Actually I'm pretty sure its going to just be called Alien. It changes too fast to adapt and it has a deadly integrated GPU.

Get it? Get it? :p :p

Grrr, I was 110% ready to pull the trigger until I saw the list of reduced features on the M15X. I have some concerns about it now that maybe some of you could help answer - I've read this and the other 2 threads a dozens times but some things are still eluding me!

The LCD - I've seen ASUS advertise a 15.6-inch FHD (1920x1200) LED-backlit display (G51J), and a 16" LED HD (1366x768) Color-Shine (Glare-type)(M60J). What is the difference between LED-backlit and LED HD, and which type does the M15X sport?

What kind of battery life can be expected if a user enables Stealth mode and makes every effort to downclock the GPU and other components? It is mindblowing they didn't include a co-GPU like the older M15X. Sure, I can wait for Allendale but then I lose 2 cores which is no good either...

Does Displayport transmit Audio through an HDMI adapter?

If I wanted to preview an M15X, what would be the best way to do it? Do they have any brick and mortar sales places (I recall they were doing best buy for their desktops for a short bit...).

Thanks for the help guys. I may have to wait this round out, and maybe even the next round out, if I can't find a laptop as versatile as the original M15X, but without the paper mache hinges.

There are 2 kinds of LED - regular white LED and RGBLED. The M15x and about 99.5% of all LED laptops support the white LED.

Battery life with 9 cell probably 3hrs.

Not sure about audio thru dispplayport.

No way to get a look. Microcenter may carry it eventually, but not yet.

Juason so far no one knows about the audio through the display port. The general consensus is that display ports can transmit audio but this hasn't been seen in a laptop yet so we dont really know... My thoughts are if AW put a port in there that is barely used at this point I would hope sound would be integrated.

Ok a quick update on Display Port. I just read in three places that Display Port DOES transmit audio. The only question lingering is do the hdmi adapters support audio as well. Im going out on a limb to say they do. Why not? If dsplyport transmits sound and HDMI transmits sound it seems pretty logical. Also when they first put the manual up and everyone was flaming the display port I heard a few people say the adapter costs over a hundred bucks. Do a quick search on amazon you'll find plenty of nice adapters for less then $20.

EDIT : Ok I see now what the RGB LED screens buy you. I wonder if they have plans to bring that tech to the alienware line anytime soon...

Thank you for the answers to my other questions.

ah well, i can't afford either of them anyway. I think its best to wait till the price drops.

DisplayPort can transmit audio by specification if the vendor cares to implement it. So the interesting thing here is; did you read in three places that Alienware has implemented audio on its DisplayPort for the M15x? If not, we are back to 0 again.

I am anxious to find out what overclocking features the X series have and what kind of clocks they will be capable of. If you could hit say 2.6ghz on all four cores that would be pretty amazing .I dont think we will see 3.0ghz or anything that extreme..

Also how will the power supply of the M15x handle all the extra load since it seems pretty average.

    Guys,

Does anybody know why AW Europe is NOT (at least UK and Ireland, those days) offering a free Win7 upgrade with M15x (however it is offering with M17x).

I have mine ordered two weeks ago, and now I found that  I was sure I have Win7...

Any thoughts ? (is this proof of "overpricing" in EU ?)

    cheers

    K.

Well, just placed my order. Was a pain to keep it under 2k and still get most of what I wanted on it.

CPU - 1.6 Wanted the 1.73, but it's just out of my price range. Frankly, I think it'll be more than enough given what I'm upgrading from. (AMD 64 single core 2.4)
    RAM - 4GB / 1333
Display - 1600x900 (1900x1200 is just to small for me)
OS - Windows Home Premium, though I'm putting 7 pro on it as soon as I get it.
    HDD - 250GB

Really looking forward to this. Just hope it gets here before the compaq craps out on me. /crossfingers

$1859.07 after 7% epp discount....which covered tax, bringing the total back to 1995.72

I did get the 260m. Knew for I forgot something.

I figure if I truly need the 1.73, I'll look into upgrading later. For myself for the time being, It should be more than enough laptop. The main reason I didn't go for the middle processor is that $350 puts me to high up to get anything else (820 + 260m = $2099). my DPA account only has a 2k limit, and I need the 12 months SaC.

Is there a specific reason you went with such expensive ram? I always just get standard then upgrade later from newegg

I considered that, and normally I would. In the end, that was to save myself the hassle and possible risk of compatibility issues. I love newegg, and buy most stuff from them (I'll probably be buying parts for a new desktop through them soonish). After tax and shipping on newegg, the $50 difference didn't hurt to much, and there wasn't anything else that was...a must have. Really, the RAM was the last decision I made on this.

But you could sell the RAM in the M15x and use that towards an upgrade.

    I went with 3GB because the $50 to from 3GB --> 4GB is a joke. I can get 4GB cheaper than that and sell the 3GB ;)

This is true. Didn't think about that. ah well, like I said, it's not to big of a deal in my book. Really, I needed the laptop asap, and Did a lot of playing around with the different builds until I got one I was pretty happy with. Now the only hope is that my current laptop still remembers it needs to cool itself until I get the new one. >_<

congrats I went with the lower end cpu too, $350 for a few hundred mhz and 2mb of cache was too hard to swallow when you can buy the high end oem i7 for around $500. I bet in a year that $350 will cover most of the cost of a new cpu.

    Heres a 720qm

    http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-INTEL-CPU-MOBILE-CORE-I7-720QM-1-6GHZ-1333MHZ-QUAD_W0QQitemZ220485463706QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCPUs?hash=item3355f52e9a&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

    Search "Mobile i7"

Hes asking $400 for that one, the other day I saw at least one 920 and it was reasonably priced. Maybe not $500 exactly but it was cheap enough for a cpu that just launched a few months ago. Someone out there must be buying them unless that auction expired. Im thinking in a year getting ahold of a high end clarksfield should be easy enough. Maybe clarksfield will even get a refresh with lower power draw... Prob dreaming on that one, even so supposedly the arrandales will be compatable with the PM55 chipset minus the integrated GPU feature. I still think the clarksfield will dominate the first gen arrandales but who knows at this point.

Yeah, uh, $400 for the 720. I doubt we'll see the 920 for less than $800 for a while.

Honestly, for those complaining about the $350 for the 820 from Dell, it isn't a bad price. Go look at other systems from Dell and look at the upgrade prices.

FYI for anyone who ordered the M15x. The resolutions department/customer service called me today ( I have had issues due to my last order )to inform me that due to the M15x being a new system, manufacturing cannot expedite the order right now since they are thoroughly testing the new units. She did tell me to expect my order on or around 10/22... I find that interesting due to Win 7 launch. Just wanted to pass along the info. :D

I have a couple of questions with regards to the 1600x900 vs. the 1920x1080p LED panels.
So here it goes obviously the smaller resolution would be less taxing on the GTX260M and on the pocket but the question I have goes as follows.

Most games support 1920x1080 do most games support the 1600x900 resolution?
The reason I ask is that I will not play a game if it is not supported at the native rez. It looks too distorted.

    Thx in advance.

They are both 16:9 ratio, most games I know/play support 16:10 ratio not too many of them support 16:9 for some odd reason. Can anyone confirm pls?

Most modern games support 16:9 as well. You can also edit the registry to force a resolution (I had to do this for WarCraft III)

Nice bubbamel. Would be sweet if they went ahead and put our upgrade disc in the box, or better yet send them out preloaded. I was wondering about some resolutions too. If theres a game I dont want to run at full resolution wont there still be a few other resolutions that are the same ratio and wont distort the image? I understand your losing picture quality, and on some resolutions the image may be stretched in wierd ways but theres gotta be some resolutions that will still give you an undistorted image. Does this make sense?

Im about to ordder and I have a question for about the all new m15x (with i7). Is there anything to look out for? like with the older version area 51, broken hinges, etc? I was aware that on m17x you can change a video card something like mxm( im new to this), can you also change the one on m15x when it gets outdated? Because I think that will be pretty soon. And if I order the ddr3 1066mhz will i still be able to buy 1333mzh ddr3 and upgrade it or its gona have different sockets??? Im trying to get a good setup on i7 and go for 260 gtx, and upgrade everything else like ram and ssd from other places to save money.
    Thanx

If the build quality is the same as the M17x there will be no issues.

The GPU is swappable having a MXM slot. What you can upgrade to will be dependent on what Dell releases for an upgrade.

The 1066 and 1333 memory uses the same slots. You can change it how ever you want.

The 256GB Samsung SSD for a $400 upgrade is a great deal from Dell. I don't think you'll find a better SSD aftermarket for the price and performance. Highly recommended. Good luck!

They will only repair your current chassis. Your "stuff" will not fit in the new M15x.

If you want the new system you will have to buy it outright.
