Glad to help. In some ways I actually prefered my 4850m Xfire equipped machine to this 280m SLI machine...about 5% lower FPS on average...but no audio/video stutter! haha

I'm having a hard time waiting for 2/8 to come already. Damn. I even got more excited reading the comments about how good the 4870's really are, because I walked into this machine thinking the 280's are better. Now that I know I'm wrong, I'm even more excited to get this damn machine!

    Work faster DELL!

Quick Question: I'm under the impression that core i7 processors no longer use a front side bus and therefore will utilize memory at any frequency (1066, 1333, 1600mhz). Is this true? Will an 820QM fully utilize my 4gb 1333 or will it only use 1066mhz of it?

This is something Dell should consider looking into for future designs of the M17x: http://blogs.zdnet.com/gadgetreviews/?p=742 A watercooled system with a desktop processor + overclocked/overvolted video cards would be awesome! The noise wouldn't be high and as long as the TDP was good for the waterblocks, the temps would be better than fan/copper cooled systems.

If you don't call in, complain that you need your system sooner, and get free next business day shipping, you fail.

According to intel's i7 mobile specs, the 720QM/820QM can use either 1066 or 1333, where the 6xx and below support 1066 (or 800) only. I would assume that it will actually run the memory at full speed. Doesn't' seem like shameless money-grab in this case :D

Hmm I just realized, my M15x had a resolution of 1600x900 and this new one is 1920x1200p. Now the M15x had a single 260M and the new one has dual 4870s but the performance difference between the two may not be very substantial. There's a 37.5% increase in pixel density and I'm assuming the performance demand will scale linearly with the increase in resolution. Hopefully the crossfire 4870s will have >50% increase in performance compared to the single 260M I had previously.

well a single 4870 is roughly 10-20% faster and then take into account the gaming features that are in the 4xxx series like the DX 10.1 which actually helps games run faster..... then go on and on about how ATI drivers are much mich better and the result is always yes to your question

    You should be fine

Now if you ever pull that stunt like you did in the ETA lounge again i will track down your IP and make your computers fail .... :)

    thank you, come again

I think I got a pretty good deal, I got a hold of Liza from Dell 1800-695-8133 ext. 723-4767. She said she can give any of my friends and family the same deal. Also, the shipping delivery date is suppose to be on the 4th of Feb, sounds crazy but we will see.

I just configured a M17x i7 through AAFES and the price was $3399. I did the Dell EPP and configured one the same and it was $3399 - $340(EPP Discount) = $3059........They need to fix the discount through AAFES. I saved a grip on my M15x through AAFES :)

Yeah, AAFES price comes out equal to the normal Dell Home pricing (basically, no discount at all except tax and shipping). You're still better off with the EPP 10% + $50 coupon code that pops up on the EPP page. I'm a little disappointed--AAFES usually does a pretty good job.

I finally gave up on AAFES showing the EPP discount they usually do. I talked to a Dell sales rep and got a quote with the usual EPP 10% off plus another $50. I then called back the next day, got a different sales rep, and got an additional $150 off the previous quote if I used my DPA. That made up for the tax I would have saved through AAFES so I ordered straight through Dell.

Give it a shot and call back to see if you can get more off. If you have a DPA then it is possible to save even more.

I think I'm finally going to go for one of these on Friday. I just have one thing bothering me. For gaming would you recommend the i7 620 or 720? And is it really not worth getting anything higher with the gpu's being the bottleneck?

I really wanted my R2 to have a Blu Ray player, it's very annoying that I couldn't order it with one, but I'm willing to give Dell the benefit of the doubt as I'm sure it's out of their hands at this point.

My question is, would you guys recommend buying an external BR player or waiting until the drive comes into Dell and just order one through them and self install it? Would there be any compatibility issues?

Which would you do? (Or are you doing if you're in the same position?)

    Haha, I have one bro.

I want my R2 to have BR capabilities because I'd use it a lot. I move around a lot between my apartment, my girlfriend's house, and my parents, so being able to watch a BR "on the move" is important to me.

Seems like buying an external drive would be the cheaper route.

Well since this is for work stuff I can not carry a ps3 and laptop both to work. I understand why everyone wants to be a smart a$$ .

Well the price went from $3,052 - epp $2,742 - 3% dell + tax = roughly $2,800 with free tv tuner and no blu-ray. Will call again maybe tomorrow and see if I can get it a little better.

The company ive ordered my m17x from are fitting in the blu-ray burner themselves. it's a genuine dell blu-ray burner and they're charging me $400 to fit it in. I choose it mainly because its a genuine Dell blu-ray burner so it wont void my warranty.

OK, I am sure if I looked here in this thread I would find it, BUT:

Even though I ordered the 1TB Raid0 option, I will be getting rid of the Raid0, and buying myself a SSD. So, if whats the best SSD (looking for a decent size also) on the market and does anyone have a link to tuning it with Win7.

Will probably just put my boot stuff on there and some other stuff I want real fast load. 200G or so would be nice.

If you worked for a major oil company then you would understand. By the way, why would I want a ps3 when the M17x should be able to do everything I want. This is used for work and during work, I have to live in the middle of the ocean for 14 days at a time, so Can not bring a lot of baggage since helicopters are limited on weight. Just clothing and laptop in my bags put my bags over weight and The helicopter pilot es all ready about it. I do not play a lot of games so i will not waste what 400 or 600 on a ps3. Dumb to get a ps3 when I do not play games that often.

Hi guys, I have been on the phone with dell rep to order my new beast. I got 10% discount and the system I orderd is:
Silver,i7 720qm cpu, dual ati cards, 1920x1200 screen ( no RGB stock in the UK ), 320GB in raid 0 and the rest is stock. The cost with student discount is £1933. The order is not comnfirmed yet ( the rep needs to ger approval from his boss for my student discount).
Do u guys think I should get the i7 820qm instead? and for the screen to get the lower res. since its not RGB LED?

I would wait until RGB LED is available in the UK again. It's not really worth getting the CCFL screen.
