Thanx a lot! What about if I wanted to buy a video card from another manufacturer or like nvidia or ati themselfs or ebay's site etc, or that wouldnt work?
Before I was thinking on buying the new envy 15 it also has i7 but better graphics ati 4830 1gb ddr3, and supports upto 16gb ddr3, huge standard resolution and audio by dr.dre's beats co, night vision camera to record in pitch black my paris hilton, but no optical drive. it weighs only 5.4 and extended battery which slaps right on the bottom panel looks like the part of the laptop and in total all together gives u 18hours of battery on same i7 processor lol, no thats not a typo 18 hours!!! and battery is still very slim
I know this isnt what laptop should i buy thread. these are two biggest competitions now because i7 and hp envy is very slim, yet m15x with all the pretty lights, blah blah blah.
Its such a hard decision my hair is turning grey and im 21lol.
Which should I buy?
-
Nvidia and ATi use resellers to distribute their products. If you contact them they'll tell you to contact your OEM. You'll be able to buy upgrades through eBay assuming the GPU works with the M15x. The best place will continue to be through Dell. If you by it from them they will warranty it with the system.
The envy is a nice system. The 4830 is also a nice GPU but for gaming you should get more out of the 260M. Plus there is a lot better chance to upgrade the GPU in the M15x than the envy. If portability and battery life are more important to you then the envy might be a better choice. The 4830 will still play games. I only worry about heat with the thinner systems. -
Thanx on the heads up for m15x. I curious why do you say that 260m gtx is better at gaming? the benchmarks are higher in 3dmark05 and 3dmark06.
gtx 260m has average of 9,500+ points the 4830 has 11,700+ average and thats for the 512mb card i couldnt find 1gb benchmarks so it should be even more. on 3dmark05 it just rappes it. One thing that got me pushing toward m15x is it has the optical drive! -
The 4830 isn't going to come close the 260.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
but for vantage the GTX 260m will crush the 4830, and this is MUCH more telling of game performance in modern games (not games from say, 06 or 05
)
-
As Scook said you need to see the Vantage GPU score results for a more accurate comparison. -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
The 4850 1GB mobility is about the same level as the GTX260 (a little better overall), generally being either identical or upto 10% faster game dependant. Given this I'd imagine the 4830 to be somewhere around 25% slower than the GTX260.

I do love my vantage
-
If the 4830 was on the same playing field with the 260s and they stayed cool the envy 15 would be a very popular system. I just HATE the macbook look.
-
But I thought 4830 was a bigger number than 260?
-
I just read the flyer posted on engadget and the RAM it is using is DDR3. Not even GDDR3 would get it near 260 levels.
If it uses plain-jane DDR3, it will be very slow. -
If it was a 4860, sure why not. But the chassis is nowhere near robust enough to cool that kind of GPU effectively. The 4830 is 128 bit and only uses GDDR3. It has a lot of shaders and possibly a decent clockspeed, but it's starved of memory bandwith. I wouldn't expect more than a 25% boost over a 4670, which is at the higher end of middle tiered GPU's. The 260M is at the high end of high-tiered GPU's.
-
-
well nvidia has more letters then ati so nvidia wins.
-
that 260 gtx is faster and 4830 has slow bits.
Thanx, so its all good because m15x has optical envy lost there, 260 gtx wins,
should i go for lower resolution or 1080p? because ive read in this forum that 260 is still not the best out thre and hd resolution might stress the card more while playing games giving it lesser fps, is 900p good? because i know the aspect ratio is 16;9 and the smallest resolution for that is 700(something)p.... so im guessing 900p isnt bad at all right?
Thanx again -

thanx again -
What's the order status of the M15x? Are you guys in pre-production like the M17x ATI orders?
-
No, mine is in build.
My Adamo order, however, is stuck in pre-production. -
I head someone a few pages back say the EU systems didn't come with a win 7 upgrade. Allthough it doesn;t mention that on the site I ahve confirmed with my rep that I will be getting an upgrade coupon for it. Just though I would let anyone else who was wondering know.
Im in pre-pro but my estimated delivery is 12th November
Anyone else in the UK ordered this thing? When is your esp delivery date? -
in build too
-
In production.. -
In an effort to keep the Owner's Lounge clear of order status updates, would one of you kind gentlemen (one from Europe, one from US perhaps) care to generate the *OFFICIAL* M15x Europe Order Status Thread, and *OFFICIAL M15x US Order Status Thread, or am I just way off base here.....

BOXING STAGE HERE!!!
w00t
Can't wait, guess I am looking at a Monday or Tuesday delivery! -
Anyone else this far yet? -
-
Bubba
I had my order expedited and it obviously went thru. Not sure why your rep told you different. -
You ordered on the 22nd Sleey?
-
I did too and guess what I am in boxing as of today as well!! Woohoo! I really thought they were holding back because of Windows 7... but you were right Sleey0.
-
K. -
Sweet!
Although I doubt we will get it before Monday -

Dam Sleey0, that is maybe as fast as my M17x was. 12 days from ordering to my doorstep haha. I think that is a record so far
-
That's what I'm looking at - 12 or 13 days total
-
Hope we are not the guinea pigs.

Sleey0 I'm jealous! I see the email they send you that allows you to view your order status doesn't have an option for "In Boxing" do I have to call to get that kind of info? Also can you ask a rep to expidite your order or do you have to do that when you place the order... This is why I originally tried to place my order on the phone but the dell rep I got had no clue about the M15x and tried to tell me it wasn't available for order until october. Looks like your gonna be the first here to get yours, if my oct 26th date is true that really sucks.
-
To get detailed info on the progress of your order (Kitting, Build, Testing, Boxing, etc). follow these steps:
BACKDOOR to the old order status!
1)Call 800-283-2210 = this is the DPA phone number so don't get worried
2)Follow prompt #3
3)Now, select business/epp selection #2
4)Track order option #1
5)Then do it again - track order option #1
Hope this helps you determine what status you are in. -
Wow you guys are sneaky! I expect a complete review first day of arrival.
-
Yeah mine is also in boxing. After that another computer told me that my estimated delivery date was 10/22. So the computer is boxed up but they arent shipping it out for another 2 weeks? If they wait that long to send it I hope its because my 7 disc is in there.
-
No, boxing includes the time they send it from Xiamen to the US (Reno for WC, and Nashville for EC).
Once it arrives in the US, it is boxed and then shipped. Approx 4 days total.
Shipping status will update when it physically ships via fedex. -
Wow.
NBR is messed up today? lol -
Hey do you have a display port adapter yet? Hopefully someone here has one and can see if it transmits audio. I wonder if theres a way to just call dell and actually get someone who knows the facts to say yes or no.
-
None of Alienware folks frequent here anymore do they? I am sure they could answer those questions. I wonder what happened to them?
-

Nice. I wish I had ordered with only 2gb to so I could just upgrade myself for cheaper... Hopefully AW gave you one 2gb dimm instead of 2 1gb sticks.
-
I went with the standard 3GB. $50 seemed steep to go from 3GB to 4GB (one of the modules will be 2GB anyways so all you need is another 2GB).
-
What is AAFES? I am assuming it is another thing that I cannot take advantage of
