Yep, I don't plan on gaming much. I always feel like I am wasting time when I'm playing video games.

I got it for the 8 Logical cores the i7-720QM has. I need to run about 3-4 Vm's at the same time so I need a lot of CPU cores to run them well enough to be useful. I also opted for the 240M to save money and then put that money into a new SSD. I think you made a good choice. The nVidia 240M is still a vary powerful graphics processor. It can play Crysis at most stuff High and still get 20FPS. Also, I read one report that the 240M in this M15x REALLY has 1GB of GRAM not just 512MB like Dell has on their website. Not confirmed yet though. I'll know when I get mine and make a nice clear post to confirm Y/N.

Ya, I took that post down because I thought it was a little to trollish. But I am glad you took it the right way. (light hearted and what ever MS dose suck)

Win98. I like wind98 too. There is no file permissions so it is crazy easy to build botnets with them ;) Though at that time I ... well no Linux was good by 1998... Right .. 6 years old. Maybe still lacking some needed applications.. I don't know. Solaris was good then but I don't think that it ran on x86 chips.

You know OS/2 Warp was the thing to run in 1998.

    -----------

    Well I just ordered a Intel X25x G2 80GB.
It is slower then the OCZ ones but it has just that little bit more space. It was a vary tough call though. Mainly because I know the OCZ ones are good but I don't know about the Intel ones.

Owe, The new G2 Intel X25m SSD's Do have TRIM. So, if anyone wanting to get the Intel SSD. Make sure you get the "Silver" one that has G2 in the ID. The (First Gen) X25m's are all "Black", don't get that one. They cost basically the same so there is no benefit at this point.

Funny though Hu, the one guy that was saying not to get the Intel.. Got the Intel.. Classic.

Um, G9? That was replaced by the G9x quite a few months ago. I got the G9x at BestBuy shortly after Christmas- it was on sale for $65. Not much difference though, the G9x is exactly the same as the G9, it just has a slightly more sensitive laser (I think 5400 dpi vs. 5000 dpi).

HDD temp still reads the same in HWMonitor. When I first boot up the computer after being off for several hours, the hard drives read right around room temperature after boot up, so it doesn't seem to be a sensor issue.

It does drop to the mid/upper-mid 40's while gaming, down from a high of 50~52C idle. Not sure I understand why the hard drive is running so hot, especially while idle... the fans at a higher RPM seem to be cooling the drive off a bit while gaming. I just don't feel comfortable with a hard drive so warm when I'm not really doing much of anything besides web browsing.

Oh, and thank you for the input and suggestions so far, InappropriateName_3. :)

They are sending me a brand new laptop....will be here in 7-10 days and I get to keep using this one until the new one arrives.

    Dell came through.

I will be making a video on this current issue I had, so others can test their new systems and ensure this doesn't happen.

Oh, and I get 2 hrs and 30 minutes of battery with my LCD brightness set to 3 bars, which is the lowest brightness I can tolerate.

Keep me posted but i think you should be fine, try to get others with same specs to confirm this.

yeah go to nvidia website, http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index5.aspx?lang=en-us
choose 200m series and your operating system and download.

sweet!!! good going, yeah try to see if people with the same specs have this issues or not. hopefully yours is just a one off.

Hmmmm, I checked SIW (System Information for Windows) and it says I have DDR3 1333MHz memory but it's running at 667. IDK, could it be because my system is idle?

EDIT: Scratch that, SIW gives the same numbers on my Desktop which has 1600MHz RAM.

so on my invoice, it says "4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz 2 x 2048MB"

And in bios it was 1333 "single"

    What exactly does this mean?

don't worry its duo channel but its a bug in the bios, keeps reporting single channel.

I'm running mine with an ancient 17' display and wondering about whether it's safe to keep the M15x closed during this i.e. does the keyboard add anything to the ventilation?

Still waiting for Dell ANZ (Aust/NZ) to sort themselves out and get me a DP->HDMI adaptor so I can get the AW2210. Apparently it'll take them 4-6 weeks... Unfortunately not much locally available, which is why going with Dell.

Anyone know of any reason the starting price just dropped £65 on the UK website? (its gone from 999 to 935) and I cant seem to find any hardware that's been removed?

Also how long till dell refreshed the gfx in these? I want to buy one but im not spending £ 1200 now when I could wait a month and get a more future proof product.

Finally do the alienware prices normally increase after they get a new gfx in them, and how much?

i don't know about uk price, but when price drop for US it was for a lower starting configuration. we don't have an exact date for new gpu yet, but i'm thinking around 3 months, but everything is just spectulations. with new gpu should cost around $200-$300 US more. Even after new gpu is release, we won't know if it going to have any issues or not. look at new M17x r2 just release and we are finding issues with the 920xm with 4870's. so you would have to wait for release and then wait to see if it has any issues. keep in mind that nothing is future proof.

    WOW !

My Order has Shipped :D new eta Monday 2/8/2010 4 days sooner then original eta
I have Next day delivery but it is Friday so I have to wait 3 days. Classic. Owe well, I just hope the thing is flawless, fingers crossed.. knock on wood.

Too bad I just ordered the SSD and didn't get fast delivery. The eta is still 2/12 on that. I wasn't expecting the M15x until 2/12. No problem really. Linux is so easy. I can just install Linux on the HDD then when I get the new SSD. Just make a tar ball, copy it over, and unpack it on the SSD. Takes all of 20mins.
    I love Linux. :D

I think you should call the phone # I posted ... boy like 20 pages back now... call that one or call the one a couple pages before that the student discount one. Both are the "Public Sector" sales department.

Call them and say your in school. Then just start telling the person all the specs you want. Maybe even over do it a little, that way you have some options your willing to downgrade. Then start to haggle and get the price down. They guy on the phone makes money fore every sale. It is in his best interest to make a deal for you. I bet you'll get at lest $200 off. There are also deals that they can only give over the phone and not on the web.

Never order on the Web. You'll get ripped off. Trust me I almost did that.

I'm one of the thanksgiving shoppers. Lucky to have my M15X. Took it to my internal medicine research class (mostly mac people) today. All the mac people were like wow! :D The look on their face was totally worth the 1.5K I spent on this rig

Anyway, anyone got their $50 dell rebate card yet? It's been over 8 weeks now. I was wondering if I'm the only one they forgot :(

Thanks InappropriateName_3 for the congrats & Thanks for posting that good phone # again. I'll try to give you a rep point again. The last time it didn't work I guess.

    ------
Hay hay, I guess I I'm getting the SSD in time. ETA 2/9 for the SSD. Good stuff I'll have one day with the HDD in it to test the laptop out for defects and stuff. That takes about a day anyway. Then I'll get the SSD the next day.

    ------
:D Ya, and your M15x was cheaper then there Core2 MacPro.

No, you didn't over pay. You got the big 500GB 7200rpm harddrive, 9cell battery, and 260M. You got a good box. Just forget about it. Nothing good is going to come form racking your brain about the price. You got all the goodies, 1080p, big battery, big harddrive, Quad Core i7, fast GPU with 1GB of dedicated RAM. It's all good.

    The 260M is $200 more then mine. The 9cell is another $100, The 500GB Harddrive is... what $100?. I paid $1663. + your upgrades...=$2063.

man my osd just failed on me. none of the buttons works. if you have this issue, you can solve it by powering off, unplug it take out the battery and push the power button for 20 sec. put everything back and it should work again. don't know if this is a A03 problem or not, but i'm seeing alot of people with the same issue. but thats the fix if you should have this problem.

I installed iTunes for the first time today and hooked up my iphone and to my surprise..................I didn't have one issue. It recognized the phone just fine after a brief driver installation. It also synced up just fine. Now I didn't do a full sync, I just added some apps manually. This is good news, but I'd trade iPhone issues over throttling any day of the week :)

I don't think anyone here knows. InappropriateName_3 speculates it will be a few months. But who knows. They just came out with M17x R2 so maybe it is just around the corner. However, even after it is out, you may want to wait a few weeks to see if it has any problems.

Following up on the HDD heat issue that concerned me earlier in case anyone runs into the same issue...

It somehow escaped me that Steam was downloading games and that likely had an effect on the HDD temps I was seeing (50-52C). I still noticed some high 40 marks while web surfing at times even when Steam wasn't downloading anything. I checked my processes/services and corresponding hard drive I/O reads and writes. It turned out Dell's DataSafe (or whatever it's called) was hitting the hard drive a lot. I uninstalled DataSafe, and since then my temps have hovered around the low 40Cs, so I am happy. I'm not entirely sure DataSafe was exactly the culprit, but I haven't had temp issues since. Thanks again, InappropriateName_3.

Side note :: it appears by the model name being reported in SIW and HWMonitor that the 320 GB HDD that was put in my M15x is a Western Digital Scorpio black hard drive...very nice.

Oh, and grats to all the others with new M15xs in their hands or on the way. :)

good to hear you found the culprit, i forgot about data safe because i removed it the first day, just a note if you uninstall it you can't respawn the system with your existing data. yeah the western digital is sweet, the seagate was having to many issues.

L4D2 yes I love that game, but TF2 is the game i play most. funny its the cheapest game i bought and it brings me the most fun even after 2 years.

Yea, i've had two instances, and i must say, if you are indeed in the right, paypal will take your side.

Just make sure you have everything documented, from e-mails, posting page information, recepit, delivery confirmations, order numbers, and basically anything you can use to prove your case.

I got my money back pretty quickly after i took the required steps to file a dispute.

As an experienced seller/buyer from ebay, just remeber this: when purchasing/selling online, make a seperate folder in your email named "ebay" and put all e-mails, info, tracking numbers etc.. in that folder, and DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING. untill you have received your item and are happy, that is. :)
