 1080p screen for $1486.50 with tax and now AAFES is offering the i7 720 again finally! So now I can have 4 gigs 1333 ram, GTX 260M, and 1080p screen for $1359.50 tax free! I have to call tomorrow morning to cancel my order and hope for a fast refund.

that's it? you didn't get next day onsite repair, one visit from a tech and fix the three things? tech support for AW is usually very good and quite different from the sales: nothing you describe is hard to resolve: swap the HDD, remove the label and clean the inside of the screen. One hour tops. Beats the heck out of the hassle you've gone through and you'd have the M15 in perfect shape.

 

Omg why do you need to go all through the hassle of returning just for those probs?...

Call tech support and ask them to send you a replacement hd and a new bluetooth card. They're so easy to install. Also, If a dust bothers you that much, ask for a technician to come over or something.

 

Man...I ordered midnight 26th/27th..and its just in boxing stage now.. I wonder if the 1600 x 900 LED is causing it longer ETA than the full 1080P one..that said at least its in boxing stage, Can't wait.

If you guys check out alienware page, for 1599, they include 6 GB ram and GTX 260 now....but the bing cashback is only 5%

 

Yesterday I made an order for M15x - but today discount - $ 274! Is it possible then to cancel the order and order it today??

 

It's possible, but you just have to keep pestering them because most of the reps will say ' you cannot cancel the order ' blah blah blah.

I ordered a M15X (in switzerland) on 25/11/09 and am waiting for it!!!

Here's my specs:

Intel i7-920XM(2.00GHz,8MB) Mobile CPU
15.6in Wide Full HD (1920 x 1080) WLED
3072MB (1x1024 + 1x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
250GB Serial ATA (7200 1/min)
DVD+/-RW (DVD, CD lesen und schreiben)

1 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX260M
English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)

As you can see its almost maxed out apart from HDD/RAM/DVD drive. I will most likely upgrade the HDD once the SSD get cheaper. The same goes with ram. As to the optical drive, I had a Blu Ray write on my old m15x and I have absolutely never used it for either reading nor wiriting blu rays. For watching blu-ray I use the ps3 anyways since thats already connected.

Once I get the notebook Ill do some pictures next to the old m15x to show the size comparison if anyone is interested.

Btw, anyone know if the building->shipping takes as long as in US or is it a lot longer for switzerland. My EDD is 10th of January

 

With the lifting of the order too many problems. It's not worth it (an extra 2Gb of RAM - is now in order 4Gb, and 250GB - order now 250GB) - the difference in performance I think will be absent, for the same money.

hey guys does your webcam status light(the white light next to webcam) blink randomly... like every time i log in it blinks after 3mins or so and then randomly once in an hour or so... i have norton 360 v3 installed and did a complete search and nothing was found... is it just mine?

 

I think your shipping will probably take the allotted time. What happens is the more customizations you have then you can run into supply and demand issues. Especially on the screen and Blu Ray. So with the screen if they are out of stock you will have to wait for a shipment to arrive. Same goes for all the other components. Considering you are also out in Switzerland it may tack on some time.

However! I ordered my laptop with a few customizations and they had it to me quick. Order date Nov. 21st. EDD dec. 15th. Arrived Dec. 1st.

May come sooner! I hope yours does!

 

man i wish my M15x lappy get here that fast too, everyday im waiting is becoming very draggy.....and i keep hitting f5 on the dell tracking site and my email waiting for a shipping notice

 

I think Ill just keep calling them everyday to annoy them so that they will ship it out faster!

This is really poor for a premium laptop like Alienware. I thought it was a standard feature for current generation of laptops because my 2 year old Acer has a SPDIF support for the audio jack. Hopefully they provide it in the revision for this model if they plan to come out with one.

I cancelled my order at 8am as soon as CS was open, they gave me no problem with cancelling though I did have to get on a conference call with my bank and Dell so that the pending funds could be released back into my account sooner.
I cancelled because 2 days after ordering I noticed that the AAFES website was once again offering the i7 720 on the M15x build. So basically these specs changed in my build:
3g ram @ 1066 --> 4g ram @ 1333
GT 240M --> GTX 260M
not only did I get these upgrades but at total cost I paid $150 less than ordering directly through Dell/epp

 

I'm surprised they didn't give u any hassel, did yours go into production stage? cause usually if its inproduction stage they are stern about NOT canceling the order.

 

Yep, it was in production for like 2 days.

 

Is is weeeiiiirrrrd. Just checked the order status of the M15x I just placed 4 hours ago on AAFES to see if I could track it through Dell and it reads:
Status
Order recieved by supplier. Shipping in process.

 

Mine did the same when ordered from AAFES. Took about 8 days from order to reception and the status on the AAFES site never changed...until about 3 days after I received it.

 

Hi,

I need help. I've had my M15x for 2 weeks now and I just noticed my webcam stopped working. I disabled and enabled it and its fine. I uninstalled and installed it and it is being detected by the laptop. I can also turn it on and off using fn + webcam key. I noticed that the led lights are not on and I only see bars with different colors when using yahoo, no image at all.

Any help is appreciated.

Wow I left this thread when it got switched from the old thread and its gotten huge! Well after 2 months with my M15x I am happy with the system but it has a few problems.

My HDD more or less crashed yesterday it was impossible to boot windows even in safe mode it would just freeze after the login screen. I finally just booted from the 7 disc and upgraded to windows 7, what an improvement 7 is over vista. The way it crashed and wouldnt boot seriously bothered me, I imagine it was somethin with vista, I use AVG but I guess something nasty got through.

The main problems I am having with the system itself reside with the sound and the palmrest. The palmrest on my system is bubbling up on the right hand side below the arrow keys. Where the palmrest meets the plastic around the keyboard, the line is not flush and sticks up noticably near the arrow keys, you can wiggle it up and down with one finger, my dad saw it the other day and insists I should send it back now due to what I paid for it, Im worried about doing an exchange around the holidays because of how long its going to take. I need the laptop for a trip im taking and cant risk being left with nothing.

Do we have an official benchmark thread yet?

 

What problem are you having with the sound?

 

I just installed 7 so Ill have to confirm if I still have the issue but with vista I had poor sound quality, the audio would sound scratchy with the proloaded drivers, It would also pop and hiss randomly even when the computer was not playing back audio. This was most noticable with headphones. I could not turn up the volume more then 50% without horrible scratchy sounding audio playback. Using the windows drivers helped alot but the audio quality was never great especially at high volumes with the speakers, streaming audio especially sounds bad.

I also have somewhat frequent problems with bad latency which a restart normally fixed, It seemed some of the alienware software either fx or the facial recognition was causing the problem with bad lat. Again I havent tested anything with 7 yet but it runs smoother overall.

Wow I remember when this thread started people were griping about the 2hr:45min battery life of the M15x with 9 cell. Look at the new Sager review, 57 mins! I was able to get 3 hrs max with different power settings on word processing. I recently took a trip to baltimore 3 hours from my home and watched south park episodes for about 2 hrs of the trip with the screen brightness nice and high with "moderate" power saving settings. BTW this is not a Sager flaming post just a bonus for M15x users who kept there units when alot of people sent them back because it didnt have a 280m and the battery life. For a gaming laptop the M15x has great battery life.
